As you have come across this website, you have undoubtedly been to many other websites that discuss preparing and being prepared. Almost every website you will find talks about why food storage and prepping are so important, and having enough food stockpiled for an extended period of time. If you want some ideas about what and how much you need to prep take advantage of our free eBook Emergency Survival Prepping Checklist  in the side bar on the right. In any grocery store, there is about three days’ worth of food (more or less) stocked and ready to sell. Don’t run out and buy 20 cases of MRE’s (meals ready to eat) They are expensive, and you can make a lot better purchases for less.
Keeping your food collection areas organized and accessible will help you know what you have, and how much you have. The most important thing to keep in mind is there is no right or wrong way to start stockpiling food, but the important thing to do is just get it started and educate yourself on why food storage and prepping are so important.
I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now.

The rear deck has a mounting rack that will hold up to 50 lbs and while that isn’t going to be enough to pack your entire house of survival supplies, it could take a nicely equipped bug out bag or a small child. I recently wrote a post that received a lot of interest in the comments section called “10 reasons why you do not want to bug out” where I basically said that for most scenarios, most people would be better off staying at home as opposed to bugging out. For a bug out vehicle, any bicycle type of device would not be my first choice for the following reasons. Now, there are some advantages to bikes and I can see conditions where a moped like this would be very useful. Noise Discipline – Unlike a car or a big diesel truck, this Survival Bike could be pedaled and virtually eliminate the very small amount of noise even the efficient Honda motor would be putting off. Off road – Something like this could shine on trails through the woods if you lived somewhere with an expansive trail network, you could easily skirt major metropolitan areas although you would have to be wary of people who planned to bug out to the woods. I think the concept is brilliant and they even have an upcoming Black Ops model (pictured above) that adds a lot of the gear you are looking for to the package, including a crossbow, which is in keeping with the stealth theme. We armored up with football and hockey pads and helmets and rode towards each other with big cardboard tubes we could occasionally find. Specifics matter, and without engine specs, most here are assuming thats a very wimpy little moped motor. A while back, I read a piece on converting your cheap Honda 50 or 70 dirt bike into a moped very similar to this through a kit you can buy that just needs your honda motor.
Cost of this model is prohibitive, but there are many positive aspects to the concept for a soloist, or in my case, a moto-family. From my chair, the MoPed is DOA in the places I normally ride and hunt… and if you need to carry 100-150 pounds in gear, food or a combo thereof, the MoPed is a non-starter. I have written a couple of other posts about Bug Out Bags and one dealt specifically on the subject of the contents of your bug out bag or BOB. I won’t get into weight or the absolute foolishness (in my opinion) of packing anything remotely that heavy in this post. Items like water and food usually weigh the most unless you have some really heavy gear in your bug out bag.
Using the guidelines above, I pack the items I am going to need to get to least,  at the bottom of the pack.
Once I have my sleeping bag and tent in the bug out bag, I pack most of my spare clothes, then food and cooking gear. I also carry a JetBoil that takes up about as much room as my food and I have my fuel in that same container. The top of your bug out bag or the pockets on the outside depending on what you are using should have the gear or equipment you are going to need the most.
The sides usually hold the water filter, maybe some additional items depending on what I am carrying like spare water bladders. Excellent article sir and looking forward to the article you have lined up as well regarding packing 50 to 70 pounds worth of gear in a BOB. When I started building my bob, I spent nearly an hour at REI looking at hydration options. The one I have has a quick disconnect at the bottom of the reservoir, allowing removal without un-routing the hose from the pack.

Actually, if you plan to Bug Out into the closest national forest with nothing more than your Bug Out Bag, your family and your trusty .22 rifle, I would not count on using these methods below as your sole source of food for a wide variety of reasons. Small-game snares can be made from the interior strands of parachute cord, braided strands of sinew, or fishing line.
Position the snare at head height and tie off the end to a tree, a stake in the ground, or a log that the animal can only drag a short distance as the noose tightens.
This snare functions by setting a trigger that snatches game into the air as it strains against the noose. The second thing to consider is if the branch is strong enough to hold whatever you are hunting for. Deadfalls that use logs or rocks to squash prey are typically baited, but they also work along trails or outside burrows when a passing animal or bird brushes against the trigger. One of the easiest traps to make and set, the spring deadfall depends upon the game going after the bait, so it’s best used for carnivorous animals and rodents such as pack rats. Employing fire-hardened spear points under tension, these can be deadly to predator and prey alike. This trip-wire set is effective for wild pigs, deer, or other game that regularly sticks to defined game trails.
The last thing you need to do if you are in the woods and are depending on spearing an animal for dinner is to jab a spear into your upper thigh or worse (gulp). Birds can be much easier to trap than mammals and should be among your first targets for a meal. Set this trap in a large clearing where birds will naturally seek it out as a landing place.
Step Three Tie an overhand knot in the cord in back of the slip noose and place the stick against the hole. Make the walls of the funnel trap with piled-up stones or tightly spaced sticks driven solidly into the river or lakebed.
I’ve read so much about these I really want to grab my go bag and try some of these traps out. When I attended USAF Survival School we were taught to put out at least 10 traps to expect one result. Citizens, local governments and the federal government alike were not prepared for the devastation because they used history as a template for future events. The mantra leading up to a natural disaster, from local authorities and even from many experts is to stock up on candles, food, water and batteries and have enough for at least three days.
The manual has not been updated to account for an antiquated infrastructure and power grids and it does not consider the financial conditions of cities and the country as a whole. Emergency shelters are not stocked with food, water or other essentials while large generators sit idle due to maintenance problems.
There is currently a debate in Washington DC as to whether or not to allocate funds for the cities and citizens affected by super storm sandy, this is months after the storm. The following is a list of recommended supplies, tools and materials and it is not a comprehensive list.

Store and operate your generator where it is protected from rising waters, rain, snow and other damaging conditions. Never operate a generator in an enclosed area to include crawlspaces, garages, and carports or near any openings into the home. It is recommended you have a generator capable of handling up to 7,000 watts of surge to ensure you can operate a refrigerator, heater or water pump at the same time.
Review: Ruger Mini 14 Traveling Tip for BOBa€™s and Backpacks Hick’s Law Dandelion Jelly Sale! By adding an extra $20 a week to your shopping trip in as little as 3 months you will have accumulated a nice pantry full of food. If you make a list of the items your family likes to eat, you will know what to look for while you are doing your normal shopping. The last thing you want is to have food that is way beyond it’s expiration date or think you are prepared and run out too soon. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. I do this whenever I don’t have something pushing into my thoughts as readily as I hope and it happens occasionally when writer’s block hits me. You can pedal just like a regular bike, or you can use one of two options of engine to power you along at a top speed of 24 MPH.
I also said that the circumstances of your life, the disaster or threat you are facing and your personal situation would dictate whether anything like this was possible. All someone needs to do really is to hit you with a big rock or a baseball bat when you motor by and I bet you will lose your balance and fall. The product description is hilarious and I am amused by the black ops model including a tomahawk and crossbow.
The ideas expressed on this site are solely the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the opinions of anyone else.
For the uninitiated, the Bug Out Bag’s purpose is to give you everything you should need to live for 72 hours if you are forced to evacuate your location suddenly. My contention is that there are too many people that are throwing everything but the kitchen sink in their packs and I feel that there is something of an insane rush to get everything humanly possible into your BOB without much thought as to the why or the weight.
It is not a Bug Out Suitcase even though I swear some people pack more into a Bug Out Bag than they do for a week down in Cancun. I will talk about intelligently packing what you do have because regardless of whether you have an ultra-light pack or some behemoth weighing as much as a 4th grade boy, you need to pack this in a way that will make it as comfortable as possible to carry.
I would argue that you could just as easily bug out with a back pack as you could with any military looking pack from Blackhawk, maybe even easier. To be successful, you want to pack the right gear, but you need to pack it the right way too and that means keeping your center of gravity as close to you as possible.
A lot of people have moved to carrying water bladders like a Camelbak and most new packs have a place right inside the back next to your spine for carrying this.
I still prefer the tent and it is one of the last items I need so It goes in the bottom of the bag. I say most of my clothes because depending on the weather I will carry a fleece or windbreaker too and I want this where I can get to it easily.
My jetboil can boil water for drinking, cook food or quickly heat my water for coffee in the mornings.
My pack has a compartment that is waterproof and that is where the lighters and fire kit go along with my headlamp and snacks. I carry two spares so that when I get to camp I can pump plenty of water for washing up, cooking and even breakfast in the morning. Nalgene bottles, stainless bottles, Camelbak systems, Platypus systems, and eventually Osprey systems. I take the ambush with me on day hikes or when I am sitting in the deer stand and the water capacity is tremendous. Now, I will be the first to say that using primitive traps and the methods below are not the easiest thing in the world. To tell the truth, I wouldn’t recommend Bugging Out for any real reason unless you have zero other options or the risks of staying put are too great. If you have the time, patience and are lucky enough to have an animal wander through your path, the traps below can be used to catch game and it is wise to have knowledge like this in your back pocket just in case. Snares stout enough to secure game as large as deer need to be made of rawhide or parachute cord.
You have probably walked over hundreds of them if you have spent any time at all in the woods.
You can set this up on an animal path, but waiting for someone to wander along might take a long time so bait is ideal. Always set and approach an impaling trap cautiously from behind and use only in an emergency in remote areas, where another human or domestic animals are not going to blunder past. Make certain the horizontal thrust of the spear is at a level that will impale the body of the game sought. Again, the choice of wood here is going to be important because the trap has to impale the animal with enough force to kill it while not letting it escape. Tie a rock to a thin cord and pass the cord through the hole in the pole, then make a slip noose that drapes over the perch. Close the entrance to the trap, roil the water, then either spear the fish or net them with a seine made by tying a shirt or other cloth between two stout poles. I haven’t ever used it, but the logic seems to give you a much better chance of success provided you are near a water source and there are fish in there obviously.
A day might not be enough time to see the results and I wouldn’t leave the trap set and go home, but practicing now before you need to use the skills is always better in my opinion.
They must be checked from afar twice daily to keep from losing your game to a fox or other predator that may be attracted to the scene. What happens is eventually maggots appear and fall off into the water attracting fish constantly.
The most recent super storm that ripped along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States left death and destruction in its wake. Therefore, the a€?once in a lifetime occurrencea€? can happen again because you cannot use history as an indication of future events. Many cities and communities are struggling financially and this plays a role in recovery efforts. The ad hoc repairs always seem to be just enough to get a city or community to the next disaster. The number of items you might possibly need would fill several garages so you have to prioritize and realize that if you currently live in an apartment or house you will already have many of the essentials needed.
Obviously if your area is susceptible to a storm surge or heavy flooding it is assumed you will evacuate but otherwise rivers and streams may cause a few inches or feet of water to be present and equipment must be above the floodwaters. Use the proper gauge extension cords and if you have a standby automatic generator make sure, the local power company is aware you have one. Hopefully all of us take it to heart and are busy preparing and adding to their own stocked food storage. He said that he has been a truck driver since 1999, and up until 2004, when he would pull into truck stops, if he got in too late all of the spaces for overnight parking were full. Food Storage and Prepping isn’t just preparing for an economic collapse or a banking crisis,  having a well-stocked pantry could help see your family through leaner times like loss of  income or a  job.
It is a good time now to start planning different recipes to try with food that store well, such as SPAM, or canned chicken.

And if you are like me, and always wondering why, I challenge you to find the answers.  It may not be what you wanted to hear, or know, but it may be invaluable to you in the future. I was lucky enough to stumble on something that many of you, myself included might not have seen yet, but that could be an excellent bug out vehicle option in the right circumstances. That sure beats the heck out of walking if you are forced to bug out and with the two included RotopaX 1 Gallon fuel tanks, your range is potentially 400 to 500 miles according to the MotoPed site.
If you found yourself unable to stay in your home shelter, bugging out may become necessary and having a means of transportation, while there are some drawbacks, does have it’s advantages. The cool factor is pretty high but the survival value is highly circumstantial and not practical for about 95% of people.
The author may or may not have a financial interest in any company or advertiser referenced. A bug out bag should be pre-packed with all of your supplies so that you can grab it, throw it on your back and walk or run out your car, or head for the hills.
I have another post lined up to rehash this concept under a different theme, but I have heard others talk about packing 50 to 70 pounds in their Bug Out Bag and they plan to walk for hundreds of miles if necessary. We are going to talk about how to pack your bug out bag to take the most advantages of weight distribution and tried and true backpacking tips as possible. The last thing you need is a big pack that keeps you off balance and puts unneeded stress on your back. Keep the heavy stuff as close to you as possible and low as opposed to above your shoulders. Additionally, having your sleeping bag on the bottom gives you a nice soft cushion when you set your pack down. This way if I get hungry, I don’t have to dig in my bug out bag, just unzip the top compartment. It will really come down to reducing weight and emphasizing on what is necessary and what is a nice to have. People who rely solely on trapping food routinely have multiple traps, they aren’t the heaviest people in the world generally and often can go without food for a few days if they are unlucky to find nothing in their traps. Of course if you have time to plan ahead, you can purchase snare traps now and put them in your bag.
Very thin wire is probably the best for this type of snare I think because when tightened the wire doesn’t easily work itself loose. You better choose a pretty beefy branch and make sure that your cordage will hold the full weight of an animal who will be trying very hard to get away if the impact from the branch swinging up hasn’t taken care of them pretty quickly. If you return and find the trap has been tripped, be careful removing the object that you used.
When a bird flies down and perches, it will displace the stick, the rock will fall, and its feet will be caught as the loop quickly slides through the hole. Wear eye protection when setting spring snares or ensure you are out of the way of the trigger and other parts in motion.
The storm has also shown that politics and bureaucracy played a role in the reaction time and recovery efforts of the government.
In other words, the government assumes they will have boots on the ground within three days of a disaster.
The super storm was not categorized as a hurricane because it was not considered hurricane strength.
I like you, go to the different sites on a daily basis and have been learning and preparing, and always stock up when I can. The simple answer, not very long. Have a look at her YouTube video above to get a different perspective on the whys of food storage and why it is so important.
Remember when mopeds were all the rage for people who had too much money for a bike and didn’t really want to pedal? It probably won’t be my next gear purchase unless I win the lottery, strike oil in my backyard, or am suddenly crowned the king of England.
In the mountains they are great too… same deal, low-range and it will climb a tree with a lot of weight.
Any action taken as a result of information, analysis, or advertisement on this site is ultimately the responsibility of the reader. Backpackers have been bugging out for a long time and it pays to take a lesson or two from people who have more experience than the average Doomsday Prepper fan when it comes to packing everything they need for 72 hours on their back and living to talk about it.
I have my sleeping bag in a compression sack, but if I have any fear of rain I would add a waterproof bag instead. The Camelbak bladder for this pack is really tough and has the detachable drinking tube too. Set this snare up in a curve on the trail and cover the snare as much as possible with leaves to camouflage it. The first is that you want to choose a tree that will be both springy enough that it will spring back quickly enough to set the snare. Also ensure that your rope is tied to the branch in such a way that it can’t easily be stripped off. It is possible the rock is just holding down the animal who could scurry off quickly after you raise the weight.
I think I liked it more than them, but regardless if fish are near, this is far easier than fishing.
The take away from all this is that you as a citizen may very well be on your own for days, weeks or even longer in the event of a natural disaster. This of course is no longer true and has been proven such from recent and not so recent events.
The items are not disaster specific because you will need most of the supplies, tools and materials during any crisis. These can be nice alternatives to always preparing from a can, and they can be found cheap! I thought they were a thing of the past replaced by the obnoxious scooters that I see more and more everywhere. Running out the door isn’t the time to worry about this, so it may make more sense for you to pack your sleeping bag in a waterproof sack regardless.
One of these days I am going to pull the trigger and get a Camelbak so that I don’t have to carry it, but I still think the good old bottle is easier in some aspects.
This may be hard to do because the location of the snare will need to depend on what tree branches or trees are near. And remember knowledge is power, the more you know, the better prepared you will be for any situation.
The scooters are not obnoxious because I am against saving gas or anything like that; I would just like them to keep up with the flow of traffic. This is also great because if you are in the woods for a long time, a trap like this can keep bringing you fish and keep them alive until you are ready to eat them. There are few things less annoying that getting behind some 300 pound guy on the back of a dinky scooter going up a hill with his Hitler helmet on.
This will probably kill them later but you might not be there to enjoy the benefits and you might be out of your only snare materials.
