The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently completed its analysis of pesticide residue levels in conventionally-grown (non-organic) produce. By eating the twelve most contaminated fruits and vegetables, nicknamed “The Dirty Dozen,”  the average person is exposed to 15 different pesticides each day, while someone eating the least contaminated will be exposed to fewer than two pesticides each day.
If you have budget constraints, your money is doing more for your health when you put it towards organic varieties of the following fruits and vegetables (listed in descending order, starting with greatest levels pesticide contamination): For help identifying organic foods in South Korea, read my post about organic labeling here.
If buying only organic fruit and veg is too pricey, you can play it safe and eat the following conventional produce to minimize your exposure. Even though they are safer than the dirty dozen, when eating conventional foods peel away edible skins and outer leaves as pesticides are often concentrated there. Otherwise I would assume it’s the same grade as the supermarkets, either from their farm or bought in bulk and sold on.
But you can buy organic vegetables in most large supermarkets in bulk so that you avoid the excessive packaging by bringing your own bags. It makes sense – organic farmers maintain rich and fertile soils which produce stronger and healthier plants. Conventional pesticides and fertilisers were approved for widespread use before any extensive testing connected these chemicals to cancer and many other diseases. The certified organic stamp on all organic products is your guarantee that no artificial chemicals or fertilisers have been used through production and handling. From the results of almost 43,000 tests, EWG estimates that consumers could reduce their pesticide exposure by almost 90 percent if they avoid the most contaminated foods and ate only foods they identified as containing the least pesticide residue.
Remember to wash all produce (conventional and organic) thoroughly with a natural fruit or vegetable cleanser.
But unfortunately, without talking with each producer yourself it’s tough to really know. The subtle flavors, delicate nutrients and enzymes in the food are protected by our innovative preparation techniques. When they are destroyed at temperatures over 118?, all of our vital organ systems are greatly taxed. Here is a fascinating and informative article entitled "Ten Reasons Why Organic Food Is Better" by Guy Dauncey!
Organic food tends to have a lower impact on the environment, and it’s often more humanely produced.
Dried Herbs and SpicesIf the herbs and spices you use most often are imported into Canada (the label will tell you so), consider buying them organic. AvocadosThe flesh of this heart-healthy fruit is protected by a hardy outer skin, so although it is sprayed, it doesn’t pose a health risk.
AsparagusLittle to no pesticides are applied to the parts of asparagus we eat when it’s being harvested because it grows so quickly, says McDonald. MushroomsConventional is also the way to go for these essentially pesticide-free fungi, which are grown indoors (to control temperature and humidity) in pasteurized compost. Cabbage and Head LettuceConventional is a solid choice here since the outer wrapper leaves are stripped from cabbage and head lettuce before they go to market, which means pesticide residues are likely lower. CornCorn is number 50 of the 51 fruits and vegetables ranked by the EWG, so it’s one of the least likely to contain pesticide residues thanks to its protective husk. Enter the new Health and Safety Watch website, a digital tool to help Canadians keep track of health and safety warinings. Here, ready-made pesto is spread on a savoury polenta base, then topped with melt-in-the-mouth mozzarella cheese, juicy grape tomatoes and crunchy pine nuts. But even with increased nutrition factored into the equation, purchasing organic food can be expensive and not feasible for everyone all the time. She has a passion for fitness and nutrition, is an avid juicer, runner and devoted yogi, not to mention a digital and social marketing guru.
Farmers are also screened on a regular basis to ensure they are meeting the strict quality control standards. This is leading to consumers avoiding these genetically engineered foods that have been designed in laboratories for resistance against pests, diseases herbicides and pesticides. Peeling and washing will not only reduce pesticide exposure, but it may also result in the loss of valuable vitamins and nutrients (especially fiber).

With all non-vegetarian and non-vegan meals, foods must in fact be cooked well at temperatures typical over 165? to be safe of the devastating bacteria often found in these items.
Food is high in assimilable proteins and essential fatty acids found in the nuts, seeds, greens, veggies & sprouts we use. Food Safety Codes are exceeded and include excellent staff hygiene habits and cleanliness of all our operations. For one, the type of corn fed to conventionally raised cows is treated with neonicotinoid insecticides, which some say kill bees and set off a cascade of environmental problems.
At that point, you won’t likely have to pay all that much more for the organic version.
So while, thanks to the protective peel, the fruit does not contain many pesticides, traditional growing practices use large amounts of chemicals, putting the local environment and plantation workers at risk. Imported dried spices are often irradiated, says Sarah Ramsden, a Vancouver Island-based certified nutritional practitioner. In its most recent report, it noted that this was a crop with multiple residues but that the fruit was most compliant for staying under the CFIA’s maximum residue limit. Organic dairy cows spend part of their spring and summer outdoors, where they graze on grass and other greens, while in the cooler months they are fed organic feed (which means you support the bees thanks to no neonicotinoids).
According to findings from the EWG, 61 percent of the cantaloupes tested didn’t show any pesticide residues. Luckily, that’s not a worry because the CFIA found very few pesticide residues in their latest round of testing of conventional store-bought honey. A meta-analysis published last summer in the British Journal of Nutrition, which looked at 343 studies across geographic regions, found that organic crop foods contained, on average, 20 to 25 percent more antioxidants and had lower levels of cadmium and pesticides. Organic cows are allowed to roam in the pasture, which means they get to eat grass and other plants, which, unlike corn, is what they’re biologically designed to munch on, keeping them healthier. We say go organic on this one for domestic and imported apples because we don’t know the impact of multiple residues.
One hundred percent grass-fed butter can be expensive and hard to find, but it’s more readily available through the summer and early fall. If you want to go organic, a number of beekeepers practise some organic techniques without official certification. This last point is key if you are pregnant or have children, since kids might be more affected by pesticides due to their lower body weight and because we have yet to learn about pesticide’s long-term effects. This also makes the meat better for us, says recent research out of the University of Toronto: Scientists found there was a higher ratio of anti-inflammatory omega-3s compared to omega-6s in grass-fed meat and dairy. Finally, organic beef does not contain antibiotics or growth hormones, so there’s less exposure to drug-resistant bacteria.
To make sense of it all, we’ve done some research to help you make budget-friendly choices.
