Combination that works: Rosemary is rich in rosmarinic and carnosic acids that stop cancer-causing heterocyclic amines from forming on cooked meat. Our small family farm is located on the banks of the Luckiamute River in the Hoskins area of Kings Valley, Oregon (20 miles northwest of Corvallis).

Demeter USA's newest board member Errol Schweizer shares how biodynamic agriculture takes organic to the next step, and how retailers can help spread the message.
As former executive global grocery coordinator at Whole Foods Market, Errol Schweizer has been on the cutting edge of consumer and food production trends like fair trade, organic and non-GMO. Here, we review luscious French desserts, clean-ingredient nut milks, speed scratch dinners and more. Demeter was founded in 1928 by Rudolph Steiner as a certification system for biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farming takes a holistic approach, taking into consideration the natural bio-rhythms of the earth, seasons, moon cycles, soil, nutrients, composting and crops. Demeter is based on biodynamic farming – a concept incorporating farm cycling between crops and livestock to create a farm organism that is self sustaining.
Soil fertility is developed through the integration of livestock, green manure, crop rotation, and field compost sprays rather than external chemical fertilisers.
Pest and disease control is managed through biological diversity that encourages natural predator prey relationships. Humus helps the soil retain water and ground water reserves are kept free from contaminants as no chemicals are allowed to be introduced into the agriculture.
Biodynamic farming focuses on the whole farm rather than just individual crops and considers forces and processes rather than just substances. It was largely due to the similarities in soil nutrient management and the avoidance of chemical fertilisers that Biodynamic and Organic farming are considered similar. Demeter was started as a certification system for biodynamic farming in the 1920’s, but it was only in 2002 that organic certification was introduced in the USA and other parts of the world.
Organic certification allows for the importation of organic fertilizers and pesticides, whereas Demeter reduces the need for external fertilizers by relying on the integrated farming system to naturally provide nutrients and reduce pest issues. Demeter requires that at least 50%of the livestock feed is cultivated within the farm system. With organic certification it is crop specific and organic crops can be sectioned from other crops on the same farm. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of Demeter certification is that it incorporates 12 biodynamic processing standards that have been developed for specific product types.
Unsustainable farming methods are currently stripping the topsoil of nutrients at 10 to 40 times the rate that it can be naturally replenished, Crawford told TIME, which could create real problems for the world’s farmers and food supplies.
To reverse these trends, Crawford recommends putting a stop to farming practices like tillage and over-grazing, and adding things like human waste to the soil as fertilizer.

It is made with cultured Biodynamic organic raw cow's milk, sea salt and vegetarian microbial rennet. Year round, they provide their cows with a natural, grass-based diet. During the growing season, the cows graze the pastures day and night, and in winter they eat a mix of stored forages harvested from the farm. A $2.99 surcharge will automatically be added to your cart to cover ice packs and insulation.
Snip a sprig of organic rosemary, remove the main stem, chop, and add to olive oil, salt, and lemon juice to create a healthy marinade. Beet greens are loaded with the calming mineral, and the B6 in chickpeas maximizes magnesium absorption in the body. Look for local, organic beet greens this spring at your farmer’s market, and soak and cook dried, organic chickpeas to avoid hormone-disrupting chemicals that can be found in canned foods. Look for organic wine, since conventional versions have been found to harbor pesticide residues. Our mission is to provide unconventionally grown food for the people of our local community.
I had the opportunity to speak to La Cense Beef in Montana last year and to learn a ton about grass fed meat, as well as organic and biodynamic farming. She started this blog and The Tender Palate, to help those food allergies and sensitivities. Then use this site as a guide, do your own research and choose your ingredients, physicians and products wisely. Now he’s channeling his passion for mission-driven food production into promoting biodynamic agriculture as a board member for Demeter USA, the official certification organization for biodynamic products. It is the oldest certification system and is considered by many as the gold standard for organic farming. No artificial chemicals or fertilisers are allowed and as a result Demeter certified biodynamic farms are reported to consistently produce higher quality crops with a significantly better taste and flavour. However, Demeter certification takes organic farming to another level, focusing not only on the individual crop production but the whole farming process and ecosystem. Organic certification denotes only that no chemical pesticides or fertilisers have been used. To qualify for Demeter certification the entire farm needs to qualify according to biodynamic farming principles.
This means that minimal manipulation is required and that the agricultural ingredients can be used to define the products. Soil stores carbon, and recent studies have shown that over-plowing can cause the release of greenhouse gasses. Depleted topsoil doesn’t hold water as well as fertile soil, and as a result, water just runs through it, requiring more irrigation to keep plants properly watered. We love this cheddar on everything from crackers to sandwiches and from salads to all alone!
This careful management and tending leads to happy cows, healthy soil, and delicious dairy products.
Choose grass-fed organic beef for healthier fat ratios and to avoid veterinary drug residues.
To us, unconventionally grown means we take a systems approach in our efforts to balance our food production with our responsibility for our local forest, field and river life and with the health of our planet.

Or how pesticides are killing the honeybees, getting in our livers, and causing cancers, autoimmune diseases, and autism. It also leaves us to wonder how much human disease there would be if we listened a little more to how the earth wants to be treated, rather than try to pound the bugs, plants and animals into submission.OK. So, here, we look to the West Coast city of Fresno as the Fresno Food Expo announces its awards nominees. According to Crawford, we have just about 60 years of good soil left at current erosion rates due to farming methods that strip the soil of nutrients, which could lead to a serious food crisis in the mid-21st century as the world population continues to grow. Carbon content is part of what gives soil its fertility; resting soil and growing cover crops can help to replace carbon in soil, but it can take decades to build up the carbon content of soil.
As the world’s fresh water supplies are stretched, this will be another major challenge for farmers to face.
We work hard to minimum our use of off-farm and petroleum dependent inputs and practice a method of agriculture that strives to emulate a natural system. Fundamental to the success of our production system is the integration of animals for fertility and weed management, our selection of crops and cultivars for pest and disease control and our practice of “farmscaping” which provides habitat for native pollinators and natural predators of pests.
We are Demeter Certified Biodynamic® as well as certified organic by Stellar Certification Services.
It’s an organism that is completely self-sustaining, producing its own animal feed and manure, and supports a diverse ecosystem of predator, prey, bird and insect populations. Health soil is the foundation of biodynamic farming, and I think that’s primarily due to the focus on fertilizers and nutrient enhancement in the soil, especially from livestock, from nutrient catch crops as well as crop rotation. That includes the bugs that will eat the critters that are going to eat your crops, but also pollinator habitats. Rotational grazing and holistic management are very popular these days, and that is actually a core principal in biodynamic, and making sure that livestock are treated humanely  so they can exhibit their natural behaviors. 17-19 Austin, TX Learn more here.
But I think the real reason for that is that biodynamic farming produces very high-quality raw materials and ingredients. And so if you try biodynamics ingredients or eat biodynamic foods, they’re usually among the best in their category. The organoleptic qualities are a reflection of the sustainability and the resilience of the soil and the growing technique. So I think the biggest key is high-quality products, growing demand in the market, growing understanding by consumers about what it means. The second thing is helping educate consumers, whether it’s through social media, shelf-talkers, promotions, their own websites or partnering with brands. These products are going to be produced at a slightly higher premium to organic, so be reasonable with the pricing. For us folks that have been around for a long time, I think it’s important that we continue to push the envelope and utilize that visibility to go deeper, because there are serious issues in our food system and we should be developing techniques that make each generation healthier, that make each crop-growing cycle more sustainable.
