If you have a laptop at home, a desktop at work, and have a mobile device like a smartphone or a tablet then it can be hard work keeping all of your calendars and contacts up to date.
A quick search on the web will reveal a lot of different CalDAV and CardDAV personal information managers to choose from. The following is a guide to the process of using an Address Book in the cross platform Thunderbird email client. Back in Thunderbird, synchronize with the remote address book by right clicking select Synchronize. There are several apps available to sync your Android device contacts with those on a CardDAV compatible service like ownCloud. Enter your user details and the URL of the CardDAV address book that you want to connect to. If you are entering a normal URL you can find it in the settings of your ownCloud Contact Settings.
You may want to choose a more mature system like the Thunderbird email client to be the interface where you manage your contacts. Android does not support CalDAV by default, so we need to install an app to allow our devices to do this.
Having cloud storage these days have become a requirement, and we are spoilt for choice with what is available out there to help backup our important data, e.g. We’ve introduced Bittorrent Sync previously as a way to transfer large files anonymously but did you know that you can also use it to create your personal Cloud? Platforms Supported: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Kindle Fire. An incredibly versatile tool, ownCloud is a free, open source application that lets you build more than a Dropbox replacement to dump your data. Seafile, another open source solution, sells itself as a file syncing and online collaboration tool. Similar to OwnCloud, the aim of Cozy is to give you a way to maintain your own data using your own web apps. Platforms Supported: Images available on Virtualbox, Raspberry Pi, OpenVZ, Cubieboard2, Cubietruck. AeroFS is an open source app that is aimed at corporate users, offering collaboration tools as part of their package. Similar to SparkleShare and obvious from its name, git-annex also uses git to manage files but "without checking the file contents into git". Reproduction of materials found on this site, in any form, without explicit permission is prohibited. While PaaS services reduce many work from web-developers and have become quite popular, they remain a little bit expensive.
Unfortunately, OpenShift (OS) lacks way way behind from similar services like Engine Yard (which rocks!). OS offers a wide variety of frameworks and languages, but we just go with the out of box OwnCloud instance. I just checked how OwnCloud and Files integrate, and not how OwnCloud integrates in general with GNOME. Also what follows is my personal experience with the very unstable Fedora Rawhide (20), and I don’t think that this will be the case when F19 stable come. What you need to do, is actually to add the WebDav and CalDav to Files and Evolution respectively to sync your data. This is basically mounting my online space in Nautilus rather a sync, and editing online files in G-Files was super slow.
If you need a more flexible solution, ownCloud could be just what you’re looking for, giving you the chance to easily host and access your files from other computers.
This is not to say that you have to pay for space by signing up for different packages with ownCloud – the software is provided completely free of charge. Installing the ownCloud Server software is easy whether you have shared or personal storage. If you already have your own shared web hosting account, waiting to be put to good use, there is an online installer that can be used to get up and running.


Equally, if you are fortunate enough to have a server of your own (either a VPS or dedicated server), a .tar or Linux package file is available for easy installation. Files you upload can be organized into folders however you see fit, but ownCloud also enables you to quickly jump to files of a particular type – such as music or images – similar to smart folders in OS X. In terms of file editing, only text files that are supported as standard, but there is the option of installing third-party apps to add new features. The web interface can be used to set up user accounts so that data can be shared between groups of people, and individual users can be assigned different amounts of storage space. The admin panel of the web interface afford you control over user accounts as well as app settings. Client software is also available for iOS and Android devices, making it possible to access files on the move.
While ownCloud doesn’t quite have the polished feel of some cloud storage services, it more than makes up for this in its versatility. There is great flexibility in the fact that there are no restrictions imposed on how storage space can or should be used. A great way to make use of your webspace to share files with others or collaborate on projects. Its good but dont you think its way too complicated for a new user compared to google Drive and Dropbox?
They are open standards and are used by many applications to send and receive information to keep everything synchronized. We will cover the popular email client Thunderbird as it is cross platform and works with both CalDAV and CardDAV. These plugins will give you the ability to add a remote calendar and address book to Thunderbird. A similar approach should work for other CardDAV enabled applications.Install Thunderbird and Sogo Connector plugin as detailed in the section above.
Similarly, adding or editing your contacts in Thunderbird will trigger a sync with the ownCloud server.
Moving a contact from from a remote 'OwnCloud address book' to a local address book removes the contact from the OwnCloud server, (thus deleting it from all the other synchronized installations). If you have added, or have other address books shared with you they should also appear in your list to choose from. If you un-tick this then changes that you make on your devices will by synced back up to the server.
This area is still quite experimental and changes are being made to make it more user-friendly.
Changes you make there will be updated to your server and to any android clients that you have synced.
All you need to do is configure a folder to act as a drop-off point so you can sync all your files on all your devices running Bittorrent Sync. The program recently entered beta and it requires you to sign up to its beta program but it looks to be a solid, easy to use app to create a personal cloud within the Apple ecosystem, bypassing iTunes. Along with data storage, the app comes with a number of other features such as a way to manage your calendar, to-do lists, a document editing tool and many more. In the developers own words, "Cozy allows you to turn your server in a kind of personal Google App Engine." The developers encourage users to develop it further, hoping to connect many different services and utilities to it. This means that you will get full version history of your files as well as the other good stuff that comes with git. Fortunately OpenShift offers a developer preview plan for free, which performs better than the free plan of Heroku (at least when I tried it!).
I had done this in the past, but I think is only necessary if you are going to work with Git, something we don’t need right now. My little testing was a failure, but OwnCloud also offers its own client if you want to actually use this service. Fedora was ignoring this account and there wasn’t any kind of integration with GNOME, not in Files neither in Evolution Calendar. The likes of Dropbox, Box and Google Drive are understandably popular, but they all have limitations of one form or another.


There are a couple of approaches that can be taken for setting up the server, and which one you choose will depend on what your current web hosting situation is, or how much you are willing to pay for storage. However, you do need to have some online hosting available that you can use in conjunction with the tool. All you need to do is upload and run a script and you’ll be guided through the entire process.
These will give you more features, and in the case of the Linux package file, automated updates, but it’ll take a bit more work to get them up and running. There’s a search box available at all times so you can easily hunt down any files you’re having trouble locating manually. It’s great to be able to access online files through a web browser, but it is even more useful to be able to view and edit them whilst on the move.
There is already a built in task manager – something which is great for collaborative project as well as solo work – but there are plenty more that can be installed from the ownCloud website. This is great for teams, and might give your company a way to move to your own servers instead of relying on Dropbox for Teams to keep your documents in sync. The web interface is easy to use, and very powerful, but it always makes sense to have local copies of files as well. Opting to use a self-hosted service such as this means that it can be tailored to meet your exact needs, and can likely help you get more value out of servers and hosting accounts you already have access to. Gladinet offers a simpler solution for new users and a more mature, brandable solution for service providers with support for more cloud storage services, SAN, NAS and other local devices as well as great file server and AD integration.
See the chapter on security for the reasons why using SSL increases the security of ownCloud. These solutions forgo the use of a third-party server, ensuring that your data is for your eyes only.
The service prides itself on its fast syncing speeds, with no limit on the data transferred. This is an excellent solution if you have documents that require going through a lot of changes. The app is mainly in command line but for those who aren’t keen on this, there is an easy-to-use alternative version. By the way OS gives you  a free (private I guess) repository for working on your App source code. The good thing is, it can work with quite a variety of hosting services – even shared hosting you might already be paying for to host your personal WordPress blog. This is not entirely dissimilar to that found in Dropbox, but it is about more than just storing files. This gives you the chance to make ownCloud work just like you want, with an app store of sorts in your own hosted web app.
Rather than manually downloading  and uploading the latest versions of files, the desktop client can be used to keep a local folder synchronized with your cloud storage, just like Dropbox.
The ever-expanding range of apps is already impressive, but as ownCloud grows in popularity we can expect to see development flourish, and this is when things will start to get really exciting.
