What You See Is What You Get Element Monitoring Oracle Exadata Storage Servers by Brian Bream and Suzanne Zorn This article describes how to use Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control and command-line utilities to monitor Oracle Exadata Storage Servers. Monitoring Metrics Using the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Console Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control provides an intuitive view of Oracle Exadata status, including the status of all hardware and software components.
Note: This command produces output only if there are alerts that have not been reviewed by another administrator. Note: The CREATE THRESHOLD command creates a threshold that specifies the conditions for the generation of a metric alert. Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c provides a visual overview of the availability of the storage cells, with color-coded green and red status symbols to indicate available and unavailable, respectively (see Figure 4).
This chapter provides an overview of Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c and helps you understand its architecture and the various core components that are integrated within the product. Oracle Enterprise Manager is Oracle's integrated enterprise information technology (IT) management product line, which provides the industry's only complete, integrated, and business-driven enterprise cloud management solution. Figure 1-1 illustrates how Enterprise Manager Cloud Control offers a solution that enables you to monitor and manage the complete Oracle IT infrastructure from a single console.
Figure 1-2 shows a sample Enterprise Manager Cloud Control architecture and illustrates how these core components fit into the architecture. In Figure 1-2, the load balancer and the multiple Oracle Management Services are depicted only to indicate how a sample Enterprise Manager Cloud Control architecture would look in a large organization.
Oracle Management Agent (Management Agent) is an integral software component that is deployed on each monitored host. Oracle Management Service is a Web-based application that orchestrates with the Management Agents and the Management Plug-ins to discover targets, monitor and manage those targets, and store the collected information in a repository for future reference and analysis.
The Oracle Management Repository (Management Repository) is a storage location where all of the information collected by the Management Agent is stored.
Technically, the Oracle Management Service uploads the monitoring data it receives from the Management Agents to the Management Repository. At the time of installation, the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Installation Wizard configures the Management Repository in your existing, certified database.
The core Enterprise Manager Cloud Control features for managing and monitoring Oracle technologies, such as Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Fusion Applications, are now provided through components known as plug-ins that can be downloaded and deployed using the new Self Update feature.
Table 1-1 lists the default plug-ins that are installed on Oracle Management Service and the Management Agent by default with a new Enterprise Manager system. The Enterprise Manager Cloud Control console is the user interface that you see after you install Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. Oracle Enterprise Manager framework is enterprise-ready and is designed to manage and monitor critical business operations to ensure smooth running of enterprise data centers.
World class enterprise monitoring is about monitoring the status of your infrastructure and applications, notifying the appropriate IT staff when incidents occur, and reporting on status, history, and trends to interested parties throughout IT and the business. Oracle provides advanced, out-of-the-box application management solutions for Oracle E-Business Suite, Siebel, Peoplesoft, JD Edwards, and Fusion Applications. Enterprise Manager also offers advanced management capabilities for managing custom applications, integrations, and extensions. There are two ways to monitor Web site user experience: using real traffic from real customers or using synthetic traffic (traffic artificially created by software to mimic the load that the Web site would be expected to receive).

Learn what's new in Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g, and how you will benefit by learning to use it. For home use and learning purposes, it’s very common to create a new Oracle database using the Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA). Without an agent, what you get with a single database is the Database Control version of Enterprise Manager. What is definitely new for OEM release 11g is the incorporation of Oracle WebLogic Server (WLS). With Oracle Corporation having acquired BEA, that license key migration process is dead and gone, so if you have an existing WLS installation, your upgrade path is going to include licensing of WLS from Oracle. Yet another key aspect of Oracle using WebLogic Server can be found in application management. What’s in it for you to learn how to install and use the Grid Control version of Enterprise Manager? Oracle 12c now introduces multitenant architecture featuring pluggable databases, which makes it easy to consolidate your databases on to the cloud, deliver high density of schema based consolidation without making changes to application, increase utilization of resources, and rapidly provision and clone  database for various purposes by lowering down of Infrastructure & administrative costs. Fewer Patches and upgrades – With Oracle 12c, you don’t need to apply a patch, patch set, or product updates to multiple databases separately. Fewer Standby Databases – With Oracle 12c, you don’t need to ship and apply redo logs separately on each standby.  You can apply the redo logs at container level and every pluggable database in a container is fully protected from outages and uses can also use their standby pluggable databases for reporting purpose.
DBAs can still use data integration tools such as Data Pump and GoldenGate to migrate data to pluggable databases. Oracle multitenant is fully compatible with existing database options and features such as Oracle Real Application Cluster, Active Data Guard, Real Application Testing and Recovery Manager. Consolidating Database – Many pluggable databases into a single multitenant container database by sharing its memory and background processes and reduce patching and upgrade activities by increasing server virtualization with high density database consolidation per server. Rapid provisioning and cloning – You can plug and unplug the database and move database rapidly across the different containers. A problem I have with the 'pluggable' database, is that is shares an SGA - that is library cache, and buffer cache. I have asked several people, including Oracle instructors the following question, but have not yet received a definitive, convincing answer. By using pluggable database you are lowering down of Infrastructure & administrative costs. For practicing and learning OEM 12c Cloud Control, this is the quickest way to get Cloud Control up and running. Each storage server is a separate target in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, and the Oracle Exadata storage servers are grouped together for collective monitoring of all storage.
With Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, administrators can determine the status at a glance, and then drill down to the affected components for more information. Oracle Enterprise Manager creates business value from IT by leveraging the built-in management capabilities of the Oracle stack for traditional and cloud environments, enabling customers to achieve unprecedented efficiency gains while dramatically increasing service levels. They are not a prerequisite or a requirement for an Enterprise Manager system installation. It is responsible for monitoring all of the targets running on those hosts, communicating that information to the middle-tier Oracle Management Service, and managing and maintaining the hosts and its targets. Oracle Management Service also renders the user interface for Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. It consists of objects such as database jobs, packages, procedures, views, and tablespaces. In addition to these default plug-ins, you can optionally install other plug-ins available in the software kit (DVD, downloaded software bundle, and so on).

Oracle Enterprise Manager provides rich monitoring features as a foundation for monitoring all components of your IT infrastructure (Oracle and non-Oracle) as well as the applications and services that are running on them.

Oracle Application Server and Oracle HTTP Server, let’s say, served their purpose back in the day, but now we have something better and more robust.
A database may use only a fraction of server hardware capacity and others might have overloaded. The new pluggable architecture only requires you to perform a backup at the multitenant container level. All these can be applied at the container level and not at each individual pluggable database level. This gives the flexibility of creating new patched or upgraded containers and selectively unplugging database from older container and plugging database into a new patched or upgraded container. The Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control console makes it easy to see the status at a glance, and provides an easy way to drill down to get more detailed information. If you do not have a load balancer, then the Management Agents communicate directly with the Oracle Management Services.
Oracle Management Services is deployed to the Oracle middleware home (middleware home), which is the parent directory that contains the Oracle WebLogic Server home, the Oracle Management Service home, the Management Agent home, the plug-in home, the Java Development Kit (JDK), the Oracle Management Service instance base directory, the Oracle Web tier directory, the Oracle common directory, and other relevant configuration files and directories. Because data is stored in the Management Repository, it can be shared between any number of administrators accessing the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. For example, when a new version of Oracle Database is released, you can simply download and deploy the latest Oracle Database plug-in, which will include management support for the latest release. All the systems and services including enterprise application systems, databases, hosts, middleware application servers, listeners, and so on, are easily managed from one central location. With a next-generation user interface, it provides a rich, intuitive console that can be customized to suit different roles. These features enable IT to proactively monitor and resolve issues by business priority, implement operational best practices for monitoring, and provide consistent, high quality service in support of business goals. Oracle Enterprise Manager's management capabilities include user experience management, performance management, change and configuration management, patching, provisioning, testing, integrated diagnostics, and automatic tuning. With Application Replay or Real Application Testing you can reduce your testing time by more than 80%. A disabled item on the DBCA window indicates that no management service agent was found, and that is a key piece in getting DBCA to recognize that Enterprise Manager is even a possibility. With an agent (along with other components external to the database), your new database can be managed by Enterprise Manager and the repository can live elsewhere.
The second step is to install an Oracle WebLogic Server for the management service, and the final step is to install a complete Enterprise Manager system including an agent and an OMS. There are other products where you still have a choice in terms of which J2EE compliant application server you can use. First, getting smart on Enterprise Manager Grid Control has payoff in terms of being able to manage multiple databases from one interface. In several industry reports (going back several years before the acquisition by Oracle), WLS was the leading application server. The DBA team must manage the Resources, Database files, Security, backups and accounts and so on of each database separately. That means you will have fewer backups to manage as each pluggable database backup with container. Consolidating the multiple pluggable databases into a multitenant contain can reduce the amount of patching and upgrade activities.
Customers who are on Oracle 10g R1 and earlier can use tools such as Data Pump and GoldenGate to migrate data to Oracle 12c. While deploying the Oracle Management Service, the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Installation Wizard installs Oracle WebLogic Server if it does not already exist in your environment.

Oracle Enterprise Manager framework also has advanced capabilities such as self-update where key components such as target plug-ins, compliance policies, and deployment procedures can be updated automatically as newer versions become available.
Oracle Enterprise Manager helps customers to accelerate the adoption of virtualization and cloud computing to optimize IT resources, improve hardware utilization, streamline IT processes, and reduce costs. Finally, all of the on-premise instrumentation can be connected in real-time to My Oracle Support for complete communication between Oracle and customers. Typically, they test the performance and availability of business-critical services in the infrastructure as part of SLM. They provide the most efficient, optimized and highest quality testing for validating application and database infrastructure changes. However, before that can even take place, there is a good bit of setup outside of DBCA done beforehand. For what it’s worth, WLS used to operate via a license key, and your accessible features were driven or controlled by this file. APEX, as an example, offers several choices, but by and large, it appears all roads (with respect to web servers supporting Oracle products) lead to WLS. The idea or concept of installing an agent, which is used to monitor and report to a centralized management server, is used in quite a few other products outside the world of Oracle. The illustration below shows the architecture you’re likely to encounter in a basic setup. It manages many databases as one and retains the isolation, resource control of each database. The alert is triggered by two consecutive measurements (occurrences=2) over the threshold values. There is a slight to negligible hit on performance due to the presence of the agent, but that’s not any different than running Database Control. Values of one second over the threshold trigger a warning alert; values of two seconds over the threshold trigger a critical alert.
If you are comfortable with the overhead of AWR on a local database, you won’t mind the presence of an agent. Comparison: Monitoring Storage Server Availability Both the CLI and Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c can be used to monitor storage server availability.
Using Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c to compare metrics across multiple servers. The distributed CLI utility, dcli, can be used to execute commands across multiple servers on Oracle Exadata. However, it is much more complex to manually aggregate statistics reported in its command output and make comparisons across multiple storage servers.
Final Thoughts Oracle Enterprise Manger Cloud Control 12c provides easy-to-use, intuitive monitoring of Oracle Exadata Storage Servers. Components include database servers (also called compute nodes), Oracle Exadata Storage Servers (also called storage cells), Oracle's Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Switch 36 switches, and Exadata Smart Flash Cache. Status information is visually displayed, making it easy to pinpoint problems and then drill down for more detailed information. Monitoring Technologies Oracle Exadata uses several technologies to enable the monitoring of its components. In addition, Oracle Enterprise Manger Cloud Control provides capabilities for easily comparing metrics across multiple storage servers. These technologies include Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (Oracle ILOM), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). The CLI (cellcli command and dcli utility) can be useful for scripts and creating processes that need to be repeated. This command can be used to display detailed information about the metrics that are available for a storage cell. Oracle ILOM is integrated service processor hardware and software that is preinstalled on Oracle servers, including the storage and database servers in Oracle Exadata.

The service processor runs its own embedded operating system and has a dedicated Ethernet port to provide out-of-band server monitoring and management capabilities. It is of metricType Instantaneous, it is associated with objectType CELL, and it has a measurement unit of percentage. Oracle ILOM can be accessed via a browser-based web interface or a command-line interface, and it also provides an SNMP interface and IPMI support.

In Oracle Exadata, the database and storage servers contain built-in IPMI support in Oracle ILOM. The cellcli command is used for management and monitoring of individual Oracle Exadata storage cells.
In addition, the dcli (distributed CLI) utility can be used to execute scripts and commands, such as those for shutting down compute nodes, across multiple storage cells from a single interface.
This system management platform provides integrated hardware and software management (see Figure 1).
Its hardware view includes a schematic of storage cells, compute nodes, and switches, as well as hardware component alerts. Its software view includes software alerts as well as information about performance, availability, and usage organized by databases, services, and clusters. However, Oracle Exadata can be configured to send SNMP alerts to other SNMP managers on the network. Monitoring Architecture of Oracle Enterprise Cloud Control Before using Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c with Oracle Exadata, an Oracle Management Agent and Oracle Exadata plug-in must be installed on every Oracle Exadata database server (see Figure 2).
This agent monitors software targets, such as the database instances and Oracle Clusterware resources, on the database servers.
The plug-in enables monitoring of other hardware components in Oracle Exadata, including the storage servers, switches, and power distribution units. On the storage servers, the CELLSRV process provides the majority of Oracle Exadata storage services and is the primary storage software component. The Management Server (MS) process receives the metrics data from CELLSRV, keeps a subset of metrics in memory, and writes to an internal disk-based repository hourly. In addition, the MS process can generate alerts for important storage cell hardware or software events. The Restart Server (RS) process is used to start up and shut down the CELLSRV and MS processes.
The primary components of Oracle Enterprise Manger Cloud Control 12c are the Oracle Management Service, the Oracle Management Repository, and the Cloud Control Console. The Oracle Management Service communicates with the agents on the managed targets and stores information in the Oracle Management Repository.
