While it may not seem like gaining extra weight in pregnancy is such a big deal, in fact, it really is.
A lesser known a€“ but highly concerning a€“ consequence of a womana€™s food choices and weight gain in pregnancy is that she can predispose her unborn child to an increased risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes later in life. So what can you do to make your uterus a healthy home environment for the next nine months as your baby prepares for his or her debut?
If you start off your pregnancy overweight, your recommended weight gain is going to be lower, so your extra calorie needs are likely to be lower as well. To make each extra calorie count, it can be helpful to choose high-protein foods that are also rich in other nutrients that are important for a healthy pregnancy. If this reality check feels like a buzzkill, therea€™s a silver lining: While pregnancy is not a time for reckless abandon with your diet, you get far more dietary latitude if you choose to breast-feed.

For many people, a quick glance through your kitchen cupboards will reveal a whole stack of packaged, unhealthy foods that may or may not be masquerading as healthy choices. Let’s take a look at a few reasons why even ‘healthy’ processed foods might not be a great choice for your healthy diet.
The old advice from the ‘80s (“Eat more carbs, less fat”) has now been proven incorrect and is slowly being phased out from institutional guidelines. Processed foods often contain multiple sources of sugar, hiding under names like high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, molasses, and many more.


You might pay for it later, but the initial hit of flavor can sometimes make it seem worthwhile.
Next time you sit down for a processed meal, remember that it likely contains excess amounts of things like sugar and trans fat, and reduced amounts of the other macronutrients and micronutrients you’re your body really needs. These types of carbs pass through the digestive system rapidly and when they do it can cause spikes in insulin levels and blood sugars. Many processed foods are high in flavor but low in the nutrients that your body really needs. A chronically low fiber diet can slow down your digestive system and open the door for opportunistic pathogens like Candida.

By staying on top of your nutrition-related goals and tracking your progress closely, there should be no surprises a€“ and thata€™s exactly what wea€™re looking for in a healthy pregnancy. Spikes and troughs in your blood sugar can lead to cravings, bad dietary choices, and an unhealthy relationship with food. Eating lots of fiber can also protect you from heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation. Consult your doctor or health professional before starting a treatment or making any changes to your diet. If this happens consistently, the fetal pancreas becomes overworked, making extra insulin to help absorb the extra sugar.
So instead of doubling down on cookies, youa€™ll really want to double up on portions of folic-rich fruits and veggies, such as avocado, citrus fruits, strawberries, asparagus and leafy greens. Your doctor will be monitoring the weight gain of both you and your baby, and that should provide the best feedback as to whether youa€™re eating too little, too much or just the right amount. Fortified milk and yogurt are excellent sources of these nutrients, and some cottage cheeses are fortified as well. Look out for unexplained , non-specific items like ‘natural flavoring’, which may hide heavily processed ingredients. This can result in unnecessary a€?wear and teara€? of the cells that produce insulin, increasing the childa€™s risk for diabetes later on. Beans are an especially good choice, since theya€™re rich in both folate as well as iron and zinc, while peanuts or peanut butter and cashews also deliver the nutritional goods. Lactose-free milk has the same nutritional value for those moms who find that dairy doesna€™t always agree with them. Be aware of the different names for sugar, and be especially careful of any long, technical sounding names that you can’t pronounce!
