Open the Settings app, tap iCloud, and tap Storage & Backup to view how much space you have left in your iCloud account. To use less space for backups, look at the apps in the list under Next Backup Size and disable apps you don’t think need to be backed up.
If you have an old device you no longer use and it appears in this list, you can tap it and tap Delete Backup to delete the entire backup. Install another app like Google+, Dropbox, or Flickr that can automatically back up your photos and have the app start backing up your photos.
You may also want to disable Camera Roll backups if you do this, as your photos are being backed up to a different service anyway.
Tap an app under Documents & Data on the Manage Storage screen to view the files taking up space. I ignored the omission in that related "No iCloud isn't backing them up" article, but this article is brand new.
DID YOU KNOW?Thanks to a little bit of mathematical serendipity, -40 on the Fahrenheit scale is equivalent to -40 on the Celsius scale–though we hardly need to agree on temperature scales to agree that -40 on either is rather chilly.

All documents created in iOS 8 will be safely stored until Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite is released this Autumn. You will now see a Finder-like display of all the files and folders stored in iCloud Drive. This new feature in Applea€™s latest Mac operating system promises to free up precious storage space.
Editor's note: This article has been updated to include the Purgable feaure, email attachements in the Optimized Storage section, and verified information regarding iCloud Drive storage usage. Applea€™s laptops rely on flash storage, and prices really shoot up if you want more local storage (the actual storage in your computer)a€”if the model you want offers an upgrade in the first place. This bar graph has changed a bit from the one in OS X El Capitan, which provided a color-coded key below the bar to tell you how your storage is being allocated. If you look closely at the screenshot above, you can see a small white-with-gray-stripes section. Whata€™s cool about this option is that ita€™s basically like the Recently Deleted folder of iOSa€™s Photos app.
Unlike the iOS Photo appa€™s Recently Deleted folder, the files in the Maca€™s Trash arena€™t labeled with how many days are remaining before deletion.
If you decide to turn this feature off, you will notice that therea€™s no way to do so in this interface. If you decide you want to turn off Empty Trash Automatically, you can do so in the Finder preferences. This is an interface you can use to sift through your files and figure out which ones to delete or move to another storage medium. In Large Files and Downloads, if you move your cursor over a file, you can then click on the X button to delete the file, or click the magnifying glass to see the file in the Finder. If you use the free version of Dropbox, then you likely already know that you only get a paltry 2GB of storage to use.
Step 1: Log into your Dropbox account, right-click on the file or folder you want to delete, and click Delete.
Step 3: Now, you should see the file or folder that you thought you deleted as a grayed out item in the list. Your list of search results will show all the items in the iTunes Store that match your search.

Unlike other software, iPhone apps only work on devices running the iOS, not on Windows or the Mac OS.
If you accidentally delete an app--even a paid app--you're not stuck buying another copy.
You're writing an email and need to attach a file to it, perhaps an office or iWork document, or maybe a PDF or text file. Thanks to document provider extensions you can also attach files from other popular online storage services, and from an enterprise storage system if you have one. For the document provider extension to be available, you first have to download the host app from the App Store. Device backups, photos, documents, iCloud email, and other bits of data all share that space. For example, you might disable backups for apps like Pocket, Twitter, and Evernote because those apps automatically sync their data online anyway. By default, iOS 7 uses both Photo Stream to sync the most 1000 recent photos between all your devices and also backs up your device’s Camera Roll, which contains any photos stored locally. It will back up your photos to a separate pool of storage — your Google Drive, Dropbox, or Flickr storage.
They count toward your iCloud storage, so you may want to delete any files you don’t care about.
If it’s not set up, you can visit the iCloud website, open the Mail app in your browser, and delete emails with the web interface. Apple currently offers three paid plans — an additional 10 GB for $20 per year, 20 GB for $40 per year, or 50 GB for $100 per year. Learn how to use iCloud Drive in iOS 8, and Macworld Yosemite when it launches this Autumn. Many other apps (such as Byword) already use iCloud for storing documents, and we expect them to be immediately compatible with iCloud Drive. We also think the monthly charge is pretty stingy, and we’d be happier if that 20GB was the free option. The new Optimized Storage feature in macOS Sierra is designed to help free up precious storage space on your Mac. Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud Drive storage per Apple ID, so you may want more to take full advantage of Optimized Storage.
In Sierra, the color-coded key is gone, but if you move your cursor over the colored sections, you can see what each section represents. This is what Apple calls Purgeable, and it indicates that these are really old files that you can probably archive, save to the cloud, or delete in order to free up storage space.
First, leta€™s go over the choices in the Recommendations window that appears in the main section. Herea€™s why you might want to upgrade iCloud: Your iCloud Drive is used as long-term storage for your original files and full-resolution photos and videos, which can be downloaded to your Mac when you need them. When you click on the Store in iCloud button, you have the choice to save files from the Desktop and Documents folders in iCloud.
If you like to watch TV shows and movies from iTunes, you may not realize that the videos you have already watched are just sitting on your Mac. Ita€™s more efficient than opening a bunch of Finder windows and looking at the files that way.
If you sync your iOS device to your Mac, iTunes keeps a few olders backups, in case you want to restore to a previous point in history.
None of the Apple apps that come with Sierra are shown here, though App Store apps do appear. It will be updated as OS updates become available and when Apple officially releases macOS Sierra in the fall. We give you the scoop on what's new, what's best and how to make the most out of the products you love. What happens when you seemingly delete something, it disappears, but you still don’t have the extra space that should’ve come up when you got rid of that stuff from your Dropbox account?

First, you can search for an app by typing its name into the search field at the top right corner of the iTunes window. You may disable Camera Roll backups if you’re using another method to back up your photos. This is a confusing system, which is why Apple has announced they’re simplifying things with a single iCloud Photo Library that contains all your photos in iOS 8.
You’ll have a backup copy of your photos stored online, but you get to keep all that precious iCloud storage for other functions.
Be careful when doing this, as you could delete important documents and other files you might want to keep. This is in addition to your 5 GB of free space, so the plans actually give you 15, 25, and 55 GB of storage space. For anybody with a Windows PC (which is a lot of people) it's a no-brainer since the synced photos just show up on your PC without automatically eating your disk space. When you files are saved to Documents In The Cloud, you will be able to access the file directly in iCloud Drive folder in Mac OS X. New documents created in iCloud Drive compatible apps are stored in iCloud Drive automatically. Double-clicking a file compatible with an iCloud Drive app (such as Pages) opens it inside the iCloud App in Safari (where you can make edits). The nature of iCloud Drive is that it offers direct access to files already saved in iCloud.
For example, the light blue section next to the yellow System section in the screenshot above is for Other Users.
The idea here is that since the email attachment is being stored on an email server, there's no need to keep it on your Mac. Also notice that when you click on the Review Files button, ita€™s the same as selecting Documents in the left column. When you place a cursor over an app, you get the delete and Show in Finder icons, like the ones that appear in Documents. Mostly, this view is for apps youa€™ve installed on your own from the internet or from external media. Dropbox hides it from you, storing it in a separate folder just in case you ever want to restore that item. Instead of having to use the edit menu, as detailed below for iPhone, simply use the attachment button to save yourself some time. When you disable backups for an app, the data will be deleted from your iCloud storage online and won’t be part of future backups. You can simply get the attachment from the server again, though if you've deleted the email completely, the attachment is gone, too.
Once you delete those files from that special folder, then you’ll receive the space savings you were looking for. The homepage of the App Store features lots of apps, but you can find even more either by clicking on the links on the right side of the homepage or by clicking the arrow in the App Store menu at the top of the page. I tried to delete several apps this way, and the apps were still there, even after I restarted the computer.
You can click that to go to the homepage of the App Store.SearchTo search for a specific app, or a general type of app, enter your search term in the search bar in the top right and press Return or Enter.
You may need to sign in to your iTunes account (or create one, if you don't have one) in order to complete the purchase. For security reasons, you still can't go wandering through the file system, but now you attach any file into any email from any storage provider app, including iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and more.
So ita€™s unclear if this delete method also removes all of the files the apps installs during the installation, a longtime pet peeve.
