You'll want to do everything you can to protect your baby and make sure that they are born healthy.
We spoke to Sue Macdonald, midwife at the UK's Royal College of Midwives to ask her about the best diet during pregnancy. She told us that eating healthily while you are pregnant is good for many reasons - it is healthy for your baby, for your body and it means that you'll have a healthy eating pattern when your baby arrives.
Sue told us that you could write a whole book on this topic, but she gave us a little introduction to the foods that we should have more of when we are pregnant, the ones we should avoid, which vitamins are good to take and how many extra calories we really should be eating when pregnant.
Women are often encouraged to “eat for two” during pregnancy, but this shouldn’t be taken too literally. Surprisingly there is only a small increase in the amount of energy (calories) you need to eat while you are pregnant. As everyone has a varying metabolism and activity levels, you may find you need more energy or are still hungry. To maintain a healthy weight in pregnancy our Healthy Eating 7 Day Pregnancy Plan ranges between  1500 – 1785 calories a day and as a guide we would we recommend not going lower than 6500 kilojoules (1500 calories) per day. However, everyone has a different metabolism and you can calculate yours below to determine how many your body needs below so you can adjust your calorie intake accordingly. Our BMR calculator will give you your daily energy needs depending on how much exercise you do.
Please note that these are guides and you should listen to your body and if you need more snacks you should eat them and you should never starve yourself or go hungry if you are trying to lose weight. Recent research also found that sleeping on your left side may reduce the risk of stillbirth. Our Twins Tips will help you get the rest & relaxation you need for a happy and healthy multiple pregnancy. The vast majority of pregnant women experience discomfort during sleep but this problem is multiplied in twin and triplet pregnancies! The Harmony Duo Pregnancy Wedge is a multi-use pregnancy cushion providing support and comfort where you need it most.
If you're pregnant with twins, you will only need to take in about 600 more calories each day. In a multiple pregnancy it is particularly important to gain weight early, prior to the third trimester, as you may find early arrivals cut your pregnancy short!

Particularly during the first trimester, I just didn’t feel like standing on my feet, planning meals, chopping vegetables, baking anything, or cooking.
The great temptation there is, of course, to grab something bad for me out of a box or bag, or to eat out for dinner (or both!).
He said that I should just buy chicken breasts once a week, well-raised, and just not look at the cost. I often kept it super simple and just baked the chicken, perhaps with spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese or just herbed seasonings, served with a baked potato.
Particularly in the first trimester and early second trimester when we went grain-free, I was craving butter in massive quantities. I typically made an extra-large quantity of baked potatoes once a week using the restaurant-style baked potatoes instructions.
The Bradley Birth Method’s diet requires 2-3 baked potatoes per week, in part because of the iron content in the skin, if I remember correctly. The photo above is my Potato Crispies from Healthy Snacks to Go, a demonstration of what I do with potato skins when I have to peel the bakers for potato salad or something. Thaw some chicken stock, slice a few carrots and celery, toss in a bag of frozen, shredded chicken (from making the stock), and, perhaps with rice that you mustered up the energy to soak the night before with this method, you’ve made homemade soup. I also feel like this sausage, bean and kale soup with bagged organic spinach is a quick and easy option, since I only had to cut up one onion, one potato, and a few carrots. If you follow KS, you know that our family went grain-free for Lent (just gluten-free for the second half). Rather than try a bunch of new recipes for things that would remind us of and take the place of bread products, I just skipped the breads. Ultimately, I didn’t have to make bread or crackers or tortillas, so I had a lot less to do in the kitchen. I haven’t yet figured out how to be polite about our real food lifestyle this time around, though. I’ll work on that issue over the next few months and see what I come up with (maybe a free copy of The Everything Beans Book to anyone who brings me a meal, as long as the meal is from the book???). For now, I’m just thinking about some stockpiles I want to have when baby is born and hoping I’ll have room in the freezer after summer fruit picking! There are two goals here: (1) food I can prepare before baby that will wait in the freezer for after baby, and (2) food I can prepare while baby is napping that can be eaten without any preparation when baby is screaming. Once potato salad is made (and I always make a humongous bowl of it, in case you didn’t guess), I love the ease of it. I just made a triple batch of my soaked granola and my grain-free granola from Healthy Snacks to Go, completely filling my 9-tray dehydrator but making very few dishes otherwise. To plan ahead for this awesome and important assistance, I need to make sure I have plenty of ground beef and chicken breasts on hand. Please include a link to this carnival on your post so your readers can find even more ideas. I’d love to see more of you as we talk preparedness, pregnancy, and sweeteners this summer! So considering a woman's average calorie intake should be 2,000, you'd think that this means she should have 4,000 calories a day, but that's not true. If you decide to make that an extra chocolate bar a day it's going to be a lot harder to lose that weight post-pregnancy.

But there's one thing that really is worth thinking about and that's your diet during pregnancy. During the first trimester, a woman’s energy intake should remain roughly the same, so extra food is not required. The two detachable cushions and clever connector give you bump and back support and prevent you from rolling or use separately for customised support.
A quick pan-fry with fresh garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika and a side of simple potatoes and steamed veggies (or frozen peas) made an appearance a few times, too. Baked potatoes were the perfect food to always have on hand, and all it took was 10 minutes of scrubbing and a little pre-planning.
I could usually freeze a jar or two at the end of the meal, too, making another easy dinner later.
Far better to buy some bags of baby carrots and greens than to grab a pizza because you have nothing in the house to eat. It may seem like a huge dietary change would be difficult just when you’re feeling the most fatigued, but I mostly made it easy on myself. I have a feeling my husband will be doing a lot of grilling in August (my due date is the 8th), and he can make a great Dad’s Homemade Cheeseburger Helper. My husband created this very cool plug-in so you can leave an anecdotal description of your recipe to tempt folks to click over to you.

It’s a shopping list, price guide, money-saving tips and detailed prep lists all rolled into one. I know we had a lot of pasta and white flour dishes last time (delicious, but hubs gained some weight and triglycerides because of it). You can browse my many soup recipes here; I make soup at least once a week, so there are a lot of them! I bet baked potatoes will be a big feature in the rotation, as my butcher knife intimidates him and his left-handed poor cutting skills.
I just asked our local butcher (and now the farmer himself) to cut the meat off the bones and wrap them separately. It’s tricky to ask people to cook differently when they’re doing you a favor, you know? Can’t wait for Farmer’s Market season to pick up so the salads are even easier to come by!
The meat makes for a super easy meal, and the bones pop into the freezer until I have a quantity for homemade chicken stock.
