Compost worms are not the same as garden earthworms - they live closer to the surface, prefer wetter conditions and eat fresher organic material like manures and mulch. How many worms should I start with?
Feed them chopped up kitchen scraps, chopped weeds, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, tea leaves, animal manure (horse and cow poo is favoured).  Add wet shredded newspaper, cardboard or wet straw each time that you feed the worms to keep the worm farm smelling sweet.

Ants – probably because something sweet is in the compost, or the compost is too dry.  Remove sweet stuff or add water.
It’s normal to have slaters, springtales, mites and other organisms in the worm farm.  If it is not bugging you (ha ha), more life is a good thing! Have a separate worm farm for your dog poo and don’t use castings from this farm on your vegetable area- use them in your general garden or around trees. After worming your dog(s), collect the poo into a bucket with a little sawdust.  After a few weeks, add it to the worm farm, otherwise it will kill the worms! So that's the low down on worms.  See also our page on compost and our courses section for upcoming Beginners Guide to Compost and Worms workshops.
Not only are these compost bins available for free, if you look in the right places, the worms are too! What follows is a story about Justine, a Compost Junkie Tribe member, and her incredible worm composting bins. Actually, Justine isn't even the star of this story (sorry Justine), her 20 year-old "Kootenay Worms" are!The Background StoryJustine and I have been going back and forth on our Facebook page for several days now.
The penny had dropped: I saw all this life hard at work on breaking down the forest debris so I figured it would be good to mix in with my seemingly static heap.

Suddenly - finally - my compost was processing at a really high rate."Quite the description, isn't it? She took a sample of her beloved worms with her, and they've since found their place in the limelight. They have multiplied to epic numbers and I will often give some of this "Kootenay Compost Starter" to my friends. Makes great compost!!!Okay, now you've met the stars of the show, so let's get into the nitty-gritty of the worm composting bins. Two Worm Composting Bins are Better than One After some probing on my part, Justine described the following about the set-up of her worm composting bins.
