Literature: Courses designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Historical Studies: Courses that provide insight into the development of human institutions, their similarities and differences, and the means by which knowledge about the past is acquired. The Fine Arts: Courses that highlight the ways in which art is a major defining aspect of culture, as well as on how art reflects the lands and times in which we live.
Effecitve as of the Spring term 2013,  all Written Communication courses will require at least three (3) visits to the Writing Center.  All basic science and mathematics courses will require students to utilize a tutor or engage in Supplemental Instruction whenever they score below 70% on two consecutive quizzes or exams. At all times, there are particular concepts, themes and ideas that raise concern and debate within society. These themes are often particular to the times, but how they are reconciled may have long-term implications for individuals and humankind alike. Civic Engagement: Facilitates the development of knowledge, skills and values needed to be effective active citizens.
Liberal Learning Seminars (LLS) are designed to bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on a regular basis. These seminars place a strong emphasis on critical inquiry, reading, frequent writing, collaborative learning, and other skills that develop students’ intellectual and practical competencies. The Bachelors of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of Michigan involves completing 128 credit hours of courses in various categories, which include: College of Engineering (CoE) core, intellectual breadth, ME program specific courses, and general electives. Courses focusing on the Seven Learning Outcomes must also be factored into students’ choices. At least two of the courses must be writing intensive (Written Communication). This may include understanding the responsibility to improve community conditions, build healthier communities and address social problems. LLS bring students and faculty together in a shared process of inquiry around a broad, sometimes interdisciplinary topic or question. Freshmen and transfer students with less than 30 hrs.

To assist students to gain a greater scope of diverse knowledge and to facilitate creativity, the College of Engineering (CoE) requires that students, who have matriculated into the CoE for the Fall 2011 term or later, complete the Intellectual Breadth requirement.


Any course on the approved list from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts (LSA) falls into the Liberal Arts Course (LAC) category.
In total, there are 45 credits of required ME Core courses; and together these subjects represent the fundamental technical competencies every mechanical engineering student must learn. The chart below outlines the courses from each of the core areas:  Specialization Elective (SE)All ME students are required to complete 3 credits of Specialization Elective. A Specialization Elective is any course intended to allow students to explore deeply any dimension of intellectual endeavor that they elect, in both technical (including engineering) and non-technical fields across the University. A Specialization Elective is any 3 credit hour course that meets the requirement of either 1) have a 300-level+ prerequisite or 2) be any 300-level+ ME course. If the course does not have a 300-level+ prerequisite, then pre-approval must be granted via a petition to the Associate Undergraduate Chair. It is the intent of the advanced Technical Elective requirement that students take a number of "Core Technical Electives" to develop a deeper technical knowledge in specific areas of mechanical engineering.Students who follow the guidelines given below need no further approval for their Technical Electives. Students who are interested in the Electrical Engineering Minor should contact the EE Department for more information.General Electives (GEs)As part of the ME BSE degree, 119 required credits come from the CoE Core, Intellectual Breadth, and ME Program Specific categories.
General Elective credits are the remaining credits needed to reach the minimum 128 total credits toward program required for graduation, which usually amounts to 9 to 12 credits of GEs.For transfer students, students that received credit by exam, or students that transferred one or more courses from another institution, your total number of credits from the other categories may not equal 119 credits. 100, 101, 151)For all of these math, science, and engineering courses taken at UM Ann Arbor the student must have earned a grade of C or better. Overrides to ME courses may be requested when a class is full due to special circumstances. The advising team has access to your schedule, so please be accurate and detailed in your request.ME can only provide overrides for ME classes. Please contact the department that offers the course and ask them about their override policies.Please note that an override is not automatic. While we do our best to accommodate your request, it is important to understand that overrides are reserved for those students with a valid time conflict that may delay their graduation or other special situations.Due to the demand, we unfortunately cannot provide course overrides due to personal preferences. Please understand that it does take time to process an override as the advisors will first seek to find alternative schedules for each student to ensure timely graduation and resolve other issues with placing a student in a class, such as the fire code limitations of how many students can safely be allowed to be within each classroom.Please note that it may be necessary to wait until the first week of classes (which should be attended) for seats to potentially open in a class due to other students dropping the course.

As a result, it is useful to start the planning process by placing these courses first, and then filling in the rest of your degree plan by following the prerequisites and co-requisites.Most students are eligible to declare ME at the start of their sophomore year. For a student following a traditional four-year college plan, this leaves six semesters to complete the ME curriculum. This can be useful if a specific course will not fit into your schedule, or if you wish to maintain a lighter course load during the academic year. While this is entirely achievable, an increasing number of our students prolong their degree a semester or two to pursue such things as study abroad or co-ops, both of which we highly encourage. Each student's personal goals and interests will be different, so keep this in mind when planning your schedule.Prerequisites and Co-requisitesWithin the ME degree there are numerous prerequisites and co-requisites that every student must follow when enrolling for courses.
Each row in the diagram represents a sample term within an eight term (four year) degree, and is laid out to show when a student might take each course to satisfy the prerequisites and co-requisites for the ME degree.
Although the sample schedules detailed here would satisfy all requirements in the appropriate sequence, they are only a few of the many possible schedules that would work, depending on a student's individual circumstances.
