Step 6: Placing it in the encloserNow the software is setup the Pi just needs placing in to the box.
If you don't want to go through the steps for downloading and setup up the software you can download the image I have setup from here. Our goal in this long journey of installing ownCloud 9 on the Raspberry pi is not just installing ownCloud but also mounting an external drive for lager capacity of data storage and to be able to access it from anywhere in the world. While I have done everything I can to check this is working it should be understood that you use at your own risk.
I have trialled this for about a month now and it’s been working very well, syncing files between 2 other machines and mobile devices. Do this with caution please.Once you have selected the drive, delete any existing partition then create a new one with ext type. We do this by cross-checking the information returned from lsblk and listing the device by uuid.
Copy and paste this UUID to a text file as we will use this in the next step.We will now update the fstab file so that this device can be mounted automatically every time we restart the Raspberry Pi.
This is by far the best way to have a self hosted, secure personal cloud storage that can be accessed from anywhere in the world with internet access. If you haven’t installed Raspbian then check out my guide on how to install Raspbian via NOOBS. Now we need to get the gid, uid and the uuid as we will need to use them so the pi will remember it even if we plug it into a different USB port. We need to get the UUID of the attached external hard drive so the Pi can remember this drive even if you plug it into a different USB port. Then copy the light blue letters and numbers of the sda1 entry usually located on the bottom.
Add the following line to the bottom of the file, updating the UUID with the values you got from the above step 5.
Accessing Raspberry pi ownCloud From outside the network: open your browser and enter the WAN IP address.
Because we installed SSL for more security you might get a certificate error, simply add the certificate to your exception list to proceed.


You should be presented with a simple setup screen, Here enter a username and password to create an admin account.
In order to post comments, please make sure JavaScript and Cookies are enabled, and reload the page. If you are NOT mounting an external hard drive to the raspberry pi then you are ready to log into your ownCloud Server by entering the RPI IP address into the address bar. Also we meed to get the UUID of the attached external hard drive so the Pi can remember this drive even if you plug it into a different USB port. Add the following line to the bottom of the file, updating uid, guid and the UUID with the values we got above.
We need to use ext2 or ext4 if we want to be able to use this drive with proper file and directory permissions, which would be required by applications such as OwnCloud.After this just wait until the hard drive is fully formatted. So open the fstab file as a root using your favourite text editor, I’m using leafpad for this example. If you are interested to find out more about fstab settings, there is a good article here from the Ubuntu Community.Now save the settings and test it by running the mount -a command as root.
We will then continue to setup mounting permanently.Mounting the Hard Drive PermanentlyFirst create the directory where the hard drive will be mounted.
In any case, the HDD is 320GB so it’s still pretty decent for casual file sharing locally.
We need to repartition the hard drive to be able to use it properly with the Raspberry Pi, especially if you start using it for OwnCloud or other services that requires full Linux directory and file permissions.
