When Barbra Streisand hits the Barclays Center stage next week to sing in her home borough for the first time in five decades, kids from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy will join in her finale. Theya€™ll sing backup when the superstar belts a€?Make Our Garden Grow,a€? from the Broadway hit a€?Candide,a€? the Daily News has learned. When Streisand takes her bows to a short excerpt from the heartwringer a€?Somewherea€? from a€?West Side Story,a€? theya€™ll hum a few bars, sources said. The group a€” mostly teens a€” will consist of more than 80 members and alums of the academya€™s Concert Chorus and Young Mena€™s Ensemble. Chorus members are old hands at performing at high-profile venues like Carnegie Hall a€” but theya€™re buzzing with the thrill of sharing a stage with the famous Grammy, Emmy and Oscar-winning singer.
The kids havena€™t gotten to rehearse with Streisand, but they can study up by watching a YouTube video of the singer holding the final note of a€?Make Our Garden Growa€? for 19 seconds.

The chorus got the Streisand gig after Markowitz played matchmaker by passing executive director Valerie Lewisa€™ name to Marty Erlichman, Streisanda€™s manager of 50 years.
Streisand, 70, last sang on her home turf in the 1950s in Erasmus Hall High Schoola€™s chorus. Ehrlichman initially asked Markowitz if if there was still an Erasmus chorus that could perform with Streisand. Mixing her trademark classics with rarer older material and selections from her more recent albums, Streisand, in her first concert appearance in six years, and backed by a 60-piece orchestra led by William Ross, keeps the capacity house enthralled.
Streisand masterfully holds the stage for two hours, joined by special guests Il Volo, trumpeter Chris Botti, and (making it a true family affair) son Jason Gould, who thrilled the audience singing solo and in a duet with his mother. The songs are framed by multi-faceted video montages of Streisand’s childhood and early career.
Specially adapted lyrics to “As If We Never Said Goodbye” and “You’re the Top” pay humorous homage to the borough. The concert also includes “Make Our Garden Grow” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide,” a song she recorded for an unreleased Broadway album in 1988. 11th and 13th concerts at the new Prospect Heights arena, the chorus will appear with her in Philadelphia Monday, where she kicks off a 10-city North American tour.

I could never imagine myself doing this,a€? said a teen chorus member whoa€™s aiming for a career on Broadway. She grew up in Williamsburg and East Flatbush before moving to Greenwich Village as a teen to pursue an acting career. In all, she sings 27 songs, nine of which she never before performed live, and three which she sings in different ways; that is, either with different arrangements or with newly composed lyrics. Her alma mater Erasmus High School, the Loews Kings Theatre, the Dodgers, her yeshiva, Brighton Beach and Brooklyn Heights all figure in her reminiscences.
Streisand is joined by Chris Botti, Il Volo, and son Jason Gould for two hours of hits, including nine songs she has never performed on a concert stage.
The superstar left her fourth-floor apartment at 3102 Newkirk Avenue (one of three residences at which she lived as a child) when she was 16 to pursue her acting career, and the rest is history.
They tell it like it is.” So Barbra Streisand informs an adoring audience at the opening of her heralded hometown return at the brand new 19,000-seat, billion-dollar Barclays Center.
