In general though think about your body – so when you’re doing an exercise try to look at yourself in the mirror (yes, I know, as cringeworthy as that may seem). We all experience mood swings, its what we do to cope with them that can mean an absolutely awful day or one of happy moments despite the downer. This is about smiling just for the sake of smiling for at least a minute – this really does work, not only do you start of feeling silly, which makes you smile, your cheeks start to ache, which makes you smile and then if you do this with another person, it makes you smile. I love having a protein shake every day that is full of everything I need to stay healthy and strong given all the exercise I do – here is my favourite smoothie recipe. Sneak it in to your day by taking a walk rather than drive to the shops, climb the stairs rather than using the lift, do your usual classes but add some additional resistance, speed or duration to them, try something new on the time table at your local gym, ask a personal trainer for a focused gym based workout, buy a bike and cycle to work, walk the dogs the long route and don’t dawdle. There is a saying by Virginia Satir, a respected family therapist, “We need four hugs a day for survival. I’ve wrestled long and hard over whether to write this and whether to post these pics – because frankly I’m so embarrassed and humiliated by them that I’d already deleted some of the images – or so I thought.
Growing up I was never one of those naturally skinny girls – my weight fluctuated like any normal, moderately active teenager, I was short and a little on the dumpy side but not skinny and not fat either. In 2001 I started my PhD and started heading off to Indonesia each summer – for up to 6 months at a time. This pattern of weight gain and loss continued until I hit my mid-20s when suddenly the weight stopped dropping off so easily – I’d get back from Indonesia and  I’d lose half of the weight, but hang on to the other half. It wasn’t until I went on a work trip to Colorado in October 2010 and had this photo taken that I really realised I needed to do something. I returned from this trip, with the added bonus of a bout of gastroenteritis (which though I wouldn’t recommend – definitely gave me a kickstart in the right direction!) and signed up at my local gym, The Pavilion, with my (now) husband.  We signed up fully expecting to barely use it to be honest, and he vividly remembers me saying to him that “I’ll probably only use the pool, I doubt I’ll bother with anything else”… ha! Despite what I’d said I did try a familiar sounding class – aerobics, something I’d done before and a class from which I knew what to expect etc. So from October 2010 until January 2011 I went from not doing any exercise to doing to up to 10 classes or gym sessions a week.  I also signed up to “My fitness pal” and started tracking what I was eating. The weight started to drop – I lost the majority of the weight on my own and I was back down to close to 9 stone by January.
The weight had been dropping consistently but I’d got as far as I could go on my own – I’d hit a plateau. I headed off to Indonesia that year armed not only with knowledge but also some fantastic supplements from Colette that just helped me manage my weight gain – fat burners, omega 3’s (good fats), protein powder, vitamin C etc, and some targeted workouts that I could do in my tiny little shack. I thought I would share these stories just to show that despite our best intentions we very often struggle to reach our goals.
Mindfulness and awareness are the first steps toward overcoming the barriers we perceive to be holding us back. So if your weight-loss journey seems more like an uphill battle that never ends, despite being highly motivated, take some time and think about what barriers you might be holding on to.

I found them on an external hard drive recently, and have made the hard decision to show you guys. I set off to Uni at a pretty low weight for me after the stress of A-levels, but the processed food and copious amounts of alcohol meant I started to creep up the scales.  It wasn’t really a big issue – I was active, playing sports, stressing about work etc. Whilst there I’d inevitably put on up to a stone – I was living in a remote village, on a very high starchy carb diet of rice, fried noodles, fried sweet potato etc. At uni anywhere around 8 stone 7ish was “normal” and I knew my weight was about right if I could drop it back down to around there, then it became 9 stone, then 9 stone 3,  then I’d be “happy” if I could get my weight to stay around 9 stone 7.. The shock of seeing this photo spurred me on (I’m in the foreground – not the moose at the back!). I stood at the back, wearing my baggy shorts and big t-shirt, trying to hide as much as possible…… And I loved it! I’d looked at joining weight watchers again as knew I needed something to keep me on track, but now we were living over in Molesey I couldn’t go with mum and didn’t fancy it alone.
Also, although I was losing the weight and developing some muscle tone, I was still flabby. It opened my eyes to a different, sustainable way of eating that helped me to shift body fat and weight, without losing muscle and without relying on processed crud. Have you ever wondered why your trainer or class instructor was telling you to do a particular exercise? The intention is there, you mean to go every Tuesday night… but… somehow you never make it…well start by actually scheduling it in to your diary – write it down, block out the time and make it a priority – not something you can choose to do or not.
Again this is far easier in a PT scenario as if you start to zone out your trainer should notice and bring you back to the workout.

If it’s in a one on one session then this is even more important – remember that the PT session is YOUR time. Chances are that if you don’t like it there’s a good reason for it and it might be a reason I can fix!
We can probably modify things for you but we might also need to refer you to someone to check it out. Now if you’re doing a one on one you’ve got the trainer watching you but it never hurts to watch yourself too and see if what you think you’re doing translates to what you’re actually doing.

Luckily she was running one of her first weight loss programmes – the 7 day kick start, so in May 2011 I eagerly signed up. This was the first evolution of her plan and even though it was early days it was still a fundamental shift in thinking for me and made all the difference.  I cut out the caffeine, I reduced my meat and dairy intake (eventually realising I didn’t want to eat meat and dairy anymore at all), avoided starchy carbs etc but didn’t feel deprived in the slightest. It never stopped her doing what she wanted to do and she developed a persona that made her the life of the party.
More often than not the week would start off great but she would start to slip back into bad habits come Wednesday and then would be making excuses not to exercise.
We started our session with a weigh and measure and when her results weren’t good we had a chat about it.
I imagined wearing figure hugging clothes, looking in the mirror and feeling proud, being lighter and more energetic.
Gary then said to me that he was concerned that if he lost weight and was still rejected by the ladies he could no longer blame it on the fact that he was fat, but that he would realise something even worse in his mind and that is that he is simply not that exciting!
Jenny found it extremely difficult to cut back on the big meals and treats her friends and family had become accustomed to, and although losing weight felt like a really important goal, she couldn’t stand the thought of her family or guests feeling like they hadn’t had enough to eat. And if you don’t feel like you’re being listened to then find a new trainer, or another class! In addition to this “sweet spices” like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger have been shown to boost satiety and mimic sweetness, which allows you to cut back on sugar in nearly anything, from your morning cup of tea to the delight of homemade muffins. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs get you out of your circular thinking patterns and connect you with your heart and your feelings and your breath. I was never particularly happy with the way I looked though and felt extremely self-conscious if I ever had to dress up to go out (always breathing in all night to hold my stomach in!).
Snacks were all extremely high sugar, and although I spent some of my days trekking around the forest following monkeys, I spent a lot of my time either sat in farmer’s fields watching monkeys crop-raid, or visiting farmers and interviewing them (which  meant being fed cups of coffee sweetened with condensed milk and more deep fried, carb-loaded snacks – which would be rude to refuse).
I also connected with people I’d met at the gym through the app and we spurred each other on.
I started at the back – I still remember that first combat class, me and another new girl (who is now a close friend!), in our baggy gear, desperately trying to keep up and dodge wayward kicks and punches! Wanting to find a woman who he could have a relationship with he tried joining a couple of online dating sites and became convinced that women were turned off by his fat belly.
She was the one who bought the groceries and cooked the meals, so she recognised the need to change her habits at home.
She realised that although she was bright and fun loving this wouldn’t be enough as she was very self-conscious in meetings and would rather stay quiet than speak up and share her ideas.
In an effort to cheer her up, her mum would often take Alison out for an ice cream or down to the local sweet shop or bakery to pick up some treats. She learned to modify her favourite recipes to healthier ones by changing a few ingredients. There was absolutely no junk food in the house and groceries were purchased at the health food store only.
She always felt that she was being a little deceitful and sneaky doing this behind their backs but she didn’t care. I came to the realization that if this is going to happen in time for the wedding, I need help! I often hear people telling me they can’t make the evening classes at the gym as there isn’t time to get home, get changed, eat and get there after work. Don’t arrange things for that time if you can possibly help it – treat it like a work meeting that you can’t just skip. You’ve made the effort to get to the session – so try to put everything else out of your mind – the shopping can wait, that big deal at work isn’t going anywhere, the kids are being looked after (presumably!
I did venture to weight watchers at one point during this journey – I was staying with mum, in about 2007, and we both went together. It made me want to come to classes – not just to work out, but to see people and socialise. When I was in Indonesia during this time, I’d still slip, the deep fried carbs were impossible to avoid and their effects were ever present, and of course there were days I didn’t feel like exercising, but I found I had a new determination to try – no matter what (even without the use of equipment, and being out in the jungle!). I even ran the tough mudder race in 2013 with no extra training (that was partly because I misread and thought it was 5 miles not 20! It was only when her GP told her she needed to lose weight to control her high blood pressure and get her sugar levels under control that she started to look at her body and the extra weight she was carrying. Gary thought that if he could lose the excess weight, it would increase his chances of finding someone who would go out with him more than once. She decided that losing weight would help to increase her confidence and help to advance her career.
Having her mum’s undivided attention, when she was relaxed and full of fun were her favorite times. I get that – but if it’s a class you really want to do then the simple solution is to take your gym bag to work, have a high protein snack in it to eat on your way and head straight to the gym from work!
If there’s a booking system at your gym – book in, it will make you far more likely to attend. Is your butt in line with your shoulders etc etc It’s not vain to look at yourself – it’s sensible and will help you to become more body aware. Commuting meant I wasn’t building networks and a social life in Oxford, but neither was I building one in Surrey either – just my mum and my (now) husband. We did well, I lost about a stone, but as soon as I went back to Indonesia it went back on, and I crept right back up again. Other members and friends I chatted to started suggesting I try other classes – ones with scary names like bodycombat, and because other normal, not all super-fit,  members were recommending it I thought – well if they can do it so can I… and so I did! I kept coming back and then Colette encouraged me to try her BodyPump class too – another scary sounding class to someone new to all this stuff – what you want me to lift weights… to music.. Yes I was hitting my calorie goal, but I was cheating the system – I was still eating rubbish.
I do her beWELL bridal diet for 6 months, and now with my wedding less than a week away, I'm down 20 pounds! Engage with the class – that doesn’t mean you have to sing, shout or respond when the instructor tries to get the class to join in, but just be focused on the workout in whatever way works for you.
More often than not our bodies just don’t do quite what we think they are doing and it takes are while for muscle memory to develop, so help it along by keeping an eye on yourself.
My uni friends were spread all over the country and my long trips to Indonesia without phone or computer access meant I was losing touch with them.  I was still going to Indonesia for up to 6 months at a time, and for several years I was spending over 9 months a year over there. I knew I was heavy  –  I knew I was carrying too much weight and I felt wretched about it, but I didn’t really actively do much more about it. Now I’m not suggesting you have to cut out everything delicious and naughty to lose weight but I just wasn’t being sensible about my dietary choices. I find myself eating rubbish when no one is around, and telling myself I just don’t care.

Lots of this can be fixed with some simple cues or explanation from your instructor or trainer or we can modify it for you.
I was still self-conscious of my weight, hated being seen in a bikini and would never dream of wearing tight fitting clothes unless I had to!
And that’s the difference  – I’ve gone through all the yo-yo calorie counting and it just isn’t sustainable for me, these programmes are. Maybe part of the reason you don’t like it is because it’s uncomfortable – so it could be I need to give you a modification, or suggest some other exercises that you could do outside the class or session to improve your joint mobility for this exercise. I also know how rewarding it can be and I know there’s no one method to suit all – so here’s my weight loss journey for you, a mishmash of approaches, in all its fat, gory details.
But the scales were telling me I was back to my “normal” weight so that was what I went by. I was getting more and more miserable, my body image was appalling and I felt ashamed of the way I looked. I had an exercise bike, and when it wasn’t being used as a clothes horse, I’d do a 20 min peddle – usually whilst reading a book!  I half-heartedly tried to get in to a routine of going swimming a few times a week at my local pool.
I relied on sugary snacks and caffeine, and had a heavily dairy and meat-based diet, despite eating loads of fruit and veg too. But I was knackered from the commute and in the winter when it was cold and dark I just didn’t fancy it – plus getting in to a swimming costume when you’re feeling fat is never an easy thing.
It took a few sessions but pretty soon I was a complete Pump-addict and very quickly people were noticing the change in my body shape – I was starting to look really toned and the weight was starting to shift again. Trying to be ‘good' by counting calories or limiting breakfast to a juice or bar only backfires into overeating at lunch or caving at the candy bowl," she said. Well I can spend some time with you at the end of class or whenever and we can go through it together to help you get it right. I looked in to joining a local netball team (a sport I’ve always loved), but the ones I found trained at times I couldn’t make as I was working and so I did nothing.
Well I can give you something else to try first to build up to it…   Instructors are happy to do that – it only takes a few mins and if it makes you feel stronger and happier in class or your PT session then that’s brilliant! I don’t even have a photo of me in a bikini at my heaviest but this was taken in 2009 when I was creeping up to 10 stone.
