If you choose to set your new Apple product up as a new device, just sign in with your Apple ID (or create one on your device). Lastly, iOS will now ask you whether you want to share diagnostic information with Apple, which may help them improve the iOS experience in the future. If you aren’t yet ready to make the plunge to iCloud, you can still set up your device using iTunes.
If you’re upgrading from another device, iTunes will detect previous backups and allow you to restore your previous data, which will set your device up the way you had your previous device set up. Find a few gigs of breathing room by taming bloated apps, culling podcasts, trimming attachments, and more. Sure, 16GB of storage sounded like plenty when you first bought your iPhone, but you probably regretted your decision to go with Applea€™s cheapest option when those pesky a€?low storagea€? warnings started popping up. Deleting and reinstalling bloated social apps is an easy way to recover iPhone and iPad storage space. When you do, you may be surprised to find Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social apps among your biggest storage hogs. Unfortunately, therea€™s no way to purge a filea€™s a€?Documents & dataa€? cache from the main iOS settings, and while some specific social apps may have options for cleaning out their junk files, most dona€™t. Text messages are tiny in terms of storage, but the same cana€™t be said of the photos and videos that are often attached to them. Open a Messages thread and tap Details to see all the photos, video clips and other attachments stored in the conversation.
To see the attachments from a particularly long Messages thread, just open the app, tap a thread, tap Details, then scroll down to the Attachments section.
To quickly trash a bunch of message attachments while at the same time keeping Messages data from getting out of control, you can set the Messages app to auto-delete messages as it goes. If you got caught up in the Serial hype but havena€™t checked your podcast app in a few months, watch outa€”you might have dozens of automatically queued episodes sitting on your iOS device. You can, of course, quickly free up space by deleting all those storage-hogging podcast episodesa€”after all, you can always just re-download thema€”but a smarter move is to set your favorite podcast app to keep only a few unplayed episodes at a time.
Just as old podcast episodes can start to pile up, so can issues from your digital magazine subscriptions, to the tune of hundreds of megabytes or more.
Some digital magazine apps boast an a€?auto-deletea€? option thata€™ll toss out old issues automatically.
If you see any magazine apps in the iOS Manage Storage screen that are taking up more than their fair share of storage, just open the culprits and clear out those old issuesa€”which, as with podcasts, youa€™ll be able to download again. Make sure to back up your images before you turn iCloud Photo Library off and on again on your device. But even though iOS is supposed to a€?optimizea€? your photo storage with iCloud Photo Library turned on, the cache of pictures and videos on your device may still swell to several gigs, easily filling a huge chunk of your precious storage.
First, though, youa€™ll want to make sure all those snapshots and videos in iCloud Photo Library are backed up somewhere. If you have a Mac, launch the Photos app, click Photos > Preferences, make sure iCloud Photo Library is checked, then select the a€?Download Originals to this Maca€? setting. Once your iOS device is done unsyncing itself from iCloud Photo Library, turn it back on again. PCWorld helps you navigate the PC ecosystem to find the products you want and the advice you need to get the job done.
In my Four Month Update post I discussed using iCloud Photo Library’s “Optimize iPad Storage” settings. Videos stored in iCloud Photo Library were loading similarly well earlier this year, but that reliability is also gone, which is quite disappointing. If Apple’s going to keep the “Optimize” setting around, I think it needs a little more love to make it usable.
When I select photos or videos, I should be able to tap a “save to device” button within the Share menu.
Of course, the download buttons wouldn’t be much use unless you could tell what was in the cloud, and what was stored locally.
In the meantime, I’ve set my iCloud Photo Library to download all photos and videos at full resolution. I plan to intermittently offload videos to Dropbox as I shoot more of them, but I’ll keep frequently watched ones right within iCloud Photo Library at full resolution.
Clearly iCloud still doesn’t cut it for any use other than 1 user with basic picture management for iPhone. Something messing up my calculations is also the 1Tb free Microsoft offered for 2 users when I got the 365 Office for iOS.
Dropbox doesn’t have an easy way to keep a large number of pictures stored locally on my device. Enter your email below to get exclusive access to our best articles and tips before everybody else. On a Mac, open the System Preferences window (Apple menu > System Preferences), click the iCloud icon, and ensure the Find My Mac box is checked. Lost Mode (iPhones and iPads): Enable Lost Mode as soon as possible when your device is lost or stolen.
Erase: You can also remotely erase the device, removing any sensitive personal or business data. Whatever you think of Apple, their device-tracking and remote-locking solutions are the best integrated services in the industry. Being a Hardware Geek, Technically I would like to know in detail at the code level how all the Apple features work but I'm afraid they will never tell.

Your browser is not currently supported. You may be able to use iCloud with the mail, contacts and calendar apps on your device.

If you just got your new iPad, you're going to want to set it up and get it working just as quickly and effectively as possible. For most people, most of the time, we recommend iCloud, but we'll walk you through both of them below. When you turn on your new iPad, you'll be greeted with a Lock screen that simply says "iPad". If this is the first time you've ever used an Apple product or service or just want a new one, you can create an Apple ID. Agree to the terms and conditions of service by tapping the blue Agree button on the bottom left.
For the smoothest experience and longest battery life, we always recommend setting your new iPad up as new (see above). A progress bar will show you an approximation of how long it will take to download your backup.
Once your iPad reboots, you'll be asked to re-enter all your passwords (as a security measure, iCloud will not restore passwords).
If a software update is available for your new iPad, a popup notification will let you know, and a red badge will appear at the top righthand corner of your Settings app. Just like setting up your new iPad, you can either do software updates directly on your device, over-the-air (OTA) or by plugging into iTunes on your PC.
OTA on-device updates are faster and more convenient since your iPad will only download the changes and update in place, so once it's done and rebooted, you're good to go.
I recommend setting your device up using iCloud, as it presents the fastest and easiest way to get started, but we’ll also look at setting your new device up through iTunes. These services can locate your device using Wi-Fi, local cell towers, or GPS to provide location-specific information.
This is necessary in order to connect to your wireless carrier and Apple’s servers and activate your device.
Once you agree, Apple will set your Apple ID up on your device and ask you if you’d like to use iCloud.
This backs up your device to Apple’s servers so you can restore it any time you need without having to use a computer. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re done, and your device is ready to use! If you don’t restore through iTunes, you can set your device up as a new device and proceed to set it up the way you like on your own.
Even worse, your iOS device may refuse to install updates or snap any more photos if your handseta€™s storage is bursting at the seams. The reason: While your social apps themselves arena€™t all that large, they tend to get bloated with cached images and videos as your browse your various feeds. When you log back into Facebook, Instagram, and the like from your iPhone, youa€™ll find that their respective iOS apps have shrunk dramatically, freeing up (hopefully) tons of storage in the process. Next, tap and hold an attachment, tap More, then start tapping any photos, videos, or other attachments youa€™d like to delete. Just make sure to save any must-keep attachments before changing the Keep Messages setting, because once you do, any messages that fall outside the new a€?keepa€? window will instantly be deleted.
In the New Yorker app, for example, you can tap the Library tab, tap the Settings button, tap the Preferences tab, then enable the Auto Remove setting. And no, you cana€™t simply delete photos and clips from the Camera Roll, because doing so will delete them from your iCloud Photo Library, too. Doing so seems to give iOS a much-needed kick in the pants when it comes to optimizing your photo storage. A pop-up will ask if you want to download all the photo originals in iCloud to your iPhone; go ahead and tap Remove Originalsa€”a safe option, given that you just backed up your originals to your Mac or PC.
I had chosen to go all-in and place over 12,000 photos and 500+ videos (35 GB of data) into the service, but it hasn’t been working out. This setting dynamically downloads full-res versions of your media, thereby saving space on devices where there isn’t enough space for your full photo library. Downloading a video for impromptu viewing is basically impossible, and it’s surprisingly just as bad across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. From my experience, it seems like the device tries to keep 10% of your total storage free at all times.
Currently, the only way to fully download media is to leave the iPad on that particular file until it downloads — if I swipe to another picture or area I’ll often have to restart the download process. In this regard, a little cloud icon beside media that is not stored locally would be very helpful. I’ve run a few tests, and files start to play within three seconds of tapping on them, regardless of size. I have high quality versions of my most recent photos on all of my devices, and I can access media from as far back as 2003 as long as I’ve got a decent internet connection. I'll be able to help you figure out why Evernote isn't syncing, or recommend your favourite new RSS reader to you. If you set a weak password, someone could log into your account on the iCloud website and remotely lock or wipe your device. This happens immediately — if the device is offline, the two-minute sound will start playing the next time it comes online.

On iOS 7, you can set a phone number and message that will be displayed on the screen after the device is erased so someone can contact you if they find it.
Your iPad will show you the most common languages for the area in which you bought it, but you can tap the downward arrow icon to see all the choices. Location Services use GPS, cell-tower triangulation, and Wi-Fi router mapping to determine the approximate location of your iPad. Even if you're on 3G or LTE, your iPad wants Wi-Fi because there may be a lot of data to move around and blasting through your data cap on setup is no fun. Also free, also incredibly useful to track down your iPad if you ever lose it or have it stolen. It's anonymous and helps make Apple make better products, but if you're uncomfortable with the idea, choose Don't send. You still need to get apps and games, books, TV shows, and movies, set up your email, get iMessage and FaceTime up and running, and much much more. We've got a special, dedicated thread set up in our forums to deal with any issues you may have.
In order to use maps, geotag your photos, or use features such as Find my Friends or Find my iPhone, you must have location services enabled. Have fun! For more helpful tips, check out our full collection of tutorials by visiting our How-To category! Your social apps will, of course, eventually grow in size again, so may need to repeat the process the next time you run low on storage. Within a few minutes, most of the snapshots in the Photos app should be gone, although a few stragglers will probably remain. I’ve been taking a lot more pictures since I purchased my Sony A6000 earlier this year, and the resulting 24 MP shots are taking up a lot of room on my Mac and iOS devices — enough that I’m consistently getting storage warnings while I use them. The optimize settings were working well earlier this year, but the performance has since deteriorated. It will also prioritize downloading full versions of your most recent photos over older ones. All photos from 2010 onwards are in iCloud, and everything before then lives within Dropbox. I played a 40 MB video and a 122 MB video, and they resolved to full resolution within about five seconds (just a little after playback had started).
When someone boots the Mac, it will enter the recovery screen, display a message you’ve entered, and force someone to provide a firmware passcode you remotely set. The Erase feature should be used as a last resort — in most cases, Lost Mode and Lock should allow you to secure your data and continue remotely tracking your device. Microsoft and Google don’t provide any integrated way to track and remotely lock Windows PCs or Chromebooks. If you prefer the old-school approach, you can also set up your new iPad using iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC.
You have to look at the choices and tap one to check it before the Next button will even activate. This feature is used for turn-by-turn navigation (like Navigon, check-in games (like FourSquare), social networks (like Facebook), geo-tagging (like in the Camera app), and utilities (like Find my iPad, etc. It keeps all your data safely backed up and let you restore or easily switch to a new or additional iOS devices later.
Medium updates might add a few new features or support new devices (for example, iOS 5.1 released in March of 2012 with the new iPad). It’s recommended that you do, as the service can help you find your device if it gets lost or stolen.
If youa€™re a social maven, your social apps may be hogging several gigs of your precious iPhone storage.
So I’m opting for a hybrid system for photo and video storage that utilizes iCloud Photo Library for recent photos (the past 5 years) and Dropbox for everything else. Pictures that aren’t stored at full resolution can take anywhere from 1–10 seconds to load on LTE, and loading times that last more than a few seconds just kill the buzz when you’re trying to show vacation shots to friends.
Apple Music already has a “Make Available Offline” toggle for albums and songs, and I’d argue this control is exactly what is needed within the Photos app.
I was hesitant to do this before because I wanted to be keep the instant syncing of edits across all my devices.
What’s more, when I want to keep a video on my device, Dropbox has a dedicated “Save Video” function within the share menu of its app. Wife takes the high-Res pics, I take the iPhone ones, and the problem is keeping everything in one place available for different devices and computers. If you want to change your Apple ID password, you can change it on the My Apple ID website. Unless you have a particular need to globally disable it, you'll want to turn on the Location Services feature at this point.
This download can take place as a background event, so I can tap on the save button and go back to Safari while the video continues to download. Lost Mode also enables a location tracking history, so you can sign into the iCloud website and track the device’s movements over time.
