For insomnia in the elderly, melatonin has been taken by mouth in doses of 0.1-5 milligrams at or two hours before bedtime for up to several months, in the form of melatonin-rich night milk or slow-release Circadin┬«. For Alzheimer’s disease or cognitive decline, melatonin has been taken by mouth in doses of 1-10 milligrams daily for 10 days up to 35 months. If you are taking melatonin supplements that are over the recommended dosage of 1mg, or multiple pills throughout the night, then you are taking too much and it’s probably diminishing your sleep quality more so than improving it. There’s lot of melatonin products on the market where a single dose is several times over 1 mg. Also, because you produce less melatonin as you age, for those over 60 and having trouble sleeping can try a low dose of melatonin and see if it helps. The danger is when people purchase melatonin and the dosage is above the recommended range of 0.3-1mg. Melatonin may in some individuals cause rebound insomnia, as do some other sleeping pills, but to a much lesser degree.

When stopping melatonin, there can be a variety of withdrawal symptoms one may experience, although some people experience none.

I would imagine that the best first step would be to keep going without the melatonin or other things you’ve tried to help you sleep.
