Thirty years ago, most of the cars used carburetors, and only a few people believed that electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a real threat. Nowadays, even NASA admits that EMP is one of those events we could not recover from: it would stop all infrastructures that sustain modern society which rely so much on electronics.
I have been doing the survival thing for some time and I see precious few absolutes when it comes to survival and a whole lot of gray area. Considering this, I will take a poke at answering some questions about EMP and how it would affect automobiles, which were asked by our readers after our recent article that described some top picks for ideal bugout vehicles. A large and strong enough EMP could stop the extraction, refinement, distribution and sale of fossil fuels. By the time you pile in what will surely be everything you own in this world, your spouse, your 2.4 kids, grandma and the golden retriever, you may be looking for ways to increase your vehicle’s carrying capacity.
Features such as 4-wheel drive, a full size spare, plenty of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, lockers, extraction or trail gear, towing points, winch and off road lighting will come in handy post-EMP because roads will no longer be maintained, disabled vehicles and vehicles that have run out of fuel will litter the roadway. An expensive custom vehicle might look cool online or be fun to daydream about, but after a HEMP, the first time it needs a part, you might wish you bought something a little more pedestrian (no pun intended). Some newer vehicles have in excess of 100 processors that run on miniscule amounts of power. How far are you going to get without an engine, fuel injection, transmission or 4-wheel drive system?
For the best EMP-resistance, choose a vehicle with conductive metal body enclosing the engine and passenger compartment or cab over a vehicle with body panels made of fiberglass, plastic or any other non-conductive material. If your vehicle already has these features or you are already doing these things, then you are already part of the way there. No matter which automobile you choose, there is always more that can be done to minimize the effect of HEMP on the vehicle. Rewire with shielded wiring: Verify that your wiring is shielded or replace all you can with shielded wiring.
Re-bond metal body panels: Remove body panels and make sure that you have good conductive bonds between body panels by removing paint and installing conductive gasket material or make sure you have metal on metal contact with as much overlap as possible. Protect cable entry and exit points with surge suppression: This will need to be fast-clamping surge protection faster than one millisecond that will handle high voltages. Keep spares of vulnerable parts you cannot replace in a Faraday cage: You may have a vehicle that is mostly good to go, but it still parts like a starter, alternator and voltage regulator that do not contain microelectronics, but could still conceivably be affected.
Manual transmission: Some will surely disagree with me on this one, but they are easier to repair and make it possible to push start vehicles even if the battery is shot or missing. You will have to do a little research on specific models to figure out what year the manufacturer started installing EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) and so forth because I am supposed to be writing an article or two as opposed to a book here, but the topic is certainly worthy of a book. The simpler the motor the better, but with larger motors, long wheel travel and skid braking, they will go faster than I want to go, that is for sure.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge, these older US-made trucks are very common and are great candidates for a low profile bug out vehicles that double as daily drivers.
There are even some shops that will fix them up for you if you are not particularly mechanically inclined. Large diesel rigs like Unimogs and Deuce and a half’s are sometimes outfitted with marine diesel appliances and solar power and can even be fitted with a wind generator. Maybe your bugout plan does not involve a blue water voyage, but it does involve running a stretch of river, lake or crossing a body of water.
A couple recently rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, but I would not recommend it and I am sure they would not either. But if your route involves crossing a smaller body of water, a small watercraft may be an important arte of your plan. I have been grateful for them on trips that I have used them and it is plain to see why they figured so prominently into life until the advent of the automobile and how they will again if we lose are large electrical transformers due to EMP or any other reason. Motopeds and bicycles are quiet and can be carried on the outside or on top of your rig as backup transport. In truth, there are many vehicles that would serve the function of bug out vehicle admirably, but in the end, your choice will likely be determined largely by availability, opportunity and economics. Similar to the prepper who is all guns and no groceries, every so often, I see someone who owns a car that is worth more than their home or someone who has invested a substantial portion of their net worth in a vehicle while living in an apartment.
Find a vehicle that will get you from point A to point B and make sure you have your food storage and other survival priorities in place.

I am a huge proponent of modular kit and will be publishing a book on that topic soon, but it's a good thing to have backup transport on your transport as it increases the likelihood of you being able to refuel it or repair it t get it back on the road should it break down.
I am currently restomod'ing a '82 K5 Blazer as my BO vehicle, along with a trailer still in the design phase. I would imagine it would provide substantial protection as long as it was made of all metal, but it could have leaks.
The main issues are all of the gaps, non-conductive paint at doors and where metal sheets are joined and non-conductive gaskets on the doors. Well the reality was that the PLS only carried two people, so you either had two people who were mechanics driving the PLS or you had to have a second vehicle carry your mechanics. I was working as a security advisor for one if the embassies and had been in country for a few months. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring the sleeping bag on this particular mission because we had packed extra ammo and water since we were heading out so far and I made one of those last-minute decisions to leave it instead of doing the smart thing and just toss it into the vehicle.
I took one of the blankets and wrapped it around my legs and feet and used the other one for the rest of me. I learned two things that night: mylar space blankets suck as blankets and my interpreter snores like a freight train.
In a survival situation, they can be used as a ground sheet to keep the wetness from ground out and reflect heat back up to you.
If you’re sleeping in a tent, you can also slide one of these between your inner tent and the rainfly.
If at all possible, put some kind of small air buffer that won’t move between you and the blanket. There are a few other things they can be used for such as for signaling (shiny moving things are good to catch a rescuer’s attention) or for catching rainwater. For a REAL emergency blanket, I carry one of these heavy duty all-weather emergency blankets. Not only are these very sturdy and like a real lightweight blanket, you can use them for everything that one of those mylar space blankets can.

The SOL Utility blanket isnt bad, its a bit thicker than the other models and for what it is, I was quite amazed at how it help up. I also used one in 1985, same SPACE brand, for an unplanned overnight bivy on the foot of Palisade Glacier with a low temp of 35 degrees and was warm enough to sleep. I was in Guinea with State (EOD) in 02 and had similar experience with the ultra light weight space blankets.
I perfer the poncho liner for my emergency blanket, I carry one when I was in the Army because it was liteweight and and can pack very easley into any bag. Back in March I was on a camping trip with a couple friends and after I was half way to our site, I realized that I forgot my wool blanket. The downside is of course the price tag, but after testing it I still had the feeling that I actually got what I payed for. One important item that people don’t always think of when planning their bug out bag list is a file with backup copies of important documents. The nice thing about paper is it doesn’t require power (other than some kind of light to read by) and is ready to go as soon as you grab it. You can laminate them instead but if you have many pages, that weight and size will add up quickly. In addition, you should keep some kind of digital copies of your documents on a thumb drive. Obviously, one problem with a thumb drive is that if you don’t have something with a USB port to read it, your information is locked inside. If you do use a thumb drive (and I suggest that you do), you should protect the information in case someone else gets a hold of it. You can hide the files on your thumb drive to make them invisible to most people who don’t know how to unhide them. If your computer is set to show filetypes, changing the part on the right is right where you are in the step above. Adding the file to a .zip folder not only makes it smaller, you can add a password to it as well.
If you get a tiny thumb drive like the SanDisk Cruzer Fit mentioned above, you can stash it somewhere like inside an earplug case or plugged into something like the USB battery you use to charge your cell phone when the power goes out. The Kindle Paperwhite I have is much better for documents but you have to have some kind of lighting to read it.


You should keep a list of things that you may need to reference later that you should have on paper as well as in electronic backup form. Contact phone numbers and addresses of friends, family, and other contacts such as your family doctor, insurance company, and office. Emergency contact phone numbers, addresses, and directions how to get there for wherever you’re traveling such as your hotel, the Embassy, local police, local fire, local medical, etc.
If you have a ham radio and a ham radio license, get the list of repeaters and offsets for the areas you plan on going to as well as the typical frequencies that people hang out on. Manuals for any devices you have that are complicated, especially if you’re using something like a ham radio for emergency comms. Here’s a list of other items you should have both in paper and electronic backup forms for everyone in your group that has one. Also, you should keep copies of survival and other reference documents in your thumb drive and in something like a Kindle.
If you really want to be thorough, you should make three lists but just one that lists what you have and where you have it is better than nothing.
This works best when you have several things in several locations, such as your home or bug out location but can also be used to keep track of tools etc. Scenario 1: You built an awesome campfire and are about to light it but your lighter is empty.
If you only want to do one, just look at the scenarios above to see which would be most likely for you to worry about and sort it that way. If you have a lot of stuff in certain pockets, rooms, or bags, you may want to laminate a small sheet in each pocket that lists everything in that pocket. The key to something like this is to make your column heading include each level of storage such as which building, which room, which shelf, which bag, which pocket, and which pouch (such as a medical bag pouch) that each item is in. And I am not a mechanic or car salesman by trade, but I do have a solid background in technology and understanding of EMP as well what most people would term as vast experience as a self-reliant consumer. Imagine the highway or even your own street after a snowstorm without any snowplows or drivers to remove the snow and 4-wheel drive and over-size tires starts to look like a pretty good idea. Without computers, there is only so much to “do it yourself” on newer vehicles so older vehicles have greater appeal. Better still would be 2 or 3 less-expensive vehicles as opposed to a single vehicle that strains your financial resources. He would take multiple beat-up vehicles and turn them into fewer good ones … and have a bunch of spare parts left over. They sense and control virtually every function of the vehicle and are very sensitive to EMP. Sure, car manufacturers take reasonable precautions to shield them, but not against such great field strengths or over the entire frequency range EMP covers.
There are many features to look for and modifications to make to both your vehicle and your SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) regarding that vehicle. This will help the body conduct energy through the vehicle skin like the skin of a Faraday cage.
If you can find a 4×4 with the solid front axle and a carbureted 22R motor, you have a good starting point. Depending on where you live, a simple model of any of these may be a must have or you might keep one or more at a retreat or in a Toy Hauler trailer.
I do not believe that any other vehicle on this list has the volume of accessories and options available to customize it. Plan B Supply can hook you up with a Deuce and a half that is all decked out for the apocalypse for less than $40K, which is a tenth the price of a Knight, UniCat or the like, a whole lot less than an Earth Roamer and way more likely to still run after a HEMP. They were first manufactured just after WWII and were sold as the Freightliner Unimog in the US.
Space is limited on boats and must be carefully planned out, but many vessels have miniature versions of all the comforts of home. They usually have one or more sails, a diesel power plant and appliances that run off diesel, use solar and sometimes wind as backup power sources. As some of our troops were surprised to learn in Afghanistan, there is just no substitute for horses and pack animals in certain terrain.
Mules are an important part of maintaining many of our nation’s wilderness trails to this day and American mountain men would not have been able to travel the Western US trapping without horses and mules. You do not have to be a prepper to appreciate not having to deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles and being able to park in the bike rack.
If the motor is small enough or it doesn’t go faster than a certain speed motopeds are not classified as motorcycles in many states, but this varies by jurisdiction so check your local laws. In general, depending on the length of your commute, you can get away with just keeping an everyday carry bag in your commuter vehicle. The question of which car, truck, motorcycle, boat, plane, or bicycle would be the best in a SHTF scenario is a pretty vague one.
Are you looking for something that you can use as a combat vehicle in case our monetary system collapses? Some tools are better than others to get the job done but it’s really up to how you prepare and use it as to how useful it really is.
It would work in some SHTF situations because it’s 4wd, Diesel (I can make my own fuel), sits several people, and has a camper on the back.

A Honda Accord may be a super reliable vehicle, but if it breaks down, you may have a hard time fixing it.
In addition to having tools and a few spare parts, get yourself a copy of something like Auto Repair For Dummies as well as the repair manual for your specific vehicle.
In fact, it WILL happen at some point again from the sun as it has many times for billions of years. If you have a big 5-ton military vehicle in your back yard and drive it through town occasionally, everyone knows it.
You can improve these by upgrading the hubs, lifting the vehicle or modifying the wheel well to fit bigger tires, and waterproofing your engine. Some vehicles are really good for some situations but they’re pretty useless in others. You never know where you’ll be when something happens that you gotta get outta Dodge. This was because they were as easy to diagnose faults on since it typically was, as simple as saying if it won’t start- check battery, then fuel, and 99% of the time you found the fault. For example my 06 VW Jetta for example has a ECM for the wipers, seats, and lights, over 30 ecms that all talk to each other! These will let you work on the engine ECM’s, but if you want full ECM diagnostics and even adjustment you again are looking at either expensive tools or special cables that plug your laptop into the vehicle ports.
This system mounted to a PLS vehicle would allow you to drop a mobile repair shop to work on and repair a vehicle, while the rest of the convoy moved on.
But there are many good reasons to use one if it can be pre-staged, or if you have a group your moving with, and have a clear camp site in mind and don’t plan or roving looking for a new locale often. When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge. Each item in your kit will depend on your skill set and what you’re trying to prepare for.
The two I fell asleep with had lasted the night but I definitely wasn’t very satisfied with how they performed. They do reflect heat very well and they take up very little space and weigh next to nothing. Just put some kind of padding underneath you or the metal sheet will pull the heat right out of you through conduction. I keep one slid down inside the back of my bug out bag and one on my Harley, right behind the passenger seat.
It was about 40 degrees and my sleeping bag was too warm for that temperature (and made me sweat) but not having it was uncomfortably cold until I put this blanket above me. I thought for sure my hiking pole would have gone through it especially since we had a few inches of snow on the tarp adding extra weight. I used one in 1973 on a 10 day survival training trip as my sole cover and was very happy with its performance. Everyone should have several of the unbacked ( the type in the pic at the head of this article) style in their kits not for warmth but as a super strong plastic sheet replacement, ground cloth, shelter cover, solar still, so on and so forth, but other than blocking the wind, as a blanket they are worthless. I would never expect a thin piece of metallized mylar to perform anywhere close to a regular blanket or sleeping bag. They’re cut into pieces and used to wrap arms and legs with electrical tape as closures for windproofing and added warmth. Having these copies can be extremely useful if you need access to the information on them or to prove who you are if you’re traveling in a foreign country. Reducing the size of the copies on the paper and adding more than one copied page on each sheet will cut things down but only so much.
On the other hand, you can copy pretty much every document you have on one and it costs little space and weight.
If your computer doesn’t have that capability, something like 7-Zip is free and works well. The iPhone makes it easy to get to but the battery doesn’t last all that long and the screen is pretty small for some things. Also list some go-to places such as local chapters of friendly Non-governmental Organizations like UNHCRR or Doctors Without Borders. This allows you to have hundreds of books on thingss like first aid, emergency dental care, fire-making and water-purification techniques, how to make a gasifier, edible plants, how to make traps, and hundreds of other useful books that you couldn’t possibly carry in paper form. This section is a bit of overkill but I thought I’d put it down because I was thinking about it. With Excel, you can easily sort items so if you do it correctly the first time, organizing the list different ways before you print is easy once all the items are entered. The key here is to name things like the military does (which is why they’re named that way).
Once you’ve sorted your spreadsheet by pocket or bag name, your list will tell you everything you have in your medical bag, in your primary survival bag, and your main pouch, for example. You also almost always have the hollow middle area to keep other important things to keep dry.
You can tape a list of what’s contained to the inside so that you know what you have without having to open it up.
