They're big because they're the oldest in elementary school and they've finally hit the double digits.  But they're little because they're still, well.
An ALA Best Book for Young Adults winner, this graphic novel series is action-packed, exciting, and suspenseful.
These books are quick reads packed with adventure, mystery, and fun, as Dan and Amy do what they can to solve the mystery of the Cahill family.
A favorite of many 10-year-olds, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are graphic novels that tell the story of Greg, a regular guy with a "regular" life. A 9-part series, the Bone cousins explore, protect, and defend life as they know it, fighting dragons, nasty weather, supernatural creatures, and more. The Babysitters Club of the mid '80s has received a new look and a whole new mini-series with the Friends Forever books.  There are dozens of books in this series, and kids love them. These books are flying off the shelves like hotcakes as they are released, because kids everywhere are devouring them. They answered the ad, "ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD looking for special opportunities?" Now follow Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance as they embark upon numerous challenges, tests, and adventures that test their smarts and strength.  Okay, so this is number eleven series, and I said I was only sharing the top ten. Fairy tales come alive when Alex and Conner (brother and sister) find themselves in the fairy tale book given to them by their grandmother. Young and brave Creel wants nothing more than to own her own seamstress shop but in her pursuit of this dream, she encounters and befriends a few dragons which will change the course of her life.
Crenshaw is the new book from the author of The One and Only Ivan, Katherine Applegate, and it’s another amazing story dealing with poverty. Molly’s recruited to hunt zombies in New York City, just like her mother, who is dead. Princess Adela tags along with her gardener friend, Garth, to an invite-only garden party given by the infamous, reclusive Lady Hortensia. This series has about a billion books so if your kids like it, they’ll be reading and reading and reading.
It’s a typical southern summer in Alabama 1969 and Delphine and her two sisters are visiting their extended family. Saige (besides being the American Girl Doll of 2013) lives in the balloon capitol of America – Albuquerque,New Mexico. We read this dragon book twice for a bedtime story in addition to the subsequent books in the series including the newly published FOURTH book, Talking To Dragons! Rapunzel is happy living in her castle with everything she needs since Witch takes good care of her.
Neil’s Aunt Kate, based on a real historical figure, works as the first female detective for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Their father sang Grace and Connor a sea shanty about vampirates but to find out that they were real? The second book in the Ever After High series, we’re seeing the results of Raven decided to choose her own story and ending. Honestly, I could care less about chickens — unless they have magic — which the chickens in this story do!! Coke and Pepsi McDonald didn’t want to jump off a cliff. They didn’t want to get hit by poisoned darts from blowguns either.
My 10-year old found this book SO RELATABLE — just like she struggles with confidence and speaking up, so does the main character, Peppi. An interesting middle grade novel about boy and girl twins who discover that crazy weather might be controlled by one of them — and that an evil Storm Maker might be trying to control the pair.
A fantasy story set in Arribithia, somewhere in the historical times of sultans and dijinns and magic, we meet 13-year old Zardi and her best friend, Ridhan who must seek Captain Sinbad and his ship in order to save Zardi’s sister from the evil sultan. This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel.
Horten’s magician great-uncle Tony, whom he just learns about, disappeared mysteriously years ago. Izzy’s life was a series of houses, sadness and secrets – why wouldn’t her mom tell her about her dad who died before she was born? The wisdom mixed with grief mixed with love creates a beautiful story — I cried and celebrated.

Although this book is from last summer, I just recently read it to see if I would like the series. In this list, Pragmatic Mom has arranged Newberry award-winning books by grade appropriateness. In this post from Afterschool for Smartypants, you’ll find fiction, nonfiction, and poetry recommendations.
This series of nonfiction books was very popular in my classroom of third, fourth, and fifth graders. Rowling about the brave, young wizard Harry Potter, then the seven-part Harry Potter book series that must be conquered! The clues lead them to the Clarksville City Zoo and its’ secret entrances. Highly recommended series of  books!
It’s a fun historical fiction adventure (and mystery) about a young boy named Lucius whose father is accused of a crime.
Daily life means minding their grandmother, Big Ma, a crotchety matriarch, getting extra loving from their much sweeter great-grandma, Ma Charles, hanging out with neighbor, JimmyTrotter, and working at the tricky business of growing up. She loves horses and art, and is fortunate to have a grandmother who is a professional artist and who owns her own horses, a special breed, Spanish Barbs. It’s not as scary as it sounds, but is more of an adventure with monsters which happens to include zombies.
This is about a strong female princess named Cimorene who doesn’t want to be a princess rescued and married off. But her life gets totally confusing and complicated when she follows Jack to the ground, meets fairies who hate Witch, and visits the Woodmother in order to save her own life. Dess is a surviver who is reunited with her baby brother in his long term foster home which Dess helped him get after she called social services on her mother. One such changling, Bartholomew and his sister, Hettie, are supposed to say hidden, away from danger. She has no interest in letting newly orphaned Neil stay with her so Neil determines to become invaluable to Kate. He meets and befriends a Make-a-Wish Girl named Annie, who is also escaping her daily reality of a (stupid) art camp and a cancer treatment she doesn’t want.
When the circus travels to the seaside home of a Maharaja, Lizzie’s visions help her figure out who stole from him and if the Ghost Ship is real. When shipwrecked, the siblings were each rescued — one by pirates and one by vampirates.
The force inside Erec commands him to find her, leading him on an adventure that will change him forever. Cheeseman, his three relatively odor-free children, a psychic hairless dog, and a sock puppet named Steve are on the run.
And they certainly don’t want to get locked in their burning school, thrown into a pit at the top of a sand dune, or drowned in a vat of liquified SPAM. This well-done graphic novel tackles the issues of friendships and confidence, among other things. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel’s sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. Horten and one of the triplet neighbors must piece together the clues left behind before his uncle’s house is destroyed by the city.
Why did they always move? When Izzy’s mom unexpectedly sends Izzy to her Nana’s in New Mexico, whom she barely knows, Izzy lands in a new culture and discovers her past, present and future.
After having lost their home and living in their van for 3 months, the family is now about to lose their apartment. This is fictional but is inspired by the true story of American folk artist James Hampton whose work is in the Smithsonian. This story resonates emotionally and would make for a great bedtime or class read aloud. When the family loses everything, the oldest brother decides to be a gladiator — which is equivalent to slave status and a good way to die young. Plus, I’m so happy to see that Norse mythology is growing in popularity with writers.

Adela will need help to escape and free the other imprisoned guests — help that comes from a talking crow.
To start off, two orphan siblings named Amy and Dan, are told in their grandma’s will that they belong to the very famous and powerful Cahill family which has several different branches. No matter what happens, a Vonetta-stealing tornado included, this is a strong family that loves each other and God with all they’ve got. Saige faces challenges to overcome with not just friends and family but also with trying to convince her school to bring back art classes. The foster family loves on both kids but their biological daughter Hope struggles between jealousy and compassion for her new sibling. Yet, when Bartholomew is seen by the lady who kidnaps his neighbor, he’s thrust into a dangerous mystery that he must solve in order to save the other children before they are kidnapped, too.
To avoid the unwanted surgery, the pair run away to the magical valley they know will protect them. Each becomes attached to their new ship and crew which will eventually pit the twins against each other in a bloody war of the high seas. He now lives with the Gentlemen who rescued he and his best friend, Clarissa, from the circus and the crazed Londoners who believed him to be a dangerous murderer. And they’ve moved into an apartment so tiny that Erec sleeps with the washing machine. When he arrives in Alypium, a hidden world where old knowledge of magic is kept, Erec learns that his mother and the entire kingdom are in peril. The book is written as letters from a girl named Sophie, who is newly living at the farm of her dead great-uncle Jim. But what are you supposed to do when you’re being chased across the country by your insane health teacher and two guys in bowler hats who are trying to kill you?
So the gist is that a group of dragonets leave their protectors safety and are captured by a dragon faction. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel’s owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures.
He’s facing a deadline and also another scheming magician who wants to find the hidden secrets in Tony’s lost workshop. Just as Izzy learns to make tortillas with practice and patience, she also learns the story of her dad, her mom, and ultimately her own story. Chickens because her mom has made the family move to the country to raise organic chickens.
He convinces the Undertakers group to stop being defensive but to be more aggressive and determine how to kill the corpses.
The books always are about a young boy trying to survive the historically important, life-changing event. The Queen of England ask Wild Boy to solve the mystery of a most frightening terror that scares people to death — again, seemingly literally. She writes to her dead abuelita, her dead great-uncle Jim, and Agnes of the Extraordinary Chickens catalog.
The dragonets might just be the long-awaited dragonets of the prophesy that will end the dragon wars for good.
The characters are realistic with dysfunctional family dynamics, an important friendship, despair, and hope — it hooked me from the first page.
GREAT for reluctant readers since these are more easy to read than the other books on this list.
Fate is about to change all these bears lives forever, setting their paws on a path toward a future they cannot yet imagine . Now they’re being chased by international super spies, top secret government agents, and a genius monkey. Specifically the chickens — starting with the first one she discovers wandering around.
