Key features include support for the latest upstream ownCloud server release, allows users to access their data from any computer where the ownCloud client is installed, makes sharing data with other people possible, and supports automatic backups, versioning and encryption. When opening the application for the first time, you must enter the address of the ownCloud server that you wish to connect to, enter the username and password, as well as to set the local folder where the ownCloud files will be synced. At the end of the configuration process, you will be notified that your entire ownCloud account is synced to the local folder, giving you the possibility to open the respective folder or the ownCloud server in a web browser. The application resides in the system tray area and will always keep your local and remote files in sync.
In order to run the ownCloud Client application you’ll have to install the ocsync tool, as well as various Python libraries. Overall, the ownCloud Client application is the best tool to synchronize your personal ownCloud server with your computer. The best thing about ownCloud is that you can have all your files (music, pictures or whatever) with you all the time, no matter what device you use. One downside is that the interface is not mobile friendly and because the download and share links only show up on hover, these features don't work using some mobile browsers (like the stock Android browser).
Another downside I've encountered while testing ownCloud 2 is that it's kind of slow when trying to access a folder containing a large number of files (like the folder where I store all my photos).
Also, ownCloud currently lacks some features like encryption, versioning or a desktop sync tool. The latest ownCloud 2 isn't available in the official Ubuntu repositories so you must install it manually. It is beyond the scope of this document to fully describe the setup of the hosting part of running a server.
You can choose to use an external database like MySql or the more simple file based system SqLite. By default ownCloud installs with SQLite are not recommended for large ownCloud installations.
There is fuller detail about this aspect and details of how to install these prerequisites, if they are already active on your server, at this page of the official ownCloud documentation.

As an example here are some commands to install some needed components for Ubuntu and Debian using a LAMP (Apache) setup.
We are also aware that it is possible to install your ownCloud directory in different folders on your server depending on how it is set up. This section covers how to install ownCloud with the web installer and using an external database MySql. The list of three options link to instructions on installing ownCloud manually (downloading the Tar or Zip File), the Web Installer and installing ownCloud using distribution specific packages.
Make sure you have the details at hand for a Database user and Database password  and Database name.
On completion of the ownCloud Web Installer you will automatically logged into your new ownCloud server setup. Connect to the server with your server login details and copy all the unzipped files to the directory on your server you are going to use as the home for your ownCloud directory.
When we point our browser to the URL that we have linked to this web directory we will see an error that we need to fix.
This message is asking us to change the ownership setting of some of the folders on the install.
For Cpanel users to change permissions this is done in the File Manager section see this page for more help on using cPanel.
If you return to the web page where ownCloud was installed the error should be replaced with a welcome screen asking you to create an admin user with the first log in. If you just want to get started with a basic install then enter your details, click Finish setup and continue using ownCloud. If you want to change the data directory or install with MySql you can click on the Advanced link.
You can always view how much free space you have left on the server by right clicking the tray icon.
All you have to do is to select one or more folders on your PC or Mac and the application will automatically synchronize the files, allowing you to access them wherever you are.

You basically have your own Google Music server without the restrictions imposed by Google.
But it works just fine using a browser such as Firefox and further more, there are some WebDAV Android clients out there so this is not such a big issue. Due to an issue with Mac OS Unicode support, installing ownCloud Server 5.0 on Mac OS is currently not supported. If you are new to the process we would recommend a LAMP set up which involves (Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP). If you a running your own server with root access there is good help online for 'setting up a LAMP server'. This user must have read, write and execute permissions on the directory, plus read and write permissions on all the files in the directory. We will use the simple method of using the default SqLite system and FTP to upload our files.
You can do this in different ways either via a (s)ftp client, a cPanel File Manager or other command line tools.
And you can use a complete music player for this such as Amarok, Tomahawk, Banshee (through "banshee-extension-ampache" extension) and others. Some features are already in development: online text editor, task manager, encryption, a desktop sync client, Android and webOS applications and more. If this is not possible you may need to ask your hosting company or server admin to help you. If you see this you should replace it with the correct path to where you are installing ownCloud on your server.
