In addition to making sure you have the right timing for planting, make sure you pick the right spot to put peppers.
Squish the sides of the pots to loosen the soil and gently pull up on the plant by the base of the stem to remove it from the pot. JonnaJune 13, 2013 at 8:43 PMI just planted a chocolate pepper (red brown color) and a Yellow one. One of the important considerations in growing successful vegetable gardens is being able to select the right location in the backyard. Several vegetable gardening tips have to be regarded before one could engage into planting. I have always believed that a thriving & productive vegetable garden really starts during the previous fall when we put our gardens to bed. I start in the spring with an actual garden plan so I know what is going into my garden and where. By rotating your crops you have a better chance of protecting them from blights and diseases that tend to winter over from year to year. Also after the soil has warmed up be sure to start mulching your vegetable beds with grass clippings, shredded leaves or compost. This year I will be planting a large salad garden and I thought it would be fun to grow my lettuce and other greens in wood pallets to change things up a bit in the backyard. All you really need to do a little pallet gardening is a wood pallet, some good soil, and a few seeds. If you live in the Tacoma area you can purchase new pallets from Girard Wood Products in Puyallup, Washington for about $9 each.
Because you can never be sure chemicals were stored on an old pallet, or that there is some sort of bacteria lurking inside the recycled pallets, I would scrub the wood down with some bleach and soapy water and let it dry out before using it to plant anything. No two gardens will ever been the same, or have the same growing conditions, but the desire to try new things is something we all have in common. Looking for a little more inspiration?A  Small Space Container Gardening by Fern Richardson is a great place to start.A  Amazon currently has Small-Space Container GardensA in stock and ready to ship. Probably not a good idea for tomatoes, but definitely good for smaller vegetables like the peppers and cucumbers.
I had my husband staple the landscape fabric on the bottom and sides to prevent the dirt from falling out. My rabbits (owned just 1 at a time) came inside but also had a warm house ourdoors on the porch. I am an experienced gardener (40+ yrs) and decided to plant two pallets last spring as a trial.
I think it might work for fast turn around things like lettuce and radishes, but not for long term things like beans, peppers, tomatoes or cabbages.
Well Mari, I was thinking that (you need to pack the soil, some, esp under the top slats,) as I looked at the pics.
This is my first year having a true garden, and so far I’m loving the time I get outside playing in the dirt and absorbing the sunshine. Whether you like to get your hands dirty in the garden or not, it’s nice to have a few gardening tips and ideas up your sleeve. I’ve looked high and low, explored the web, and have had lots of fun compiling and creating lists of stuff that I want to learn more about and share with you! If the plant has been in the pot for a long time, you'll see white roots wrapping around the edges.

If you are watering mid-day, ESPECIALLY if it is sunny, it's important to not drench the leaves or they will get sunburnt and unhappy. I want to help you make healthier choices for your family that are both BEAUTIFUL & DELICIOUS! One of these is looking for the right spot where the vegetables could get plenty of sunshine in order to thrive. That includes cleaning all of the waste in your garden and being sure to pick up and or rake out any residual spoiled vegetables that are laying on the ground.
I also keep my plans from year to year so I can rotate my crops in the garden…this is important. The hybrids vegetable plants that we grow at Winterberry are bred to be more vibrant, more vigorous, more productive and more disease resistant than standard varieties. So keep your garden clean, mulched, watered and well fed. Using a wood pallet to start a garden can be a great space saver, plus as a bonus, there is no soil to til or weed. I believe they do a bit as hydroponicists do, and prune to 1-2-3 or 4 leaders, and train vertically.
I have two pallets this year and put my herbs, onions and a few peppers to see how they do. I had 2 rabbits and after they grew a little, I put them in a pen with a rabbit hutch and that still wasn’t good enough they chewed their way out of the fence. I was just thinking last night about wanting to move my strawberries to a new idea, and thinking the original regular bed I was doing to move them to won’t be great. Slats keep strawberries off the soil but do limit soil access, IF you wanted to follow Sq Ft’s v dense planting of lettuce.
I had to run outside yesterday to make sure that the chemicals my neighbor was spraying didn’t accidentally land on my herb garden. Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for your yard that I hadn’t heard of before.
Be especially sure to remove anything that will be below the ground or will be touching the ground once the plant is in the hole. Use a watering can or a hose wand that distributes a soft stream of water and water at the base of the plant. How long this takes will very by climate but in the Portland area, that's once every 2-3 days in spring and early summer.
Please note that posts more than 10 days old have comment modification turned on so if you don't see your comment right away don't panic! Being able to know what kind of vegetables to plant is also necessary since some types tend to require large spaces to grow.
Especially tomatoes…because tomato blights from rotten tomatoes left in the garden will winter over and infect your new plantings for the upcoming season. It will help keep the moisture content uniform in your soil and keep your vegetables from stressing out.
This is exactly the kind of project young children would love, especially if they could have their own wood pallet to work with.
The photo you see above is a picture of some recycled wood pallets we found behindA buildings last year.
Everybody has an opinion, and their own way of doing things and I think that’s the best part.

I’d see the just about daily running through the yard to get the food that I put out for them and then they stopped coming altogether, guessing that they went off and made a family life of their own. I thought they were all pretty clever, but then again, I’m still a rookie at this soil and seed stuff! It also helps prevent blossom end rot - a plant disorder that causes large, inedible black spots on mature fruit.
Also be sure to keep your weeds down throughout the growing season because most veggies don’t like competition while growing.
Next on the agenda is getting the area mulched so it looks a little more put together and like it belongs in aA suburbanA backyard. And a board below will remove too much access to the soil, for tomatoes and most squash or melons; so yes, remove some lumber below. But the last time the cat went in after the rabbit, the cat didn’t chase the rabbit out, but visa-versa. I did get a few strawberries, but the rest curled up and died and the beans grew well initially, but turned yellow and died at the flowering stage. I’m wondering if putting them right on dirt would allow the roots to keep growing as much as needed.
I don’t want to win the prize for the largest squash (not there yet), but I do want a enough juicy tomatoes to last all summer long. The latter helps in the successful growth of vegetables through the excess water it tends to drain and the warmer soil it provides, while the former contributes by reducing the weeds that weaken and kill the plants.Vegetable Garden Planning - Tips to ConsiderIn order to prevent possible problems during the growing season, vegetable garden planning has to be done prior to planting. I have decided they are not worth using and have changed to raised gardens the same size and and getting so much more produce in the same area.. This task generally involves proper site selection where accessibility and water availability is of prime consideration. Should I be digging the dirt under them to loosen the dirt, maybe add some compost, then put my pellets down and fill with dirt? Aside from that, crop selection and the garden layout also have to be deliberated during vegetable garden planning. I’ve also seen them with a square box frame under them with the pellets on top which gives you more depth. I have four blueberry bushes on that fence and he is always out there spraying- not a single weed in his yard.
The latter takes into account the family’s general preference with consideration to how they’ll use the vegetables, while the former is focused onto deciding how large the garden area has to be. This usually involves taking a look around the location, determining shaded spots, as well as identifying the sun’s movement in order to gain optimal gardening results.Vegetable Garden Ideas - Layout DesignsSome of the basic vegetable garden ideas that help complete the area’s layout design is the incorporation of rows and blocks. Planting in straight rows normally involves placing stakes at each of the garden’s end, running a string along it for row definition, and then planning a path between every row that has been created. Blocks, on the other hand, are close rows that help gardens produce more in less area by eliminating the lanes between the rows. The other effective vegetable garden ideas include planting in containers especially for limited green spaces.
