When I first published Coloring Animal Mandalas, I just assumed that this would be a zero-instructions-needed kind of book.
One of the main reason adult coloring books are getting so popular lately is because they are a major stress-buster and tension reliever. Below I discuss my favorite pencils, markers, and a few other non-traditional art supplies that are killer for coloring. This section contains affiliate links to products I have purchased with my own money and tested with my own hands. I had a book signing at a local bookstore and ordered these for people to use so that they could play with some print outs and test the merchandise. I am also frequently raving about my Inktense colored pencils, which are actually like watercolor pencils.
Because of my carpal tunnel wrist problems, I tend to color more with markers than I do with pencils.
I hesitate to recommend these art markers to anyone but the most serious of coloring fanatics because they are redonkulously expensive. By the way, if you’re looking for a recommendation for cheaper markers that are good for coloring, there are a few that I can recommend, but in no way will they live up to the Copics. My favorite thing about Staedtler markers is that they are the LEAST likely to bleed through the paper (almost any paper) to the other side compared any other marker I’ve used. I wasn’t a fan of Sharpies at first because they shared the biggest problem with the Copics (lots of bleed through) with little to no blendability.
I was happy to leave this post up with my favorite materials above – but then I tried these gel pens and I HAD to come update this post to rave about them for coloring.
Previous postThe Masters of Fashion Illustration Adult Coloring Book – A Look Inside Preview! I can’t color it in, but i can actually fill out the blanks by drawing lines, so it looks like pattern within itself.
In the first photo above, I can see that is a picture of your book, Coloring Animal Mandalas. There’s a lot of info here and perhaps I missed it but did you mention a marker that WON’T bleed through to the back of the paper? I have just finished some adult coloring pages and was wondering if you can give ideas on what to do with them now, besides framing them. I have several coloring books that don’t have perforated sheets and there is a picture on front and back of each page. I just bought myself a Mandala coloring book from Sams and wanted to buy color pencils for it.
I’ve recently been experimenting with Stamping Up pens that I have and they are great. I also use Prismacolor Premier colored pencils, but am wondering which pencil sharpener you use on these?
I can’t color it in, but i can actually fill out the blanks by drawing lines, so it looks like pattern within itself. You can blend gel pens very easily by using your finger to blend while the ink is still wet. I bought a pack of 36 Brilliant Colours Staedtler Triplus fineliner (0.3 mm) and I do see it on the back of the page. I looked at this page because I wanted to know how they got it to look like the picture on the cover of the book. To my fellow coloures, to print the pages in the print section on your pc you can put in to fit the page and it will print the full picture. You can make them whatever size you want as long as you are smart enough to use a computer.
Self improvement (or self help) tools come in many shapes and sizes; sometimes it’s physical in nature (a self help book, having a massage, painting with water colors), or spiritual in nature (flower essences, Reiki, meditation which is both physical and spiritual, etc). Essences are generally in liquid form and can also be used in creams, ointments and oils (I sometimes combine mine with an aromatherapy oil blend). Vibrational substances are derived from light (sun, moon etc), healing energy (universal or spiritual energy, prana, Reiki etc), plants (flowers, stems, leaf etc), mineral (crystals, gold etc), environmental (sacred places), or animal. I’ve practiced journal writing as a self help tool for many years and still find it, to this day, one of the greatest self help and self improvement tools around – and it costs nothing!
Aromatherapy massage – there’s nothing quite like this one using essential oils for body, mind and spirit.
Vichy Shower – warm water is directed over your body, gently massaging it (this is heavenly, especially after a salt scrub).
Ayurvedic – part of a traditional detoxification and rejuvenation program of India called Panchakarma – vigorious massage with warm oils and herbs to remove toxins, is calming and balancing, and facilitates profound inner peace.
Hot stone massage – warm smooth stones are applied to the body and employed by the therapist’s hands. I’ve road tested many self help tools over the years; it’s been an amazing journey with the most profound assistance coming from spirit. His drawing style influence is more visible in a cartoon I drew called Genetic Research Lab 101. OK, OK, you get I support medication treatment for psychological issues, but that does not mean I can’t dream of a time I don’t have to take medications to keep my sanity!! Now, I know it’s a nightmare when I can only find Leo and not that cute girl from Nova Scotia, Ellen Page! Hot Topics Today12 Signs You Are Falling Out of Love with Your Partner Is It Stress Or An Anxiety Attack? At some point during 2005 I discovered the sense that I am connected to everything, that nothing exists outside of me. I sat on top a surf board about 100 yards off the sand, just a little north of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in San Clemente, California, for hours on end every single day.
Off the surf board, I spent most of my time at the public library reading books about the human experience—history, psychology, religion, and spirituality.
I could have easily stayed in that state of bliss had I not needed to go to work or interact with most of the people around me. From the moment I made the commitment to stay sober, I began to take a personal inventory of all the qualities I didn’t like in myself. If I have time, I do it right there, but more often than not I just write down the person’s name or a description.
Because I take the list word by word and find each offense in my own experience, I am able to discover why someone would act like a complete idiot.
I spend a little time with each trait and remember all the people I know, including me, who behave in such a manner.
Lately I’ve also been gravitating towards looking at my motives first instead of pointing a finger at others unthinkingly.

Loved this post!  It is certainly one I’m putting this practice into my own new habits today! I saw your comment and thought the same thing Jeff wrote (that Tim did not write that he was addicted to alcohol).
If he doesn’t have an addiction, why does he need rules, rituals, and a set of seven different procedures to keep himself from drinking?
I cannot diagnose the author, but as I mentioned before there is a huge body of scientific literature about addiction, and thinking your way out of it by yourself is probably the least successful way of solving the problem that there is. And Lori, I value your site a great deal, it has been a hugely inspiring and motivating site for me on a very consistent basis. This is a very polarizing and opinionated topic I realize that, but the facts are the facts and they are formed from the research and long term studies about effective treatment methods. I too practice the color game and some of the other techniques you use and they help me to be more aware of my defects, and to work on changing them. With practice the mountains turn back into mole hills, or you’ll learn to snowboard one or the other. I am not in any way attempting to denounce AA as a viable solution to addictions treatment. I went to 3 meetings a day every day for the first 6 months (2004) of my sobriety.
You’ve not spent one second in my presence before or after, yet you’re willing to write here that the way I live is not recovery?
My family remembers, many of friends who are still alive today, they remember, and I remember the type of man I was in the winter of 2003, and none of them would agree with your assessment of my level of recovery or my personal growth. The exercises I suggest have nothing to do with a choice I made not to get high or drink today. The second exercise is a way for me to discover the qualities of the person with whom I am upset and discover those very qualities in myself. Find an image with colors you love (I have a Pinterest board full of them here) and upload it to this free online color palette generator. Even if you have an attachment to the waxy smell of Crayolas, they are too fat to use for filling in tiny spaces. I really didn’t want to bring my expensive colored pencils for strangers to use and abuse. So close, in fact, that sometimes I prefer them over the Prismas despite the fact that I just said I usually choose Prismacolors first. They aren’t ideal for straight coloring, but are definitely ideal if you want to add a little water to your page. I wish they were as blendable as pencils, but they are just SO much easier on my hands to use. They also have very tiny tips, which make them absolutely perfect for the most intricate of details in your coloring books. But I had a set laying around from a different project and I tried them in my Coloring Flower Mandala Postcards book and I kind of fell in love with them.
Are “Sargent Art 22-7251 Colored Pencils, Pack of 50, Assorted Colors” a good choice? You can also photocopy it before hand if you want to make you you like how it looks before coloring in the book. I am not involved at all in the distribution end of my books, with the obvious exception of selling my own copies.
Enjoy adding gorgeous color to these one-of-a-kind designs in this downloadable adult coloring book. Meditation techniques – a fabulous self help tool which greatly benefits overall health and wellbeing.
Journal writing is a fabulous self help healing tool connecting you with your true essence, your spiritual self.
When you’ve done that write in your journal the excitement, enthusiasm and passion you intend to experience for the day ahead, the projects you’re working on, friends you’ll catch up with, food you’ll eat, possible miracles that might happen, shopping to be done, your work day etc. I was given small smooth rocks to hold in either hand, at the end of the massage the therapist held my feet and ‘tuned’ me, which sounded like a clarinet going up and down the scales. It shows two over-sized lab technicians wondering if they were successful in their experiment.
Cool For Teenagers coloring pages are a fun way for kids of all ages to develop creativity, focus, motor skills and color recognition. I owe most of real growth spiritually not to the texts, not to meditation, and not even to surfing; I owe it to my time slinging drinks. I knew that if I were to remain sober without going to AA, and without church, I would need to develop certain traits. You’ll be walking down the street, overthinking your life away, and then your brain will see someone walk by. At some time, I have felt and acted in a manner that, at that moment, I found reprehensible.
I know the root cause of their actions, and I can release the resentment I feel toward them. Throughout the years I’ve noticed quite a difference when I actively practice this and when I don’t.
One that especially struck me is the idea that not fully breathing triggers the fight-or-flight reflex. Interesting, since by embracing buddhism you certainly have no aversion to to spiritual principles. Working in a bar with no external support system is nothing but a countdown clock to ending up drunk again.
That being said, I also know many recovering alcoholics, and some of them have been sober for decades while working around alcohol.
My irritability meter has been offer the charts this week and this is a very constructive approach to channeling that energy into love. And if there is a real addiction, there are much, much, more successful recovery strategies that are available. However, this topic is delving into an area where misinformation is extremely dangerous and there is not the need for personal opinions, there are literally decades of research,  hospitals, and medical specialties exclusively devoted to this topic and there have been millions of hours of research published about it. I realize many people just do not want to hear that information, or discredit it,  but it is the best source of dispassionate hard data that is available to us.
It helps to be more tolerant, loving and kinder to others… I ask myself what do I see in them, that is me ,that bothers me.
I regularly suggest that people who suffer with addictions find a meeting, get a sponsor, sit down and listen. I take no responsibility for the hours you will lose once you start playing with this tool. I have to admit, for a cheap set of pencils these are astonishingly awesome. This is a GREAT beginner set for adults or teens.

Polychromos are oil based instead of wax based, and they are extremely high quality artist grade pencils (and priced as such!!!).
Inktense pencils are bright, bold colors that once wet turn to liquid ink that is permanent when dry. I actually buy them at a local art supply store a few at a time and pay more than that each. And always use a scrap piece of paper between pages in a book in case it bleeds through to the next sheet.
But because the tips are so tiny, they are decidedly not good for coloring any large areas.
The fact that they bleed a lot actually helps to keep the wet edge where you are coloring, making it so that when you fill in an area there isn’t a darker strip where the strokes overlap. I heard lots of complaints about other gel pen brands = that many of them skip or dry up, but I didn’t have either problem with these. Not to diss neutral colors or anything, but a girl needs a big spectrum to choose from, ya know?!
Not only is it fun, but it can also help bust stress and improve your drawing skills. To help your continuing education in coloring, we’ve added to our collection of free coloring book pages for adults with these two cheerful pages featuring inspirational quotes. This is a wonderful self help tool to employ for inner healing, letting go and for creating something new (a masterpiece for your lounge room wall). Part of ancient wisdom, vibrational essences are used in healing to assist with the removal of emotional blocks and patterns, as well as resolving issues from past lives.
Michel Y Roy specializes in finding the ROOT cause of your health problems; treating patients using unique knowledge and innovative technology!
The stress and lack of oxygen triggers my flight-or-fight defenses, and I’m prone to act unloving to the people I find offensive. So I made sure to practice acceptance, and I developed techniques to help me heal and grow.
The amount of busyness made it impossible for me to notice when the alarm went off. So I developed the color game. It just goes to show that everyone is different, and what works for one person might not work for someone else! But, what Tim describes is not recovery, it is someone trying to think and intellectualize their way out of not drinking.
That is my message, if you are really addicted, truly, then just thinking about pretty colors is not going to stop you from getting high. Areas like this one, where peoples lives are absolutely at risk, should be given very serious consideration and there should be recognition of that existing information.
I wholeheartedly believe the color play will work for me, this is exactly what I was seeking. To my utter surprise, how to color in coloring books has been THE most asked question I have gotten as a coloring book artist. The colors aren’t quite as vivid or blendable as the higher priced pencils, but they are solid decent quality at a tiny fraction of the price. I actually have the 150 color set, but the price of that set is almost $50 dollars more than the 132 color set. And the paper stock in my postcards book is nice and thick, and I was surprised as can be that the Sharpies didn’t bleed through to the other side. PanPastels are essentially chalk in the shape of a disk and are applied with a sponge, in the same way that you would apply eyeshadow to your skin. When I was introduced to Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching, I found a similar exercise: Mindfulness Bells.
I haven’t actually slaughtered a bunch of people like the Third Reich, but my road rage has brought similar imaginings to my mind. Regardless, I appreciate your intention, to ensure people who are struggling know they don’t have to go it alone. It just won’t and it is a little silly posting that as any kind of advice for stopping ones triggers for using. I realized that most adults haven’t colored in 20+ years (or sometimes 60-70+ years!). I’ve heard of people coloring on planes, in front of the TV, in coffee shops, and even in therapy sessions. They are just extremely versatile, reliable, and their tiny tips fit better into tiny spaces than the Copic markers will. I love my Prismacolors, but you have to press pretty hard on the paper to use them and after a few hours that can really mess with my carpal tunnel syndrome. I’ve invested in my first set of 48 Prismacolor pencils and am now looking to add to my collection of resources.
This is a rather ill-informed post with regards to how addiction works, and hopefully it will NOT inspire other people with real addictions to go it alone, it is like telling someone with cancer they can use magnets to make their tumors go away. Addiction is a extremely complex and compelling biological and psychological process and if this method worked, alcoholism and drug addiction would have been eradicated centuries ago.
This can be a good thing a lot of the time, but other times I really want and need bright, saturated colors. Doing it in isolation and working around your drug of choice in early recovery is an extremely dangerous place to be, and as I said, statistically speaking there are huge odds against the author achieving long term sobriety with this approach. For me personally, I like to color in my studio, which is an enclosed porch and has tons of natural light.
I use them, and have seen them used extensively on backgrounds, skies, and sometimes filling in the white space around a colored image. My take away from reading the article was that since the author explicitly said he did not want to use any external established recovery resources, that he must have felt his relationship with alcohol was one where pursuing those options would be the usual path, meaning, addiction. That is not my personal opinion, it is the finding of virtually every study about addiction that has ever been conducted. The difference is small, to be sure, and some people might feel like I’m splitting hairs. And since they are wax-based they wear down incredibly quickly, so that after you sharpen your tip, it will be gone within just a minute or two. The alcohol based ink takes slightly longer to dry than regular markers, which means you can color somewhat sloppily and still get even, smooth color. But despite these drawbacks, they give me the absolute BEST results out of all my coloring tools. In fact, every single one of my coloring books covers (except for the first one) has been colored with Prismacolors.
