Veeam Software is announcing Veeam Backup and Replication v7 data protection software includes two new innovations: built-in WAN Acceleration and Backup from Storage Snapshots. Veeam Backup and Replication v7's most significant updates are its built-in WAN Acceleration and Storage Snapshots with HP. Veeam has been offering Free, Standard and Enterprise Editions of Veeam Backup and Replication, but now is adding Enterprise Plus which includes Built-in WAN Acceleration and Backup from Storage Snapshots. Up until now there has been a lack of direct access to NFS storage in VDDK to read data during backup operations. Veeam is known for their backup, replication and virtualization management solution for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, and this announcement indicates up to 50% faster offsite backup using the built-in WAN Acceleration. The built-in WAN Acceleration was designed specifically by Veeam for Veeam backups and copies data to offsite locations up to 50x faster than a regular file copy.
Current Enterprise Edition users and those who purchase or upgrade to Enterprise Edition before July 1 of this year will receive a free upgrade to Enterprise Plus through November 1, 2013.

This builds on last year's release of Veeam Explore for SAN Snapshots which enables VM recovery and individual items right from periodic SAN snapshots for better RTO. With the new version of its software, Veeam is starting to let some of what users can expect out. Veeam will be introducing a Direct NFS processing mode similar to its Direct SAN processing mode. While customers enjoyed this feature, in order to achieve proper backups, the primary array had to be used as the source.
Veeam can now, in just a few clicks, create completely isolated, yet full speed, copies of a production environment using existing storage snapshots. On top of these features, Veeam Backup and Replication v7 includes over 50 new features and enhancements to the software including Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint, VMware vCloud Director Integration, Self-Service Recovery of VMs and Guest Files, and Native Tape Support. The speed erases the need for IT managers to buy a WAN acceleration appliance or extra network bandwidth.

While traditional storage snapshots haven't been fail-proof because if the SAN went down the snapshots were lost, Veeam's solution creates true backups and replicas from which IT can restore.
Now a new Veeam proxy will run a NFS client to directly access any NFS share exposed to VMware vSphere, supporting both the traditional NFS v3 and the new NFS 4.1 available in vSphere 6. NFS share allows complete visibility of single files, enabling users to backup and replicate VMs directly from the NAS array while avoiding the need to cross the hypervisor layer for their activities. From the secondary location, users can take true backups of their VMs to an isolated backup storage. And imagine doing this straight from the storage array, without the need for a backup first.
