With words by Ed Sheeran and illustrations by his childhood friend, artist Phillip Butah (who produces artwork for Sheeran’s albums and singles), and accompanying photos, Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey is an exclusive, fully authorised, first-person account by Ed of how he became an internationally renowned singer-songwriter. In the book, Ed explores his early musical experiences and influences as well as his time recording and touring, right up to the release of his second album, ‘x’. The book reveals what drives and inspires Ed as he continues to evolve as an artist, while coping with stratospheric success, and is an honest account of what it takes to make it in the music business. With Phillip Butah’s distinctive portraits of Ed throughout, this is a unique book celebrating a unique musician.
Since he was a teenager, he has used himself as a model and sketched his own face from different angles and in different lights and colours.
Running PressOn the cover of "A Visual Journey" is a baggy-pantsed Ed, tattoos running down his arm.
Butah, a professional portraitist -- Prince Charles commissioned him for portraits, for which he spent six months at the royal's house -- has drawn Ed multiple times, telling me it gets a little easier with each portrait. There's a section at the back of the book that features Butah's other work and shows his portraits of other people.
A couple of days ago, Ed Sheeran and Phillip Butah’s book was released and delivered through my door, I couldn’t have been more excited!
At the beginning of the book, Ed explains how he has always wanted to explore a project like this, but never thought it was the right time. The book is an insight into both of the artists’ lives and how they have made it to where they are today.

Overall, ‘Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey’ really expresses how truly talented both Ed Sheeran and Phillip Butah are and that you won’t achieve anything unless you have the right determination and focus on your dream.
ConfidentialityAll information submitted to us will remain secret and we will not tell anyone else about what you’ve said to us. This encouraged him to take up art seriously, and he went on to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He is fascinated by the subtleties of the art of portraiture – especially how slight changes in the angle of a head, or in the use of a particular line, colour or texture, can affect the mood of a picture. A bright, neon-green color soaks the cover of the book, which Butah admits was almost the album art for Sheeran's sophomore LP, X.
But as other people commission him to draw, his collaboration with Sheeran came organically.
The bright green book has one of Phillip’s drawings of the ginger singer-songwriter on the front, which gives a simple explanation of the book. He believes that autobiographies are for people who have really lived their lives and as Ed is only 23, he thinks it is too early for a full autobiography, so this was the perfect alternative. It includes a lot of family photos from Ed and his parents, John and Imogen, and a lot of Butah’s favourite pieces of work. We always keep contact with Teenwise confidential, this includes Emails, Telephone calls and Facebook Messages.

Phillip Butah is an outstanding draughtsman whose skills are particularly suited to portraiture.
So he often produces several drawings of a person to reflect different aspects of their character.
Butah, whose portrait of Ed graced the cover of the singer's + album, provided the artwork for this project -- nearly 50 images drawn with pencil, pastels, charcoal and graphite. Butah's pencil drawing shows the musician as the simplest version of himself -- alone, just like he is onstage at an arena, and just like how he once was playing clubs by himself, trying to make it big. Ed and Phillip have known each other from a very young age and have worked together through both of their careers. Ed talks about his experiences of sofa surfing, playing around 2 or 3 gigs a night just to get his name out there and the artists that have influenced him in his journey. Apart from the accuracy and detail of visual appearance, Phillip’s drawings also capture the character and personality of the person in front of him. Butah shows us how his work has progressed, who inspired him artistically and how much fun it’s been working on the artwork for Ed’s album ‘X’.
