Qihoo is in the doghouse for "cheating" in official tests this year, but if you can look past the integrity issues and tweak a couple of settings, you can have a decent internet security suite for nothing. Although Qihoo (pronounced Chi-hoo) provides two products under the 360 brand - Total Security and Total Security Essentials - both are free.
Qihoo 360 Total Security offers a complete suite of modules, though not perhaps the traditional ones in an IS suite.
Another novelty of the software is that it uses multiple scanners, including the Avira and Bitdefender engines and claims the combination gives increased security. The initial scan of our 50GB file basket was very slow, taking 2 hours 15 minutes to examine 64,742 files. In our copy test, it took 13 seconds longer to copy a 1GB file between drives when there was a system scan running than without, an increase of 27 percent.
There are no AV-Test results for this year, nor from AV-Comparatives or Virus Bulletin, three key independent security software testing sites.
For example, it switched on the Bitdefender engine by default and turned off its own, increasing the levels of detection under test. These defaults can be overridden in the public version, so the program can be set up to offer the combination of features any customer wants. If you want the extra features that Total Security 2016 offers over and above a plain free antivirus product, then Qihoo isn't a bad choice. Think the oodles of storage space being offered to you by your cloud storage service is a lot? According to a report by The Next Web, while Baidu and Qihoo 360 were trying to court users by offering a whopping 1TB of free space, Tencent one-upped the game by pushing the free amount to 10TB.
Baidu and Qihoo are supposed to be traditional rivals who will be trying to better each other's offers as far as letting out space goes. There’s a small process you need to follow in order to gain the humungous 10TB of space on Tencent as well.
Of course there is always the fear of putting your data on a cloud that may not always guarantee your security, especially since it belongs to the country behind the Great Firewall. Yu Yureka Review: Micromax delivers a good, affordable 4G-enabled phablet; Should Xiaomi worry? Today another Chinese tech company Tencent has upped the game, offering a jaw-dropping 10TB worth of free storage.

We’re bringing Momentum to New York: our newest event, showcasing only the best speakers and startups. How it works: sign up for a Tencent QQ account and download the latest version of the Tencent Cloud (Weiyun) mobile app.
The promotion is ongoing, so those who want to get your hands on this staggering 10TB worth of space had better be quick. This latest move, besides being beneficial for consumers, will also likely put pressure on cloud storage services, which often give away set amounts of free storage space as an incentive for users to sign up.
Kingsoft Cloud Storage, a subsidiary of Kingsoft Group, rolled out a cloud service platform together with five core products of compute cloud, cloud storage, load balancing, cloud hard disk and database (report in Chinese).
Wang Yulin, president of the company, disclosed that more than ten enterprises have settled on the platform, including subsidiaries of Kingsoft Group, Xiaomi, and Vancl. Wang thinks that domestic cloud service market is big enough to accommodate several companies and Kingsoft enjoys advantages in security, gaming and smart devices.
According to Wang, Kingsoft’s cloud storage platform booked tens of millions yuan of revenue since its release, while Kuaipan have more than 100 million individual users and tens of millions of daily active users. Wang also disclosed that Kingsoft is in close cooperation with Xiaomi in development of the imminent Xiaomi router.
Emma Lee is Shanghai-based tech writer, covering startups and tech happenings in China and Asia in general. It’s a slickly designed suite with a modern interface which is clear and offers sufficient information and control settings to easily setup and use the software.
There’s no antispam or online storage, for example, but there is a sandbox for trying new applications, protection against browser scams and against somebody hacking your web cam and applications to clean up junk on your system and select what gets loaded when you start your system. It’s not the only IS suite to use this approach, but it has managed to choose two of the highest rated AV engines on the market, which stands it in very good stead. Bitdefender is one of the very best and fastest detection engines available, but Qihoo turns it off by default in the version it supplies publically because, as it says in its official response to the cheating claims, it has to assume users will be running on lower power computers, and its own engine is less demanding. You may be happy to do this, to get the best out of a free product, but the fact that Qihoo has seen fit to tweak its software hasn’t gone down well with the test houses. And if you do install it, you should head straight into the settings and enable the Bitdefender scanner. Well, think again because certain Chinese tech giants are offering many times the space on their services, for free.

It isn’t exactly easy to accrue all of the 1TB of data on Baidu and Qihoo at once, though. You will not end up getting the whole space together but you will keep getting top-ups as and when you use up space. However, with the aftermath of NSA and government spying, one cannot be too trustworthy of US based websites either. Click on the big blue button on Weiyun’s promo site and you will immediately receive 1TB worth of free space first. While we only ever write about products we think deserve to be on the pages of our site, The Next Web may earn a small commission if you click through and buy the product in question. After securing $20 million of Series A financing led by Russian investor Yuri Milner in this August, Kingsoft Kuaipan started to offer 100G free storage service to users, which was previously charged for 229 yuan ($37.12) per year, to beat back the battle waged by rivals, including Baidu and Qihoo 360. Again, this doesn’t matter much, if subsequent scans are quicker and the rerun of the test, surprisingly, scanned over 900 more files in less than half the time. It has cast a shadow over the honesty of the company, in a product area where trust is key. Baidu, Tencent and Qihoo 360 are all trying to lure in users with free space not in gigabytes but in terabytes.
The signing up process will take you through a bunch of cross-device registration processes in order to pile up the storage space.
It is still a risk, though, and you should be careful of what you share on these websites, despite the huge amounts of space being offered.
As the amount of space you use increases (and in turn lowering the amount of space you are left with), Tencent will top up your storage space automatically, up to a maximum of 10TB. All it needed to do was offer a choice to the user upon installation - hopefully it will do this in the next update. Signing up for Baidu is a little tricky as well, as you need to pay up a small amount on its in-house online payment platform in order to gain the 1TB space.
The table below demonstrates how it works, with the first row referring to used storage space, and the second row referring to the auto top-up amounts.
