A CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) is a therapy device used to treat sleep apnea and is a great alternative to surgical methods of treating the condition, which contributes to the machine’s popularity.
Philip Westbrook, MD, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at UCLA and Chief Medical Officer of Ventus Medical, Inc., in Belmont, CA, emphasized this point in discussing the need to develop alternative treatments. For a chronic condition such as sleep apnea, developing treatments that are effective in addressing the mechanism of disease as well as patient compliance requires both a deep knowledge of the pathophysiology of sleep apnea and the anatomy of the upper airway and an understanding of human psychology and behavior. This is not a new idea, but one that underlies the development of two new therapies that have emerged to treat sleep apnea and will be applied to measuring the efficacy of these treatments. PROVENT therapy (Ventus Medical, Inc.) is one emerging alternative to the therapies currently used to treat sleep apnea.

Most people do not sleep with a mask on, so it is understandable that this may be hard to become accustomed to. Surgical treatments, oral applications, and the current gold standard treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) work for some patients, but data indicate that up to 50% of patients are not successfully treated with these methods.
Although CPAP is the gold standard for treating obstructive sleep apnea, many patients are noncompliant; therefore, researchers are investigating other methods of treatment.

Unlike CPAP, which requires a machine to provide continuous positive airway to keep the nasal airway open during sleep, PROVENT therapy relies on the patient’s own breathing to keep the nasal airway open by using a device that uses nasal expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP). Rashmi Parmar, Diplomate-ABDSM, has dedicated her life to helping those that suffer with sleep apnea. This device helps keep the airway open so someone using the machine not only gets more oxygen, but also snores less and has fewer experiences of gasping during sleep. For example, a nasal mask is much smaller, with straps that cover less of the face, so it is less likely to smother. A last resort for some is to set an alarm for later in the night to make sure the mask is still in place. The valves are open when inhaling to allow for nearly unobstructive airflow, but close when exhaling, directing air through small air channels to limit airflow and increase expiratory pressure. The humidifier can be adjusted for personal comfort, and when used in conjunction with saline nasal spray, these symptoms can be relieved. There are many different options for surgical treatment and they should be tailored to the individual patient’s needs.
Using surgery as an alternative to CPAP is sure to be an attractive option for many but it is also a drastic one with a number of risks.

These oral devices look like mouth guards, the difference being they move the tongue or lower jaw forward, opening the airway making it easier to breathe.
Although not suitable for patients with severe OSA, when used correctly, this form of treatment is safe and relatively reliable. When you breathe out , however, the valve closes and air is forced out through a smaller channel. The biggest drawback is the cost, which works at around $2 per night, more expansive than CPAP in the long run.AcupunctureThe final procedure in this guide to alternatives to CPAP is a treatment that will be familiar to many but perhaps not widely associated with sleep apnea.
Researchers in Brazil have been studying the potential of acupuncture as a viable, affordable substitute for CPAP treatments.
