An IT manager guide for building on virtualization and cloud computing technologies to implement private cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS). With KPMG predicting a doubling of cloud services revenue over the next two years, it’s a good time to point out where cloud computing has gained strength over the past year in capabilities and services. Here are the top seven developments we saw in public cloud computing in 2012: The three biggest setbacks, and the four biggest wins.
The June 29 outage came after the region suffered a series of violent electrical storms, and the outages were contained to one availability zone inside the data center.
None of these incidents was a crippling event for Amazon customers or for Amazon’s cloud infrastructure business.
The periodic outages suggest just what a complex beast infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is. System Center – Virtual Machine Manager is used to manage your cloud environment, from compute, storage, networking up to virtual machines and services. Fully Manage Windows File Server – In Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 you can now fully manage not only third-party vendor storage over SMI-S you can now manage Windows file shares for a Hyper-V over SMB deployment.
Bare-Metal deployment of SOFS clusters – You can now not only deploy new Hyper-V hosts from bare-metal, you can now also deploy new Windows File Servers and create Scale-Out File Server clusters and manage Storage Spaces. Storage Classification for File Shares – In System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager you could create classifications for classic block storage which was managed by VMM. Synthetic Fibre Channel – Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V supported virtual Fibre Channel inside the Hyper-V guest virtual machines. VMM library ODX support – In SP1 VMM used BITS to deploy new Virtual Machines from a template from a VMM library. Shared VHDX Support for Guest Clustering – Hyper-V 2012 R2 made a new feature available called Shared VHDX which allows a VHDX to be used by multiple VMs at the same time.
Live cloning of Virtual Machines – Since Hyper-V 2012 R2 can finally live clone virtual machines VMM 2012 R2 does support this feature. Support for differencing VHDs – In 2012 Virtual Machine Manager supported dynamic and fixed VHDs and VHDX files. Managing top of the rack switch compliance – System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager can communicate with switches from different vendors and can be used to monitor the ports and VLANs on the switch.
IP Address Management – VMM 2012 R2 integrates in IPAM which is comes with Windows Server 2012 R2. Deploy Network Virtualization Gateways via Service Templates – Microsoft added a Service Template which allows you to deploy Network Virtualization Gateways to Hyper-V hosts, which can be used to connect VM Networks via the physical hardware or via VPN to other environments. Hyper-V Recovery Manager – Hyper-V Recovery Manager will allow you to do failover from on datacenter to another using clouds.

System Center Operations Manager Dashboard – Microsoft added a new Cloud Health Dashboard for System Center Operations Manager. That’s one of the conclusions of a recent survey of 1,300 corporate IT users, which sought to better understand employee habits regarding shadow IT. The survey zeroed in on adoption of Dropbox, the cloud-based storage and file-sharing provider. It’s no surprise that the survey sponsor, Nasuni, has a self interest in publishing these results, as the vendor is a provider of enterprise storage to large organizations. The Nasuni survey finds that across the board, at least half of the respondents use Dropbox in their organizations. The report cautions that in many cases, corporate information is stored within personal Dropbox accounts. In fact, the survey also found that half of employees use these cloud file-sharing and storage services — even though they are aware that their employer has a policy against it.
The problem likely won’t go away anytime soon, as it is being fueled by mobile technology. As the number of devices grows, the use of Dropbox and shadow IT will simultaneously increase to meet the demands of new users. A typical cloud storage system architecture includes a master control server and several storage servers. For some computer owners, finding enough storage space to hold all the data they've acquired is a real challenge. While cloud storage sounds like it has something to do with weather fronts and storm systems, it really refers to saving data to an off-site storage system maintained by a third party.
One issue that information experts, computer scientists and entrepreneurs debate is the concept of data ownership. At the same time, we should look at the cloud’s weaknesses, as a cautionary tale for those IT teams whom KPMG says are about to migrate production applications to the cloud. A few customers likely dropped the service, as WhatsYourPrice did after the online dating service got a flood of complaints during the two-hour June 29 outage.
Its supposedly redundant, resilient architecture keeps coming up with unanticipated ways of crapping out during predictable events, or from the occasional human error. In System Center 2012 R2 – Virtual Machine Manager you can also create classifications for file shares. In System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager, VMM now used the SMB to copy templates from the library to the host, which also allows to use ODX (Offload Data Transfer) to offload the copy job to the storage array if this feature is available.
This allows you to create new Logical Networks inside VMM from IPAM or to get networks from VMM into IPAM.

The fact that the CFO is doing his or her own thing with Dropbox doesn’t make it any easier.
Dropbox usage is partcularly strong within universities, service firms, and manufacturers.
About 58% of respondents with a personal mobile device say they resort to using their own device to access work files because the company does not provide the tools they require. Twenty-five percent of survey respondents plan to have an additional smart phone or tablet before the .
If Carlin were to update that routine today, he could make the same observation about computer information.
Instead of storing information to your computer's hard drive or other local storage device, you save it to a remote database. For example, if you store your data on a cloud storage system, you'll be able to get to that data from any location that has Internet access. However, the ongoing problem of outages gives cloud skeptics ammunition against moving essential applications there, even as the likes of Amazon, Google, Rackspace and Microsoft win the debate around other performance factors, such as load balancing and database services.
Cloud providers do have a better track record for uptime than the average enterprise data center, but cloud architects still have their work cut out . Work as a Cloud Architect for itnetX, a consulting and engineering company located in Switzerland. Dropbox usage is prevalent in the mobile world as well; after e-mail, it is the most common tool used for accessing work files on a mobile device. It seems that everyone with a computer spends a lot of time acquiring data and then trying to find a way to store it.
You wouldn't need to carry around a physical storage device or use the same computer to save and retrieve your information.
I am focused on Microsoft Technologies, especially Microsoft Cloud & Datacenter solutions based Microsoft System Center, Microsoft Virtualization and Microsoft Azure. Desperate computer owners might delete entire folders worth of old files in order to make space for new information. 22, Amazon suffered an outage of its Elastic Block Storage service for a few hours, making it impossible for some companies to update their websites or retrieve data, even though the sites remained on display.
