Symform's decentralized model allows the company to offer secure and reliable storage for hundreds and even thousands less than competitors in the industry. Cloud storage services are nothing new to the world of technology anymore, and every other day, we see a new entrant in this rather populated market.
Before we begin, please be advised that Symform will give you 10GB of free cloud space upon initial setup.
To get started, you need to download the Windows client from the Symform website (link at the end of the post). Notice that on the configuration panel, you have a series of tabs on the left side, most of which will be greyed out at this stage. The next stop is Symform’s environment configuration, which include specifying the upload and download bandwidth usage, as well as the business hours. The next setting you’ll need to tweak with is Bandwidth Allowed, which will govern the exact bandwidth usage during and after work hours for both downstream and upstream data. Finally, you get to pick the Contribution Folder, where Symform will store the cloud data (in encrypted form, mind you). Notice that the Next button here is replaced by Apply, hitting which will take you to the Progress tab. Right after getting done with all these configurations I got my first annoyance with Symform. If you click a folder, you can browse its contents as well, but there’s no viewer, and data cannot be downloaded, in general.
All in all, Symform is a pretty solid contender in the quite-saturated cloud storage solutions market. Now, Linux users will be pleased to know there are a variety of online backup services that can protect their data.
CrashPlan comes with a handy desktop app that runs separately from the background service, so you can view the status of backups and change settings. When logging in to the browser interface, you’ll be prompted for your local credentials, then your IDrive credentials. IDrive is well-suited for backing up servers, but it’s just as easy to back up desktop versions of Linux. SpiderOak provides binaries for Debian, Fedora, and Slackware-based Linux operating systems.
After installing the binary, you’ll log in with your SpiderOak account, or create a new account. With Symform, you get free cloud storage space by contributing excess space on your hard drive. Symform does not support file versioning, so you would need to use a separate application to retain multiple file versions, then back them up to the Symform cloud. You can add and remove folders in your backup set, as well as choose to not back up files over a certain size (under Advanced options).
As far as features, you can restore the previous 10 versions of files with the premium plan, and unlimited file versions with the business plan. Draper, Utah-based StorageCraft, a developer of disk-based backup and disaster recovery products, said today that it has partnered with Symform, a provider of cloud-based backup and data protection services, to provide a cloud backup product for small-to-midsized businesses. Can you trust your company's data to remain secure when it's sliced and dispersed to a storage cloud running on unknown hardware?
Storage slicing is an innovative storage technology offered by companies including Symform and Cleversafe.
With Cleversafe, your sliced data resides in your own private cloud, or on rented storage systems in one or more data centers. The advantage of the data dispersal approach is that the volume of storage space needed is usually well below what is required by traditional replication methods. Storage slicing clearly offers benefits in terms of storage optimization and business continuity preparedness, but what about security?
In fact, both companies have built comprehensive security features into their services, and while Symform and Cleversafe take different approaches, both claim to offer high levels of security for your data. Symform's system works by breaking your data into 64MB chunks, and encrypting each chunk with strong AES 256-bit encryption using a unique key. If your organization has experience with encryption key management, then there is no reason why you can't also pre-encrypt your data using any algorithm you choose, before the data enters the Symform system. To put the security of Symform's system in perspective, let's imagine that your company stored its data unencrypted in a single data center. Using Symform's approach, even if hackers were to infiltrate Cloud Control and access the keys for every block of encrypted data, they would encounter an additional barrier: to access the data they would need to retrieve 64 fragments of a given block from 64 different unknown locations.
A more likely scenario is that a hacker might gain access to one of the data fragments stored on a Symform customer's storage device. As additional security measures, all traffic between a client machine and a storage device is protected using Transport Layer Security (TLS), and each storage device uses digital certificates to prevent "rogue storage nodes" from being added to the system.
With Cleversafe's system there is no central key repository that could be compromised because fragments of each key are distributed with each slice, and the key can only be reassembled by retrieving a threshold number of slices.
Clearly, as the owner of the data you need to be able to access it whenever you need to -- and with the correct authorization credentials to use either Symform's or Cleversafe's systems you can reassemble your data from distributed slices.


The bottom line: Barring the discovery of any new or previously unknown security vulnerabilities in either system, both can be considered highly secure.

Their claim of up to 200GB for free can be made true by a) inviting your friends to use the service, and b) sharing storage space from your own hard disk, which contributes to the Symform cloud for storing other users’ data. There is no web signup, and once you’ve downloaded the client and launched it, the first screen will prompt you to register with the service using your email address.
As you proceed with your device’s configuration, these settings will start becoming available, and will let you manage aspects such as device type, local folders to be synced, environment, bandwidth allocation, summary etc. The next two screens will merely show you information about your device rather than asking for any inputs, so move forth to Sync Local Folders to decide which directories from your machine will be backed up to the cloud.
As the service is targeted more towards businesses rather than personal users, you can limit the bandwidth consumption during work hours to minimize the impact on routine workflow, while it will automatically increase once the workday has finished. It is also in this panel that you’ll specify how much storage you want to contribute to Symform’s cloud from your own hard drive. Summary, will give you a complete overview of all the settings that you’ve done, just before they’re applied. The service runs in the background, it hogs your bandwidth, but there is no system tray indicator that can be used to monitor progress or pause the service for a while. The default is the Synchronization Activity tab, where you get to see all the devices connected with your account and their current status, synced folders, history of previous devices, along with a few other account settings.
Folders within folders can be explored, but you cannot download items to your local machine from the web interface.
The service offers something unique in terms of free storage space, their paid plans are rather cheap and flat rate, and the data is secured using Resilient Storage Architecture (RSA). The teaser section of the article, before you expand it, had me ready to sign up for Symform immediately.

If contribution is enabled, there will always be communication between the NAS and Symform Cloud. StorageCraft said it is releasing a new Business Continuity Suite, which is powered by Symform's online backup services.
The technology works by breaking chunks of data up into multiple slices, encrypting them, adding extra bits for redundancy (in a similar fashion to RAID), and then distributing the slices to multiple storage devices -- often in separate geographical locations.
Symform's system is more unusual in that it uses the concept of storage sharing – in which slices of your data are stored on the storage devices of multiple other Symform customers. For companies with large amounts of data, this can mean a significant savings in storage requirements.
How can you be sure your data is well protected when it is dispersed to multiple locations? Each encrypted chunk is divided into 64 1MB fragments, and 32 parity fragments are then generated and added using a RAID algorithm to make 96 1Mb fragments.
This can offer an additional layer of protection, but if you lose the key then your data will be permanently lost. A hacker managing to infiltrate the data center in this situation could easily get access to your data. Even if this were achievable and the original data block reassembled, this might still not be enough if the data has been pre-encrypted by the customer. But the fragment by itself is useless: it contains what appears to be random data, and it has just one sixty-fourth of the information needed to reconstitute a block of the original data, which would anyway be encrypted at least once, and possibly twice. This can only be done using Cleversafe Accesser software or client software and an Accesser hardware appliance, after authenticating yourself on to the system. This price gap has held back adoption of cloud storage even though it has advantages over local storage. With that in mind, we found Symform to be something different from the lot – not just in what if offers, but also by how it works.


This shared hard disk space is the main differentiating factor of the service, as on one hand, you’re giving up your personal storage space, but on the other hand, you’re gaining cloud storage, making your data more secure and accessible remotely. In my experience, this was frankly impossible, as the port I used was open for sure, but for some reason, the application kept rejecting it. At best, you can only guess that Symform might be working, which is a huge letdown in my opinion. You can also view the contribution activity (which will most likely be empty at the beginning, reason later) and device summary for all your linked machines. Data sharing is achieved by linking two or more computers with the same Symform account, and allowing folder sharing between them.
However, the requirement of sharing space from your local machine is, at best, questionable.
They just totally destroyed, without prior warning, three years worth of data from a five year long research project.
The firms said the deal ties StorageCraft's ShadowProtect technology to Symform's Cooperative Storage Cloud.
Only a proportion of the slices needs to be retrieved in order to recreate the original block of data, thus ensuring that the data remains available even if multiple storage devices fail completely. In return, you are obligated to make a portion of your own company's unused storage capacity available to host slices of other Symform customers' data. And by distributing the slices in multiple locations, the underlying data is protected in the event of multiple storage device failures or even a disaster disabling an entire data center.
Symform's system in particular, in which your data is stored on other (unknown) organizations' storage devices, should surely set alarm bells ringing. These fragments are then distributed randomly to 96 different storage nodes -- storage made available by other Symform users. You could add a level of security by encrypting your data -- but if you stored the key in the same data center and the hacker accessed the key, then he would also be able to access the data. For example, you could choose to have your data split into sixteen slices, with only ten needed to reassemble the original data. Anyone accessing individual data slices on any storage device would only see apparently random data, with no clue as to where the other slices are located.
But what is also clear is that an unauthorized user faces an insurmountable challenge in trying to steal your data by accessing the distributed storage devices themselves.

Symform is a cloud-based data backup and storage solution that offers up to 200GB of free space for all your precious data, complete with a Windows client that is essential to use the service effectively. A slider is available to control shared capacity, changing which will be verified against available space on your machine just below the slider itself. Logging into the web interface gives a better idea, but that’s a workaround rather than a feature.
The sharing controls are extensive, and you can even set up one specific directories to share with specific devices only, all according to your own wishes. Minus a few annoyances, Symform is one cloud service that holds great promise, and we may see it evolve into something much bigger and better over the years. I decided that the service just wasn’t worth trying out for me after reading that they only give you 10GB of data, unless you either share free space on your drive, or invite friend(s?).
But these tools require you to set up an FTP server (or other location) for offsite backups. All you have to do is run the install script, and you’ll be guided through the setup process. In the event of a disaster, Symform enables an automatic restore of those backups by mirroring the files back locally to any replacement computer. The keys for the AES encryption are managed by Symform itself in a distributed database the company calls Cloud Control.
When a file enters the system ,an integrity check value is added to it and it is then encrypted with AES, using a random 256-bit key. In addition, centralized data centers are more susceptible to vulnerability at a single point of failure.
Tooltips are available next to almost all settings, and can come in handy if you cannot figure out what each setting does. I would also like to clarify that this article does not cover every aspect of the service (as it was simply not possible to do so), so head on to the official website, explore, and decide for yourself if it’s worth your time (and space, and perhaps, money as well) or not.
Files may also be “shared” across computers for scenarios such as creating a regional instant restore (hot standby) for backups for fast restore in the event of a disaster or simply to enable collaboration between users or corporate sites by sharing files. A hash of the data plus the key is then added to the encrypted data to create a data package, which is then divided into sixteen slices. These slices are distributed and stored on separate storage devices at the same or separate locations.
I should be able to have my system synced up with their servers, confirm from my own system that my data is constantly being backed up safely, and be able to change any settings from my side of the fence.
To reassemble the package, it is necessary to retrieve at least ten slices, and once this has been done it can be decrypted using the key that gets reassembled along with the rest of the package. If any of you know of such a service, please post a reply here so that everyone else can be aware of a safe, viable alternative, and please shoot me an e-mail to shockw4ve_x.
