Congratulations Jack C, Jack W, Quinn, Michael and Rudy who camp home in one piece from Survival Camp in Castlemaine. This Fourth of July we should read Professor Paul Finkelman's excellent article after many incidents of recent racial hatred, gun violence, and President Obama's eulogy at Charleston, S.C. THOMAS JEFFERSON is in the news again, nearly 200 years after his death — alongside a high-profile biography by the journalist Jon Meacham comes a damning portrait of the third president by the independent scholar Henry Wiencek. We are endlessly fascinated with Jefferson, in part because we seem unable to reconcile the rhetoric of liberty in his writing with the reality of his slave owning and his lifetime support for slavery.
There is, it is true, a compelling paradox about Jefferson: when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, announcing the “self-evident” truth that all men are “created equal,” he owned some 175 slaves.
But while many of his contemporaries, including George Washington, freed their slaves during and after the revolution — inspired, perhaps, by the words of the Declaration — Jefferson did not.
Rather than encouraging his countrymen to liberate their slaves, he opposed both private manumission and public emancipation. Destroying families didn’t bother Jefferson, because he believed blacks lacked basic human emotions.
In 1820 Jefferson was shocked by the heated arguments over slavery during the debate over the Missouri Compromise. If there was “treason against the hopes of the world,” it was perpetrated by the founding generation, which failed to place the nation on the road to liberty for all. America's police forces increasingly serve as a private corporate army, beyond the reach of the law. America's founders established grand juries to protect citizens from frivolous prosecution. The ultimate message is clear: police can kill American citizens without cause and face no public trial. But the larger issue is a police apparatus now inflicting random terror in service of a corporate state that has mutated far beyond public control. We are still being assaulted by a cynical 40-year drug war used to disenfranchise and violate the basic rights of millions of Americans with no real recourse. In the name of that drug war, and the one on terror, police randomly confiscate (steal) billions in cash from citizens of all races, in direct violation of the Bill of Rights and any sense of a real legal system. Throughout our history, race has been the reliably lethal facade for all sorts of political repression.
Here’s Why: Veterans are being denied life saving care they have earned for injuries and illness sustained in service. Winter survival school in 1965 for naval aviators in my class flying the RA5C at Sanford Florida occurred in October in Brunswick, Maine.
To reduce personal injuries, if they sighted us and said, “You're caught,” we had to surrender without physical conflict. A few times some of us ran to get through an open portion of the forest so we could hide in trees, foliage, and shrubbery. In the middle of the night, something awakened me causing me to pick up my sleeping bag and look around.
I remained silent hidden in the underbrush sweating, tired, and scratched from racing by trees with hanging branches and sharp twigs. I joined the other team members outside the concentration camp where the SERE instructors lectured us about the way anyone caught by an enemy should act to have a chance to survive in a war.
The school graded us on our leadership ability to resist providing any useful information to the enemy and always pursue a way to escape. He threw me around the room about ten times, but I always bounced back facing him with a stance showing I had prepared for this drill. AUGUSTA, Maine — Even for the officers who found him, it’s hard to believe that Christopher Knight lived alone in the Maine woods for 27 years until you meet him or see the campsite where he lived for so long. Hughes arrested Knight while the man was allegedly burglarizing the Pine Tree Camp in Rome.
There were trash barrels and a makeshift landfill where Knight buried his garbage when the barrels were full.
With the exception of a pair of eyeglasses, everything in Knight’s possession were items that he stole from nearby camps, including the Pine Tree Camp, a summer camp which caters to children and adults with disabilities. One of Knight’s prized possessions was a small transistor radio that he listened to frequently, as evidenced by spent batteries that detectives found littered around the site.
Hughes said he showed Knight a map and asked why he never went beyond North Pond, Little North Pond and East Pond. Shockingly, said Hughes and Vance, there was no evidence of a heat source at Knight’s campsite. Knight told the officers that he’s never been sick or injured and has no health problems that he knows about.
Vance said Knight, who is being held at Kennebec County Jail, is adjusting well to civilization and is conversing with others.
Hughes said to his knowledge there was no active missing person report issued for Knight, though at one point years ago there was a search for him in the Rome woods.
An exercise in taking Donald Trump at his word paints a frightening pictureLet’s not get stuck in the past tense.
I cut a jeep trail in about halfway to the cabin from the road , and one has to walk the rest of the way. I have a problem with drawing water from the well , like I said it's almost 50 feet deep , the water is good , but I used 1.25 ID pipe , in my ignorance of physics , I didn't know a standard pitcher pump can't pull that far. In 1910, with Boy Scouts barely a year old, Scouts in Thetford, Vermont were preparing for a part in the town's 150th anniversary pageant when some of the girls raised a question: Why was their no scouting organization for them?
The town's school principal took the problem of no scouting organization for girls to Luther and Charlotte Gulick.
By 1910, Luther already had a long career as an educator and physical education advocate with the YMCA and on the International Olympic Committee.
Together they were planning to establish two summer camps -- one for boys and the other for girls -- near Raymond, Maine. The Gulicks took a holistic approach to education, believing that people needed to tend to their bodies, minds and spirits to be happy and successful. The Camp Fire Girls organization, however, had already exploded in popularity by the time he died.
Charlotte Gulick, who would live until 1938, continued her work with Camp Fire Girls after Luther's death, and the scouting movement in America would never slow down. From the rugged coastal areas to forested mountains, wilderness lovers will find dozens of camping opportunities. There are approximately 50 campsites located near the lakeshore, giving you easy access to watersports as well as hiking trails. Blue State Park is the largest state park in Maine, consisting of over 8,000 acres of protected land.

There are two campgrounds with 90 campsites total, all of which have nearby access to toilets. The island can only be accessed by personal watercraft, offering a secluded camping experience at one of 12 campsites. Camping is permitted at designated places along the waterway, and visitors are encouraged to make advance reservations to ensure a campsite is available. Although 95% of the forest is in New Hampshire, the Maine portion of the forest offers spectacular camping opportunities. On arrival in Castlemaine the Scouts were given a map and had to use it to navigate their hike into the camp.
Time and again, we play down the latter in favor of the former, or write off the paradox as somehow indicative of his complex depths.
Wiencek’s depiction, Jefferson was always deeply committed to slavery, and even more deeply hostile to the welfare of blacks, slave or free. Too often, scholars and readers use those facts as a crutch, to write off Jefferson’s inconvenient views as products of the time and the complexities of the human condition. Over the subsequent 50 years, a period of extraordinary public service, Jefferson remained the master of Monticello, and a buyer and seller of human beings. Even at his death, Jefferson failed to fulfill the promise of his rhetoric: his will emancipated only five slaves, all relatives of his mistress Sally Hemings, and condemned nearly 200 others to the auction block.
He sometimes punished slaves by selling them away from their families and friends, a retaliation that was incomprehensibly cruel even at the time. As a state legislator he blocked consideration of a law that might have eventually ended slavery in the state.
After reading about the slave revolts in Haiti, Jefferson wrote to a friend that “if something is not done and soon done, we shall be the murderers of our own children.” But he never said what that “something” should be.
And millions of white Americans are under the illusion that what was done to Michael Brown and Eric Garner can't happen to them.
But today's corporate state has twisted the system to protect killer police from public scrutiny, putting them above the law. Thankfully, Americans throughout the US have risen up in protest, demanding social justice and an end to racism.
Police departments use these officially sanctioned armed robberies to help fund heavy war-time weaponry also coming to them as "surplus" from the federal military. Meanwhile a San Diego rapper with no record of violence has been charged with multiple "crimes" based on his lyrics. It also gives the corporate media the perfect distraction behind which to hide the root problem. But the ultimate cancer we face is the rise of an all-powerful corporate state and its iron grip on a violent, unaccountable private army licensed to kill--no matter what the race or cause--while knowing that the once-sacred right to a public trial does not apply to them. Those who think themselves somehow above it all by virtue of race or class are simply not paying attention. Take a few minutes to sign the petition and hear from Josh Christmon, a Purple Heart recipient and U.S. Too many service members are wrongfully discharged from the military for displaying symptoms of a mental health condition when they should have received mental health care and a diagnosis - instead they got dumped with bad paper.
If we really care about the troops, we must make sure our veterans get the care they have earned.
The first day we attended an orientation session in a classroom with reading materials and lectures on survival, evasion, resistance, and escape (SERE). The written materials contained a list of things to do and to avoid; such as acting violent—they would kill anyone who did, and it would cause harm to others. When they started to abuse one of our men by knocking him to the ground, I ran to him and picked him up. He grabbed me by the overcoat, and threw me as hard as he could against the padded wall behind him.
I stared at him with anger written all over me and held my stance as if to challenge him to abuse me again, but said nothing. He said witnessing the burglary on surveillance cameras and then arresting Knight triggered a wave of adrenaline, but the most amazing surprises were still in store as Knight brought Hughes and Maine State Trooper Diane Vance to his home in the woods. Hughes said Knight told him he enjoyed rock station WTOS and conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh. He stockpiled food he stole from nearby camps in the fall and tried to gain weight in order to survive the winter, but he did not try to feed himself by hunting and fishing.
It was 1986, not long after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Russia, that Knight decided to simply vanish. The Gulicks, both born in 1865, were firm believers in physical fitness and the importance of play for children. Luther Gulick served as the organization's first president, when it officially incorporated in 1912, until he died in 1918.
But I’m really glad we have mostly left the days of confused Native appropriation behind. The campsites are maintained and staffed during the summer months from May 15 through Columbus Day.
Dozens of campsites dot the trail, most of which are accessible by kayak, boat, or other personal watercraft. Once there, they chose sites to build shelters from sticks and coffee bush that would keep the weather off them should it turn cold or wet. It had been the target of racists before.  We might look at the third president of our country and see where some of these roots derive from despite the traditional reverence accorded to Jefferson because of his role in writing the Declaration of Independence.
Wiencek, who sees him as a sort of fallen angel who comes to slavery only after discovering how profitable it could be, seem willing to confront the ugly truth: the third president was a creepy, brutal hypocrite. His proslavery views were shaped not only by money and status but also by his deeply racist views, which he tried to justify through pseudoscience.
A proponent of humane criminal codes for whites, he advocated harsh, almost barbaric, punishments for slaves and free blacks. Citizens of color, the young, the poor and the elderly are being systematically stripped of the right to vote by a modern electronic Jim Crow.
As anger with America's billionaire elite spreads, we can certainly expect the counter-attacks on open speech to escalate.
Should the attacks on the internet succeed, we'll also be hearing less and less about them. Marine Corps combat veteran who served in Iraq who was wrongfully discharged with a “less than honorable” military discharge. The camp trainers issued us a winter jacket, green fatigues, canteen, hunting knife, cap, and gloves.
The information taught us what to eat in the wild and what to avoid; it warned that after they captured us they would subject us to interrogation and physical abuse. As I slowly passed a pine tree, I saw an enemy waiting behind another pine a few feet away. Our group completed a few miles of progress toward a checkpoint each had to achieve by the next day. A large tree with lots of loose leaves around it seemed to provide protection from the elements and a primitive bed. Hours later, I realized that eventually these brutal enemy soldiers would herd us like cattle into the camp. He took me to an intelligence officer at a desk who wore a uniform with ribbons, medals, and decorations.

He knew who the president is and had a general understanding of recent news events, but he had no interest in any human interaction.
Hughes, who owns property in the Rome area, said he was relieved to have finally solved a decades-old mystery. Finally found a gizmo called an inertia pump , and a canadian company that sells them cheaply , rather than make my own. In other areas, primitive backcountry campsites allow you to get away from civilization for a few days. Campsites fill up quickly in this popular park, so consider making an advance reservation during the summer months. Both summer and winter camping opportunities are available, giving you a variety of ways to experience the Allagash Wilderness. The amenities at these campgrounds vary; some have running water and flush toilets, while others do not. The weather was reasonably kind to them and it didn’t rain but it was cold and dropped to only 1° Celsius overnight. Even the flag of the confederacy has provoked many to act to bring it down or request that governors consider that. Known for expansive views of citizenship, he proposed legislation to make emancipated blacks “outlaws” in America, the land of their birth. The dominance of a corporate one-party system is furthered by the use of privately-owed, easily-rigged electronic voting machines.
He wore a black Russian uniform, dark overcoat, large boots, and black furry hat with ear flaps buttoned. A loud siren wailed and a voice from a loud speaker informed us if they hadn’t captured us, to turn ourselves over to the guards at the concentration camp.
As a prisoner of war (POW), each of us needed to use our knowledge to escape if we could, but while in captivity to keep together, protect each other, and stay healthy. Extremely thirsty, sweating profusely, I realized what a horrible torture awaited any prisoner who remained in the black box for any significant time.
In the midst of it all was an overturned plastic bucket where Knight spent untold hours sitting. To conceal his location, he didn’t leave the campsite between November and March so he wouldn’t leave tracks in the snow. The foregoing prohibitions also apply to your employee(s), agent(s), student(s) or any personnel under your direction or control.
Choose a camping experience suitable for your experience and wilderness abilities, and Maine will not disappoint.
Although most visitors camp at Baxter State Park in the summer, winter camping opportunities are also available. Detailed information about trail campsites can be found in the Maine Island Trail Guide, updated annually.
Obama mentioned in his eulogy bringing it down would not be an act of political  correctness, nor would it detract from those who fought in the civil war, but rather that the purpose the South fought to preserve slavery was wrong.
Opposed to the idea of royal or noble blood, he proposed expelling from Virginia the children of white women and black men. Feeling worn out from expending so much energy, I sweated profusely from running, dodging, and hiding from the enemy. I felt he had as much right to the warmth as I did and allowed him to join me as I chuckled to myself. Hungry, tired, and angry, I decided the camp provided an opportunity to show them I had what it took to survive and help my team. They walked me to a hallway where I could see a series of rooms with a thick plastic window about my height in each doorway.

When he did venture out — which was always under darkness — he tried to step on roots, rocks and stumps as much as possible in order to not leave footprints.
Hiring a Registered Maine Guide is an excellent way to learn more about camping and survival in Maine.
Campers must register at a ranger station and ensure that they have appropriate warm-weather gear. Over 250 backpacking shelters dot the Appalachian Trail, providing primitive accommodations for campers. They scavenged for their food by locating hidden skewers in a dry creek bed and using only a billy and dutch oven as cooking aids managed to cook over the weekend a whole Red Snapper, spam stew, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, potatoes, carrots, damper, dumplings, boiled eggs, and tea. Perhaps now we can face the need to make it harder to put guns into the hands of people not fit to handle a gun. They provided a contour map to assist our goal to go to checkpoints that led to a simulated concentration camp. Who would ever believe I spent the night with a field mouse under a tree in a snowy Maine forest? I heard a lot of commotion outside as they yelled at other trainees and tried to justify their Communist beliefs as Russian guards.
You can install it on any computer, even if you can't install applications, and it will ensure your computer stays secure and that you can still visit our website. After almost three decades of living like a hermit near a pond in central Maine, where he supported himself by stealing food from nearby camps, a 47-year-old man was arrested last week, police said on Tuesday. He told police that in all his time in the woods he encountered only one other person walking along a footpath. I've seen bear tracks on the river , but I think they don't want anything to do with the dogs.
Fun was had and skills learnt in collecting and treating water to drink, mock bush fire and fire fighting exercises and water testing of the bush shelters. Here are some sobering thoughts on one of our national heroes who was a slaveholder when he drafted the Declaration of Independence. The military personnel assigned to the SERE training placed “Russian” enemy soldiers in the forest who wandered through the area to capture us. After drinking from my canteen, having an energy bar, and chewing on some nuts, I fell asleep.

A bush bashing hike on from the ‘Monk’ back to camp enabled them to show great navigation skills and team work as did the air crash first aid scenario where they rescued an injured pilot and carried him to safety on a bush stretcher then ensured their own rescue by using reflective emergency blankets, smoking fires and semaphore. You may be surprised to find his behavior fell far short of what we now expect of our leaders, yet in his time, and even now, he was, and is, revered for his passionate embrace of independence and the American Revolution. Determined not to allow any of these bullies catch me again, I moved silently and slowly from tree to tree. As I crawled out with help from trainees, I saw the guards taking other members of our survival team for interrogation. Once I entered the forest with my assigned team, we gathered briefly to discuss how we would try to reach our goals. Since I was a fast runner, I decided if another enemy appeared I would use my speed to avoid him.
