During a recent sleep consultation, I was contacted by a mom of a 6 month old who was only giving her baby two naps per day. One thing to keep in mind is that all babies aren’t the same and some transition to two naps at 5 months while others still have 4 shorter naps, at the same age. A very popular sleep book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Weissbluth, says that only 17% of babies need a third nap after 5 months old.
In my experience with countless parents, more than 17% of 5 and 6 month old babies still need three (or four) naps.
Having said that, keep in mind that your baby might not take longer naps until she has transitioned to just two naps. Take a look at our sample baby sleep and feeding schedules and decide whether it looks realistic to put your 6-month old on the 9-month old sample schedule (sleep-wise only, excluding amount of food).

I should warn you that I am in the camp that breast milk or formula should be the primary nutrition for the first year and solids come secondary. You have to understand being sleep deprived for 7 months was starting to take a toll on my marriage and my relationship with my baby.
He’s been sleeping through the night since I started letting him cry and put himself back to sleep three weeks ago. At 6 months old we set specific feeding times, but kept the same general routine since he could stay awake longer.
For this routine to work for us, we had to wait for him to be able to stay awake longer between naps. Day 3: I followed his queue to tell me he was tired and immediately set him in his bed, staying next to the crib until he settled himself down. I don’t know if this will work for you, but it did for my baby when he hated sleeping in his bed.
In fact, I’ve had to sleep train him at least three times now with immunizations, teething, being sick, etc.
Heather your routine us so good but my question is what if baby starts her day at 5.30 then should I wake her up till 9 am for nap.
Yvonne, I know this may sound strange, but one thing I’d look at is whether she is too tired when you put her down? I will tell you, though, that there is a huge growth spurt at 6 months that will make babies more hungry than normal, causing them to wake more at night to feed. So I would encourage you to do your best to ride this out for a week or two and then see where you’re standing at the other side. While it’s not based on fixed feeding and sleep times, this rhythm will support the timed schedules that come later.

Some transition to 2 naps at 6 months old and others not until 9 months and I even had a mom with a 12-month old still taking three naps! Too much over-tiredness at bedtime usually sabotages efforts of sleeping through the night.
This is because a baby can only sleep so many hours in a day, so as long as she is napping three times, it is possible her other two naps are as long as they can get. If getting your baby to take a third (or fourth) nap is a fight not worth fighting anymore, then it is probably time to permanently transition to fewer naps.

I did notice that you say that we need to have her reflux under control before sleep training and I will try and focus on that.
I’m only answering because we recently went through a spurt with my 7 month old was waking up 6-8 times a night, waking us up too! I went directly to my baby’s age group and read that I should pick 2 times to feed him during the night and those were the only times I was to go in his room. I never wanted to use crying it out as a method to get my baby to sleep, but I was at my wits end and it has been the only thing that’s worked.
He gets his bum changed every time he wakes up, eats at 7am (bottle), 9am (solids), 12pm (solids), 3pm (bottle), 6pm (solids) and 7pm (last bottle), and naps about an hour after he eats (4, 1 hour naps). Ever since our daughter was about 3 months old, we’ve discovered that she could only be awake about an hour and fifteen minutes before she got fussy so we would always put her down for a nap about that time. So for the past week I’ve extended her wake time to 1.75-2 hours and I was hoping when I did that, it would help her sleep longer!

And a rigid schedule can be downright dangerous for young babies, since it may not allow for enough feeding to accommodate their growing bodies and brains.
Type-A parents will likely do great with a rigid schedule, but if you’re parent who prefers to go with the flow, and loves it when each day is different, a rigid schedule may not work well (even if it works for your baby). With a flexible schedule, you may strive to feed at roughly the same time each day, but then you would also allow for interruptions – if baby sleeps through a feeding time, then you adjust the schedule. Or maybe you use a flexible schedule until your baby is 9 or 10 months old, at which point you make an attempt at night weaning and then move to a more rigid schedule. Just like your 4-month old went through brain development that affected her night sleep, your six month old needs to go through brain development to help her nap longer (the first nap is generally the first to lengthen).

She never naps more than 40 minutes and would wake up twice for a nighttime feed and is up at 5 generally when her reflux really kicks in and I bring her into bed with me at that time.
