The Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality (CSSI), which was established in 2003 under the 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) program, is now supported by the Global Center of Excellence (GCOE) program of Japan.
In order to tackle these problems in an interdisciplinary and integrative manner, the CSSI established the following five research divisions: the Structure and Change of Social Stratification and Inequality Research Division (hereafter abbreviated as the Structure and Change Research Division), the East Asia Research Division, the Minority Research Division, the Fairness Research Division, and the Transnational Migration Research Division. In addition to the research and educational activities carried out by each of these divisions, the CSSI promotes organic cooperation among the divisions through regular workshops and international symposia. The center has two educational programs for postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students. As education advances with the help of technology, it becomes very clear that the modern day classroom needs are very different from the conventional classroom needs. The evolved 21st century classroom is a productive environment in which students can develop the skills they will require in the workplace and teachers are facilitators of their learning.
The educational practices of the traditional classroom are no longer effective and teachers must develop new teaching strategies that are radically different from those employed in the traditional classrooms.
A 21st century classroom has many characteristics associated with it which distinguish it from the classrooms of the past centuries. Student-centric: In these classrooms, students play an active role in their learning and teachers serve as mere guides. Computing devices: Computers are readily available in modern classrooms, since they are essential tools for 21st century students and replace the utilities of pen and paper.
Adaptive learning: Any classroom will always have students of different types of learning abilities in it which often makes it difficult for teachers to make sure that all of them understand the concepts. Students understand and follow the rules and procedures: The learning environment is carefully planned and well-organized. Students take responsibility of their learning: As students are encouraged to actively participate in their own learning, they become responsible for their learning. Performance-based assessments: Regular performance-based assessments are carried out by teachers through various methods which are not restricted to tests.
Collaborative learning: Learning through collaboration is one of the most effective forms of learning. Technology plays a big role in developing all of these characteristics for modern classrooms.

Social workers who have served in Haiti either before or after the earthquake say the disaster provides an unprecedented opportunity for the social work profession to demonstrate the power of its holistic, strengths-based, person-in-environment perspective. Lassiter and colleague Darin Toliver, MSW, traveled to Haiti in March to provide social work services to earthquake victims.
Neither Lassiter nor Toliver had previous experience working in Haiti, but the reports of the death and destruction there compelled them to action.
Like everyone, Lassiter and Toliver had been inundated by media reports about the situation in Haiti. Despite the depressing scenes they witnessed, Lassiter and Toliver also saw how much the Haitian people embodied the social work concept of resiliency. Project Medishare has been working in Haiti for more than a decade, and many social workers have traveled to Haiti over the past several months as part of the organizationa€™s mental health trips. The need for social workers to participate in Project Medisharea€™s efforts has increased substantially in the wake of the earthquake, says Jennifer Browning, the organizationa€™s communications director. There are several distinctive features of social work that make the profession particularly well suited to be a major force in the rebuilding of Haiti, Toliver says. Social workers also are trained to start their work where the client is, a philosophy that is not necessarily ingrained in other helping professions, says Zola Bruce, MSSW, executive director of Unified for Global Healing, a Brooklyn, NY-based organization that plans to lead a multidisciplinary service trip to Haiti in July. The direct provision of mental health and case management services to Haitians is only one way social workers can help the country move forward.
Haiti is in desperate need of the educational infrastructure to train social workers, says Antoine Atouriste, MSW, a retired Haitian Army colonel who moved to the United States in the late 1990s to pursue higher education, including earning a graduate degree in social work from Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. When Chad Dion Lassiter, MSW, traveled to Haiti in March to aid in the reconstruction efforts, he went to help others.

The focus of a 21st century classroom is on students experiencing the environment they will enter as modern day workers and developing their higher order thinking skills, effective communication skills, collaboration skills, making them adept with using technology and all other skills that they will need in the 21st century workplace. Prior to this, Clement worked as a Regional Resource Mobilization and Partnership Adviser for UNFPA Eastern Europe and Central Asia and as the Resource Mobilization Chief for UNICEF India Country Office. She helped lead and launch a network of high-performing schools within the government system.
Rathish also heads the Products division of Sattva that creates new products and tools to solve social impact problems for the entire ecosystem from corporates to foundations and social organizations. His areas of interest include public-private partnerships and creating market based solutions. He has worked with Government institutions, International organizations and corporate sector.
He joined as Executive, School Fundraiser and today serves the organization as one of its Directors.
Prior to this role, he was the Senior VP and Head of CSR at Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital where he was a vociferous advocate of tackling healthcare through addressing it as a whole, including issues of waste, water and sanitation. Over the last few years, Krishna has been working with the senior management of leading non-profits, social enterprises, corporate and funders to make their social impact initiatives sustainable and scalable. Girish Joshi, Senior General Manager by designation Heads Listing Business at Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). He represents BSE in Sustainability Working Group (SWG) of World Federation of Stock Exchange (WFE) and also Sustainable Stock Exchange initiative of the United Nations. While working on Pratham’s footprint in the northern states, he set up learning enhancement programs in government schools of Punjab, Himachal, and Uttarakhand. He has consulted with a number of organisations in the Industrial Products, Aerospace and Defence, Auto verticals.
In 1998 he stood rank third in Pune University in Social Work programme and Rank 1st in Human Resource Management. Her main responsibility is identifying new opportunities for revenue growth and achieving annual plans along with instituting and implementing strategies and plans. But for the inhabitants of the Caribbean nation of Haiti, much of its recent history has been dark and dismal. It is also a strong reminder of the need to better prepare social workers to act in an international context. The two made the journey under the auspices of Project Medishare for Haiti, Inc., a Miami-based organization that promotes health-improvement and development efforts in Haiti.
This was little preparation, however, for what they would encounter when their plane landed in Port-au-Prince: the smell of death and the looks of hopelessness and despair on the faces of those suffering due to injuries, illness, and malnourishment.
During their eight-day stay in Haiti, Lassiter and Toliver engaged in play therapy with children, connecting families with resources, visiting an orphanage, gathering ethnographic data, and forging partnerships with nongovernmental organizations.
They saw people pulling together to help one another, trying to find work and trying to put their lives back together.
During these trips, teams of social workers and other mental health professionals do grief counseling, work with patients who have lost limbs due to amputations, and assuage the overall trauma experienced for people who have lost loved ones, homes, and jobs. Among these is social workersa€™ ability to see peoplea€™s needs in a variety of areas and to help them connect with resources that cut across disciplines. Looking at the world through the clienta€™s eyes makes it easier for social workers to provide services that empower clients while also being sensitive to clientsa€™ cultures and traditions. In the long term, social workers must also be willing to devise noninvasive ways to train Haitians to provide social work services for their own population, Lassiter says. After working for the Florida Department of Children and Families and teaching English as a Second Language courses in the Miami area, Atouriste returned to Haiti in 2004 to put his social work skills to use to help his country. He says the renewed attention on Haiti after the earthquake provides a valuable opportunity for social workers from all over the world to helpA  reform and standardize its bachelora€™slevel social work curriculum, develop graduate-level programs and put structures in place to promote social work research. Students should have more opportunities to do field placements with international organizations, and social workers who want to set up their own organizations need more ways to learn about the administration of organizations operating outside the United States. The social work profession must recognize and capitalize on the increasingly global nature of social problems and solutions or risk remaining unknown in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries, Atouriste says. But if you are such a social worker, there are several things you should consider before your trip. When Darin Toliver, MSW, traveled to Haiti in March, he found the scope of the devastation to be much larger than he expected. Take time to process your experiences, both during your trip and afterwards, and recognize whether you are becoming burnt out or overwhelmed. You can donate money, services, and items to organizations connected to the Haitian immigrant community. It applies thoughtful game design to promote real world objectives such as customer engagement, employee productivity, better learning, & health and wellness. In terms of research activities, it aims to serve as a leading institution for international studies on disparity.
Furthermore, the center will launch an international project on poverty with the Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality (SCSPI) in order to focus on disparity from the perspective of absolute poverty.

As part of his role, Rathish engages closely with corporations, non-profit organizations, social enterprises and the larger ecosystem in designing, implementing and scaling innovative businesses on the ground. He has successfully engaged with stakeholders and contributed towards strengthening brand reputation.
During his tenure he has sensitized more than 4 lakh students on the geriatric care and problems of the elderly.

Since 1997, he has worked with various Trade promotion organizations and has been closely associated in various capacities in Policy formulations of India’s Foreign Trade Policies.
She is responsible for giving direction, formulating policies and driving the CSR programmes for TCS nationally and globally. India and Country Director, International Center for Research on Women, India Office, New Delhi, India. At BSE he also headed Fixed Income and Interest Rate Derivative Segments and was instrumental in the launch of Interest Rate Derivatives and New Debt Segments.
Girish was also one of the earliest core team members which were involved in the set-up of National Stock Exchange (NSE). He has represented BSE in various sub groups formed by SEBI for market developments like E-IPO, Regulatory framework for Index Providers, Development of CBLO type products for Corporate Bonds, REITs and InVit etc.  He is also member of the Secretarial Standard Board (SSB) formed by the Institute of Company Secretary of India (ICSI). Trained as a journalist, he spent over a decade working for a cross-section of Indian media.

She provides inputs on potential acquisitions and new developments, critically analyses current operations and cascading them respectively. Vandana serves on the Board of Directors of The Akanksha Foundation, Akanksha Canada and Thermax Social Initiatives Foundation as well as the Advisory Board of the India School Leadership Institute, KINOE and STIR Education. Ravichandran has spent over 26 years in profit centre management, product development, marketing, training, market development, customer acquisition and relationship management in investment banking and related sectors before he transitioned into the development sector role at Narayana Health. In addition he is a member of multiple committees of CII, FICCI and is a part of the Global Compact Network of India.
He currently works for Rentokil-Initial as their Innovations Director and is passionate about supporting startups. He conceptualized and executed a unique Trade promotion platform to showcase the Indian engineering capabilities in North and South America.
Gopinath plays a significant role in supporting and supplementing the various activities of Oil & Gas business at Western Offshore Unit of ONGC which amounts for 70% of ONGC’s production. She has worked on a wide range of social programs for YES BANK, ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever and other Corporates in India.

Raj is the architect of Biz Gyan Tree, the business plan competition in the Yatra and credited with several other creative excesses. She pioneered numerous programs for inclusive growth in the areas education, health, financial inclusion, environment, youth leadership and capacity building of civil society. Shashank was also the CEO of a company he founded and led for 4 years and started his career at Schlumberger. She is energetic, dedicated leader and team player with the ability to motivate high levels of performance by others. His army background has inspired many processes and events to inculcate a sense of patriotism and integrity within the school program.
From 2000 to 2009, he worked as the President and Chief Information Officer of Reliance group and also acted as the CEO of the cricket team Mumbai Indians in its formative years. Chatterjee is helping to shape the contours of the subject of Corporate Affairs and preparing strategies for capacity development, knowledge dissemination and quality research. He works very closely with Gujarat & Goa Governments towards formulation of “State Policy for Older Persons”.
He has a Bachelor’s degree from IIT Bombay, MS from Purdue University and an MBA from Santa Clara University.
During this period he was involved in a number of successful Joint ventures and strategic partnerships with US based and India based corporations. A double postgraduate from Sri Venkateswara University, he has specialized in public administration, personnel management and political science.
Shashank chairs Jagriti Yatra, a National Entrepreneurship Development journey which takes 450 young potential entrepreneurs from smaller town and villages of our country for a 15 day, 8000 km journey in a special train. Chatterjee has acquired national and international renown as the foremost proponent of India’s path breaking legislative initiative in CSR. With a research experience of three years as Research Fellow of Andhra Pradesh State Archives, Mr. Under Shashank’s leadership, Jagriti is also incubating enterprises in Tier 2 & 3 districts as part of another initiative “Jagriti Enterprise Network”.
He has also addressed several forums at organisations such as AIMA, Delhi, the National CSR hub at Mumbai, Indian Oil Corporation, TISS Mumbai, THDC and SCOPE Conventions.
