The purpose of our program us to offer post secondary students the opportunity to earn a college degree, work in their chosen field, and live a productive, independent, and successful life. Our program is enhanced by a unique association with Arizona State University West and Scottsdale Community College. Learning to ride the elevator independently is a skill that must be practiced by our special needs teens and young adults. Given a business card or written direction indicating the location of an office within a building, STUDENT will be able to locate the floor and office number by using the elevator or walking, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR. Given scenarios of ways to find a particular location (office, store) in the community, STUDENT will point to or say where each location is and how to get there using business cards or directions, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
Following the success of the trail blazing specialist learning skills centre for young people aged 16 up to 25 with learning or support needs that opened in Aylesbury in 2011, a larger state of the art specialist vocation education facility opened at the Flackwell Heath Campus of Amersham and Wycombe College on Wednesday, May 25th.
This facility is one of the first in the UK as it focusses on vocation and employment as well as living more independently and academic studies, thus it offers greater opportunities for those young people with communication difficulties including hearing impairment. Helen Backus from Buckinghamshire County Council, who has been responsible for getting this project off the ground, attended, along with Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council Cllr Bill Chapple, Cllr’s Noel Brown and Mike Appleyard, some families, students and other professionals. How successful do you think a person like that will be in getting into college or securing that job? This is the challenge that a number of high functioning autistic teenagers face – they are extraordinarily intelligent but they are impeded in their attempts to lead an independent and fulfilling life. With the help of former pro-football player Larry Harris, now a professional opera singer, Dr. Following a systematic approach Dunn and Harris’s clients are first taught the skills involved with producing a sound e.g. Singers alter the sound they produce using their vocal cords, their mouth and tongue, lungs and diaphragm.
Harris describes the hesitation technique he uses to help kids avoid repeating themselves or using words that have no meaning like ‘um, um, um’ that would be distracting to the listener, like this: “Say you want to pick up a table that is fixed to the ground. At first kids are encouraged simply to make the sound in its raw form until they begin to understand that the sound cues them to understand they are about to pause.

Dunn met Harris at their church choir in Scarsdale and over the last six years—and something clicked. We use a positive behavior approach to assist participating students to meet their individual goals.
Promoting independence as our kids begin jobs, attend doctor's visits, or handle appointments, is key to their success.
Their lack of effective communication skills inhibits their social integration and is a barrier to vocational acceptance. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 1 in 68 children suffer from autism and this population is aging fast. Over the next decade, approximately 500,000 adolescents with autism will transition into adulthood with minimal support systems in place. Dunn and Harris, an ex-NFL player for the Houston Oilers and a professional baritone who has performed a variety of roles from La Traviata to Aida in venues all over the world, take. First they learn the sorts of motor skills needed and then they repeat the action to develop muscle memory and master the movement until it becomes organic,” he says. The placement of the tongue, the shape of the mouth, the use of the chest cavity, the resonating of the nose cavity and other techniques result in creating different sounds.
As a speech-language pathologist who works with the school aged population, I am extremely interested in the manual you are publishing. We bridge the gap from academic struggles to success in high school, college, and entrepreneurship by instilling and rebuilding students through tutoring, workshops, mentoring, & youth events. Social, communication, academic, leisure and personal living skills are assessed through individualized planning. Students participate in a broad variety of campus organizations, clubs, social events, tutoring, and Student Work Program.
This "hands-on" activity allows students to practice skills used in this type of situation - riding the elevator. The pair has collaborated on a novel project to help autistic young adults improve their speech prosody using opera singing techniques.

It is estimated that roughly 50,000 children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) turn 18 each year. Not only do we need to think about housing supports for adults with autism, but we also need to work with large and small businesses to capitalize on the strengths of individuals with autism,” says Steffanie Marchese, senior director of international science and media at the non-profit, Autism Speaks, a leading autism science and advocacy organization. Dunn and Harris believe that higher-functioning teens on the autism spectrum can and must acquire and understand voice skills in order to communicate.
That sensation and the pause gives these kids a second to hang onto to avoid repeats At the end of the line the patient learns how to respond spontaneously and respond normally in the real world,” Harris says. But we have not been successful at remediating that residual monotone, flat prosody effect that still makes individuals at the high end of the autism spectrum sound different.
Next up: a soon-to-be released manual on techniques to improve prosody among high-functioning autistic teenagers this year. We utilize the learning strengths, abilities and interests of each student to establish their individualized plan. Copying for more than one teacher, classroom, department, school, or school system is prohibited.
You have the answers but when you speak, your voice is flat, you sound like a machine — a staccato tone, devoid of intonations or variance in pitch. According to the American Pediatric Association, more than 50 percent of youth with an ASD are not employed or do not participate in postsecondary-education. They intend to use the proceeds from the sale of the manual and to raise money from grants to further their research and gather a larger body of objective data for scientific studies.
