Several studies have shown that caffeine intake is associated with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.  However, until recently researchers did not understand the exact relationship between caffeine and the disease. Researchers are getting closer and closer to finding a way of how to prevent and treat Parkinson’s disease.  Caffeine consumption may be the answer, but more studies need to be conducted in order to know for sure.

Parkinson’s makes movement more difficult as the chemical in the body, dopamine production is slowed.

Medical Encyclopedia states “Parkinson’s disease is a disabling condition of the brain characterized by slowness of movement, shaking, stiffness, and in the later stages, loss of balance.”  Many of these symptoms are due to the loss of certain nerves in the brain, which results in the lack of a chemical called dopamine. Payami’s discovery was important because “the knowledge of interaction between GRIN2A, which is involved in neurotransmission in the brain, and caffeine, which is an adenosine-A2A-receptor antagonist, will stimulate new research towards understanding the cause and progression of Parkinson’s disease.”  It is also important because results may lead to personalized prevention and treatment of the disorder.
Medication can be prescribed to increase dopamine production in the brain but PD is a degenerative disease which worsens over time. If PD is diagnosed then read up on it, become familiar with treatments that are available to manage the symptoms and learn all you can from the Parkinson’s Foundation or Education Network.
