This is not an article about presenting a comparison between the three big main offerings (DropBox, SkyDrive and Google Drive). However some have noted that it is difficult to download the desktop program for Google Drive direct from Google’s webpage. While there seems to be little news on an app for Linux, there is this tutorial on how to access your Google Drive on Nautilus in Ubuntu. Update: I found this nice post with pretty charts and pictures if you want to compare and see what is the best online storage solution for you. My name is Stephanie Krishnan and I'm passionate about the way that open source software and its community can help small businesses and individuals with their productivity and lives.
So, I thought it would be nice to cover the different kinds of computer storage devices that are available as well.
Knowing what kinds of storage devices are available can keep you from using up too much space on your computer’s hard drive. Floppy Disk – They are plastic square disks, usually with a silver or black sliding piece going across the top.
Removable Hard Drive – This is a disk drive in which a plastic or metal case surrounds the hard drive. Internet Hard Drive – This one is a service on the Internet that provides storage space to computer users. Flash Drive – This a storage device that comes in many colors and has a stick shape to it.
PC Card – This is a thin credit card size device that fits into a PC card slot, usually on a notebook computer.
Storage Tape – This one is a magnetically coated ribbon of plastic, capable of storing large amounts of data at a very low cost. Miniature Mobile Storage Media – This is used mostly with handheld computers and digital cameras. Memory Stick – This is a rectangular shaped disk that is used mostly with digital cameras and notebook computers. Micro Drive – This is a square disk that has 1 GB of space and is used with digital cameras and handheld computers.

TweetGoogle has made it clear for years that they’re determined to be the number one name in the cloud storage game. While iCloud gives 5 GB of storage for free to all Apple device owners, Google Drive’s basic service has provided 15 GB for free since May of 2013. Google Drive isn’t only about storage; it’s also where Google productivity apps live, and it’s closely linked to its photo sharing-storage tools and Gmail, all of which share the same pool of available online storage. With this move, Google makes it much more accessible and attractive premium services related to Google Drive winking at those users who searched for a cloud storage solution with plenty of space but without having to pay crazy. The cloud storage space has become extremely competitive in recent years, with services popping up from independent firms like Box and Mega, as well as major tech firms like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and of course Apple.
The sharp drop in Google Drive prices is a sign of strong competition in the services sector of online storage, where each platform trying to convince users to store their files in it rather than a rival.

For comparison, the popular cloud service Dropbox, which is used by over 200 million people, offers a free 2 GB only. To be fair, Google’s Drive pricing was already lower than the other most popular service Dropbox, with a 100GB plan costing $4.99 per month vs.
I prefer Google Drive over others, it is more stable and synchronizes the updated files instantly.
In 2012, more than 1.7 million jobs in the field of cloud computing remained unoccupied, according to analysts firm IDC. Cloud marketing has the ability to drastically change the ways in which they reach and engage their audience, particularly with regard to distributing and storing mission-critical data. More and more companies encourage their employees to work on their devices, thus reducing the cost of computer equipment, but also increase the cost to maintain licenses and safety. Despite the inclination to wait until all of the cloud’s kinks have been worked out, holding off on cloud initiatives until the industry matures won’t guarantee success. The software industry is undergoing major changes by trends such as cloud, SaaS, mobile technology and the “consumerization of IT”. The cost of online storage continues to drop as Microsoft, Google and Amazon race to build out enormous online data storehouses. The chart above, reprinted from Gizmodo, compares prices and features of online file storage services from Dropbox, Google, and Microsoft with more or less similar services from Amazon, Box, Apple, and MediaFire. There are differences between the various services and you may well find something about one that is important to you and makes it the best choice.
OneDrive’s biggest advantage over the other services is only slowly being recognized: when you click on an Office file on the OneDrive website, it opens in an online version of the Office program, able to be edited with controls that closely resemble the computer version of the programs. Device integrated into the computer that reads and writes data on the hard disk inside the case.
Rigid magnetic medium that is mounted on a central axis; its surface is divided into tracks and sectors on which data are written. Device that converts the electric energy powering it into mechanical energy so that disks can rotate at several thousand revolutions per minute.
Device that converts the electric energy powering it into mechanical energy to move the actuator arm according to the computer’s instructions. Cloud storage is one way to tackle this, with the added option of synchronising files between different computers and devices.

They can also help keep your computer’s hard drive from crashing, along with keeping it running at top speed.
The only difference is that you can write on this disc and erase it as many times as you want. This service offers about 25 MB of space, but it could be more, depending on the service type. They are very small in size, but they can hold anywhere between 256 MB and 3 GB of material on them.

Google has announced a reduction in the price of their subscriptions to the service cloud storage, Google Drive, thanks to a series of infrastructure improvements.
If a strong storage space is a key argument in choosing a service, the price is equally important. All of them are mature services, each with its  own strengths and weaknesses, but Microsoft is offering something that literally cannot be compared when it comes to value for money.
The price reduction last week (actually ten times as much storage for the same price) came along with some nice security improvements, including the ability to wipe out the Dropbox folder from a lost or stolen laptop when it comes online. The Office programs are tightly knit together with OneDrive, and Microsoft has made OneDrive and Office available on every platform that matters – computer (PC or Mac), tablet, and phone.
There are constant improvements to the online versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote for editing, sharing and collaboration – now including simultaneous collaboration, allowing you to work with someone else on the same file at the same time from two different devices. The business version of OneDrive is improving but continues to lag behind the consumer OneDrive in stability, features, and the number of platforms where it can be used. Older computers used tape and tape drives, but even today, some people still back their systems up with storage tape. So, the next time you want to save something that takes up a large amount of space on your hard drive, think twice about it and consider using one of these storage devices instead.
Plus, if you decided you don't like our newsletters (don't worry, you'll love them), unsubscribing is fast and easy. In addition, Dropbox offers corporate tariff plan: unlimited space for groups of 5 people and costs $ 15 per user per month. But that extra $3 per-month savings equates out to $36 per year, making it even more attractive. Last week Microsoft updated the Android OneDrive app with a glimpse of the future: the app allows access to either set of OneDrive folders and makes it reasonably clear which one is which.
It’s a nice website, but I want those shared folders right here where I can see them with my other files. One of these devices could save you a lot of space on your hard drive and keep your system running at its best! A $100 a year of paid iCloud service meanwhile only nets iCloud users a total of 55 GB of total storage, and Dropbox users 100 GB. Google also has the advantage of its new fleet of Chromebooks, Chromeboxes and Android devices, all of which have Google apps installed. It will be helpful if Microsoft continues to bring the two services together in a way that reduces confusion.
Dropbox has always synced shared folders, and there have been rumors for months that Microsoft would step up with a similar feature. An external tape drive can be purchased separately as well, but those are even harder to find. These options do not eliminate the option of free storage that will remain in effect for all users with an account on the Google platform.
Google’s lower cloud storage prices will also entice more people to buy Chromebooks, which will in turn eat away at yet another part of Microsoft’s business. Box’s Business plan offers users 1,000 GB of storage for $15 per month per user, but there must be a minimum of three users on the plan, bringing the minimum price to $45.
