The wire EDM process is best used to cut small, intricate delineations, holes, and shapes in electrically conducive materials. Wire EDM is traditionally used to cut very hard metals such as titanium, steel and hastelloy, but Caltrona€™s CNC-controlled wire EDM machines can quickly and accurately cut all materials that conduct electricity, both hard and soft. CNC wire cut EDM machine puts impulse voltage between electrode wire and workpiece through impulse source, controlled by servo system, to get a certain gap, and realize impulse discharging in the working liquid between electrode wire and workpiece.
Electrode wire is connecting to cathode of impulse power source, and workpiece is connecting to anode of impulse power source. The gap between electrode wire and workpiece should be certainly maintained in a required range. The procedure should happen in the liquid with insulate capacity, for example saponification and deionized water, the liquid could act as medium of discharging channel and provide cooling and flushing. In Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDMing), or Wire-Cut EDM, a thin single-strand metal wire is fed through the work piece, typically occurring while in a submerged tank of dielectric fluid or deionized water.


This process is used to cut plates and to make punches, tools, and dies from any conductive material, including hard metals that are too difficult to machine with other methods, such as; metal allows, graphite, carbide and diamond. If gap is too big, insulating liquid can’t be break through,, and there will be no spark discharging; if gap is too small, short circuit is easy to happen, no spark discharging neither. The guides move in the (X-Y) plane controlled by a CNC, the upper guide can also move independently in the (Z-U-V) axis, giving rise to the ability to cut tapered and transitioning shapes and can control axes movements. This new function ensures a higher success rate in threading wire through a hole on a submerged workpiece or a small diameter hole. The function consists of three parts, high angle guides, compensation jig and specialized software. This gives the Wire-Cut EDM the ability to be programmed to cut very intricate and delicate shapes. There is little change in the mechanical properties of a material in Wire EDMing due to its low residual stresses.
