Food Safety Shanghai: Tips for Expats in ChinaWhen I talk about China food safety, I don't want to be overly cynical. Institutional Reformation Targeting the Health and Food Safety Industry in ChinaThe Chinese government has certainly been actively responding and tackling the many food safety issues here. Imagine the import supply chain as a simple linear chain, and the domestic supply chain as a chain link fence with multiple directions and mutually dependent interactions. From just a quick comparison of the two, we can see that imported foods in China have an inherently more controllable supply chain, with clearly designated entry points that lends itself to full regulatory oversight. To get an idea of the extent the Chinese government is reforming its food industry just take a look at what has happened over the last year.
The most recent reform, currently a work in progress (number 1 on the list above) will be China food industry's most significant change in recent years. The drafting of China's new food safety law has had and will have significant impact on a number of sectors of the food industry. As I have already outlined most of the regulatory and food safety standards issues above, in this section I will primarily focus on food crimes and environmental issues. Although in the wake of China's most publicized food scandal, namely the Sanlu infant milk formula melamine scandal, two chief culprits were sentenced to death, China food safety violation penalties have proven to be a weak deterrent against offenders. With the financial stakes set so high and pricing pressure so extreme (everyone demanding the cheapest prices), food adulteration, counterfeiting, falsifying labels, false health claims etc.

In terms of environmental issues, particularly soil quality issues, China is reaping the rewards of the rapid and largely unregulated expansion of many seriously polluting industries from the 80s onwards. If we consider the food supply chain as a pyramid, the bottom foundation block would be soil.
So now that I have adequately armed you with a solid overview of China's food safety system, its recent and ongoing improvements, along with some of its more glaring inadequacies, I would like to discuss how we as China expats can apply regulatory knowledge to make safer food and eating choices in China. While there are many obvious smart choices regarding microbiological food safety, such as not eating in places that look overtly dirty, or employ what obviously appear like questionable food safety standards (choose restaurants with a neutral or happy face on their Food Safety Inspection Notification signs), I would like to address some of the more interesting options available to expats. Paul O'Brien is an Irish expat working as a food regulatory analyst and head editor for Chemlinked. Although some major grocery store chains do have a small section dedicated to selling "organic" food items, natural food stores can prove to be a better option when choosing organic in the long run.
When you shop at your local organic health food store, you are generally buying the freshest food possible, all the while supporting local farmers as well as the private business owners who operate their natural market.
In addition to carrying a more sustainable and fresher selection of whole foods, natural food stores tend to be a source of raw dairy products and locally raised meats and eggs (something not commonly found in larger, conventional stores,) as well as a much wider selection of organic goodies and packaged products, specialty items, quality supplements, and even personal care products and household cleaning products.
I can buy non-organic apples from the same store and keep them for at least a week and they stay good.
When they expensive, they will try sell expired organic fruits even thru they know it going make someone sick but they ain't gotta be responsible 4 it. You were only concerning abt internal that has no pesticides, probably you thought it would not have mold or something. I have to deal with them on a corporate level as well as store level and there is no difference. I became accustomed to stocking my pantry with health foods like quinoa, chia seeds and virgin coconut oil. You can also be sure you’re not unwittingly consuming any harmful chemicals or pesticides. Super Nature focuses on certified organic produce and sells fresh fruit and vegetables, deli foods, kids products, groceries, as well as organic beauty, wellness and household needs. They work directly with farms and wholesalers allowing them to deliver a wife range of fresh organic produce all year round.
As well as natural and organic foods and supplements, they offer health consultations, detox programs and an organic raw food cafe.
If you’re after hard-to-find items like raw cacao powder or organic yacon syrup then this is the site for you. They stock a variety of gluten-free and dairy-free products that can be tricky to find elsewhere. I live here and I eat here and with the proficiency of Chinese chefs there is a lot I can forgive.Based on the hype surrounding Chinese food safety I should either be dead, have grown an extra arm or at the very least have been hospitalized a few times. All imported dairy in China including infant formula requires the dairy manufacturer to undergo a stringent audit by the relevant Chinese government authorities prior to import. Using Chinese national standards such as GB14880 as a reference, it will be possible to develop new supplements that will be facilitated with greatly expedited China market access. It is also highly likely the government will publish a positive list of health food ingredients. It is also likely that traceability systems (Article 45) currently being piloted for domestically produced foods will be expanded to include imported foodsIndustry impact: Post market supervision and enforcement for imported foods in China is likely to increase. Foods that are not regulated under Chinese national standards and have no history of consumption in China require new food material registration. Impact for Industry: China's Domestic Infant formula industry will be given a major tool to help boost consumer confidence and faith in the quality of domestically produced infant formula. It will be broadly divided into a general recall system and an emergency rapid response recall system. Changes at any level of this chain have a ripple effect, that radiates from the epicenter to all downstream and upstream links in the food chain, affecting the safety and quality of food at all levels. Private sector TestingNumerous agencies are investing in privately funded traceability programs here in China.
All natural health food stores and organic markets dedicated wholly to selling organic, all natural foods have a tendency to stock produce and perishables from local sources, making them fresher and of better quality.

Privately owned organic food stores are also staffed by friendly people who are quite knowledgeable about the organic food industry and their store selections, as well as tend to remember their customers on a personal basis such as their name, and individual likes and dislikes once you become an established visitor. Some organic food markets may be smaller than others, and only offer all natural packaged goods and supplements with a limited supply of fresh, natural foods. Since arriving in Singapore I have made it my mission to track down the best and freshest organic foods available. We’ve compiled the 5 best stores in Singapore to stock up on organic produce and healthy treats. The Organic Grocer also has a slick website where you can order online, and the best news – free delivery for orders over $150.
You can shop online for organic products and health foods, or head in-store to chat to a health consultant. On the Nature’s Superfoods website you can also buy in bulk at wholesale discounted prices. Brown Rice Paradise also offer a range of organic baby food, healthy snacks, vitamins and supplements.
However, with so many food safety scandals occurring in China, as an expat it is hard to ignore food safety issues.
The old and fragmented regulatory framework was completely overhauled, and responsibilities previously divided between the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) now fall under the individual remit of the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA).The move will help to close the regulatory loop holes which have plagued China's food industry, thereby creating a regulatory agency with hallmarks similar to that of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Europe's Food Safety Authority (EFSA). As a basic explanation, we can consider how soil quality dictates the levels of fertilizer and pesticides needed, which in turn dictates the quality and safety of crops.China's polluted environment in many cases results in poor soil quality, which requires farmers to use larger amounts of pesticides and fertilizers to grow their crops, and increased amounts of veterinary drugs to keep the animals that rely on these crops healthy. Many companies specializing in implementing enterprise based traceability programs complete with publically accessible online query interfaces are currently targeting China's markets.Foreign grocery stores such as Metro and Carrefour have developed their own strict traceability systems. Because natural food stores care about their clients and want to generate customer loyalty, many stores offer some sort of reward system based on customer loyalty generated by how often you shop and what you spend. Others may be larger and more comparable to a grocery store, with a vast selection of meats, produce, and specialty items. Keeping things positive at the start, I'd like to begin my presentation by outlining the most important changes that have affected China food safety in recent years. In addition, the resources in about 30 percent of water monitoring points in major rivers was of poor quality."Finally, coming to air pollution in China, in another study by He Dongxian, an associate professor at China Agricultural University College of Water Resources and Civil Engineering, it was shown that air pollution in China causes crops to grow slower and thus require more inputs to retain normal growth. As we move through the different trophic levels from the soil to crops, to the animals that rely on these crops for feed, there occurs a process called bioaccumulation, which concentrates toxic contaminants in the animals we consume. If you are fortunate enough to live in a large city or particularly urban area, many natural health food stores even offer organic grocery delivery services.
Regardless of size and offerings, your local natural food store is sure to be a valuable resource.
Biopesticides or biocides are biological agents used as a replacement to traditional chemical pesticides. This can be a particularly convenient option for those who know exactly what they want but are too busy to find the time to shop themselves. Organic food stores of this nature can even have cafe's or juice bars within the store itself, making it an added convenience to grab a quick, healthy bite to eat. Shopping at your local organic food store can be pricier than grabbing a few items at your conventional, chain grocery store, but in the long run it can save you time and gas money if it is your one-stop shop for all your organic needs, with the added benefit of supporting and serving your local community. It feels good to give back, and when you shop at your local health food store you are ensuring a healthier lifestyle for your family, supporting local business owners who care about their customers and the environment, as well as helping to give back to your local community.
