When you create an Apple ID for the first time, it asks you to enter a valid email address for it. If you’re new to the Mac platform and have never purchased anything from the iTunes Store before, then you’ll need to set up an Apple ID.
You’ll be prompted to enter some basic information such as name, address and data of birth, as well as set up a password and some security questions. To begin using iCloud, sign in with your Apple ID (it will already be signed in if you just created your Apple ID) and you’ll be prompted if you’d like to use iCloud’s services as well as Find My Mac.
All of these features can be enabled and disabled through System Preferences by toggling the checkbox for each one. The great thing about the iCloud preference pane is that when you enable one of the services it automatically sets it up so you don’t need to. Calendars is also a feature that’s been around since .Mac but just like contacts, it was heavily updated to new server-based technologies rather than the more unreliable syncing service it previously used. As you hover the cursor over the calendar you wish to share, you’ll see a “share” icon appear. You can enter multiple email addresses and you can modify whether that person can read and write to the calendar, or just read it, by clicking the down arrow next to their address. With the Reminders app, you can ensure your to-do list is always up to date, and the Reminders app in OS X is very capable.
Notes is now a completely separate app in OS X and looks almost identical to Notes for iOS. Any bookmarks you add to Safari are automatically pushed to all of your other devices and Macs that are signed in to iCloud.
Whenever you have an open tab or window in Safari, iCloud syncs what the address is and makes it available to any of your iCloud devices. If you’re a Reading List user, a feature of Safari that can temporarily save web pages for offline access to read later, then iCloud will also sync your reading list to all your iCloud devices automatically. If you do have an iPhone then Photo Stream is the perfect way of syncing photos from your iPhone to your Mac since you don’t even need to connect them together. Using any number of iCloud-enabled apps, or within Mountain Lion, you have the ability to save a file directly to iCloud.
However, if you were to do the same with Pages, you can access it using either OS X or iOS, since the app is available for both platforms.
This service is one that’s often overlooked simply because it requires a lot of configuration to work.
Back to My Mac on a basic level is simply a way of always being able to access your Mac that’s at home or in the office over the internet. For a service that’s of little benefit to most users, the time and knowledge needed to ensure things like ports are forwarding, NAT is traversing, and all these other bits of technical jargon make it a service that is probably best left alone.
Just like Find My iPhone, iCloud is also able to let you track your Mac should it go missing. Since it’s a service that requires knowing your location, it has to be explicitly turned on - that’s why there’s two options when setting up iCloud for the first time.
Tip: If you enable Find My Mac, ensure you have a very strong password and security credentials only you will know. With the release of iOS 5 comes iCloud, which is Apple’s answer to Google’s cloud-based backup service for their Android devices. Before we start of with the instructions on how to set it up and consequently move on to the features at hand, we’ll just quickly tell you what the service has installed for you. Tap Storage & Backup and you will be taken to a page showing you the total storage space you have access to and what is left of it. One of the major appeals of iCloud, especially when compared to Google’s cloud backup, is the availability of your cloud storage as a web portal via a computer. To set up preferences for your account on the iCloud portal, simply click on the username on the top right corner of the browser and a window similar to the above screenshot will appear.
If you want a clean start and a fresh new backup of your pictures, you can click Advanced and select Reset Photo Stream that will remove all pictures previously backed up on iCloud. Other options include a remote lock that sets a password lock on the phone that you specify from the portal.
You can also share your reminders or calendar events with other iOS 5 users as well and they can edit the lists. Your on-the-go Contacts list can now stay synced with your iDevice and you can easily edit or add contacts without having to plug your phone into the computer. Hitting the cog wheel here will bring up a list of options that you can play around with, such as, how to sort contacts, print their details, refresh (in case changes were made on your phone) etc. It actually might, since this will be backing up all your selected data using your data plan.
If using iCloud means all my devices will have the same content, then I don’t want it. AddictiveTips is a tech blog focused on helping users find simple solutions to their everyday problems. You can complete the steps in this tutorial in a different order, but the order shown below is the most logical. 4.After the iCloud software is installed, the screen asks what apps you want to allow to store files on iCloud Drive. 6. After you log in, you will notice that all the items below have locks on them showing you have not used or enabled them before. 7.Here, Apple is showing the the cell phone number to which it will send the code I need to log in. 9.Now, you are at the main screen where you can set your language, add a photo, and set the time zone. Apple provides a tool to let you manage iCloud and how it syncs with Windows. There are five checkboxes available that let you choose to sync email, contacts, and calendar items with Outlook, and keep your browser bookmarks and iCloud Photo Stream synced. Checking the Mail, Contacts, or Calendars & Tasks checkboxes adds iCloud as an additional account in Outlook.

With a little cleanup to weed out any duplicates the contacts and calendar added to Outlook work fine. You can clean up data to free up space in iCloud. The iCloud Storage section lets you see at a glance how much space you are currently using, and how much is still available.
If the free 5GB from Apple isn't enough, you can purchase more iCloud storage space. There is a button to "Buy More Storagea€¦" at the upper right. If you haven't already set up iCloud on your Windows PC, download the iCloud Control Panel for Windows and get started.
PCWorld helps you navigate the PC ecosystem to find the products you want and the advice you need to get the job done. But if you have 2 iCloud email accounts associated with different Apple IDs, you can easily change the older email id to the new one. Once this is done, it will be assigned as your primary mail account and it can’t be changed.
Make a note that, when you click the option “Delete Account”, the content stays in the cloud. However, you can change your Apple ID to any other mail address, as long as it is not in use as an Apple ID.
It originally started life as MobileMe (which started out as .Mac, which started out as iTools) as a paid-for email service and method to keep more than one Mac in sync with regards to certain data such as calendars and contacts. The main difference is that iCloud is predominantly a free service that provides a 5GB account, with the option to pay an annual subscription to increase this, depending on the space required. The reason is that not everyone can sign up, you have to be using at least one Apple device that’s iCloud compatible.
If you’ve ever purchased anything from the App Store or iTunes, you already have an Apple ID. You can specify if you’d like to create a new email address with iCloud or if you already have an email address you’re happy to continue using. You will also be able to use this for any iTunes or app purchases you might like to make in the future. The great thing about this preference pane is that when you enable one of the services it automatically sets it up so you don’t need to.
If you already had an Apple ID or just created one but opted to still use an existing email address, you can still use an iCloud email address if you wish.
What this means is that any person you add to Contacts in OS X, their details will remain in sync across any devices you also use iCloud.
This sharing isn’t limited to just reading the calendar either, you can share calendars with other users who can also make changes.
Select this and then enter the email address of the person you wish to share the calendar with (just remember they need to also be an iCloud member). It works in the same way as Calendar and you can even share reminder lists in the same way too. If you often find yourself switching between Macs or Mac and iOS device and would like an easier way of continuing reading a web page without having to enter the address again, this is how to do it. For example, if you were reading this on your Mac and decided to switch to an iPad, you could simply open Safari, tap on iCloud Tabs and then see what pages were currently open on your Mac. Again, just like with Safari Tabs, it requires no interaction and means your content is always available.
Just launch iPhoto or Aperture and all your photos will be there and downloaded from your Photo Stream automatically. Now, whether or not iCloud has the best implementation of file syncing, for those users who are fairly new to technology then it seems quite a simple solution. Add to this that services such as Dropbox and to a certain extend, iCloud’s Documents in the Cloud feature, then it is almost redundant (it’s not even listed as part of iCloud’s features).
It works just like a network connection to a server, except when you’re signed in to iCloud then the Mac will always appear under the Shared tab in the Finder. If you would like to look further into Back to My Mac then Apple has an excellent setup guide that you can follow. What’s more, you can even remotely lock and wipe your Mac if you think it’s fallen into the wrong hands.
The only thing worse than misplacing a Mac is if someone is able to gain access to your iCloud account and remotely wipe the Mac! I use iCloud for my personal email as well as contacts and calendar services all the time and have done since the days of iTools.
Apple’s older web based services have been sketchy so far and while general notion may be the same for iCloud as well, the features and service being offered is actually very impressive. Documents & Data is the option to back up documents made on Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Not only can you access the above laid out apps and the content backed up in them, you also have the ability to edit the data or content from within this portal. You may change the display picture associated with your account, along with the choice of selecting a different Language and Time Zone.
This service not only locates your device for you, but also enables you to send a message to your phone that displays as an unavoidable popup with an alarming tone – highly useful for times when you cannot find your phone, especially if it was set to silent mode. Remote Wipe is a drastic measure to resort to for saving your data from getting into the wrong hands, as it will wipe the entire contents of your iPhone. This web-based app looks like it takes its cue from the new Reminders app mixing with the old Calendar app. This would be particularly useful for frequent travelers, users who work with random, public computers, and those who are mostly on the go. You can not only view the documents that you have backed up, but it also offers the ability to edit existing ones or create new documents from scratch, which can then be synced across your iDevices. For now, the service seems well thought out and stable, based on our test run in Addictive Labs. I have a single Macbook, with almost 400GB of music NOT purchased from apple in itunes, thousands of ebooks NOT purchased from apple and photos and documents not in apple apps.

Just have to be sure to back ur phone up before you restore from his so you can go back and restore to ur phone again !! We review the best desktop, mobile and web apps and services out there, in addition to useful tips and guides for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

Below the checkboxes is a display indicating how much iCloud storage space you're using along with a button to manage it. I can add a new contact on my iPad, or ask Siri to set up a meeting for me from my iPhone, and those updates will automatically populate to Outlook after a few minutes.
For Bookmarks, the only option is whether to sync bookmarks from Internet Explorer or Safari--sorry Firefox and Chrome users. You can click the "Manage" button to get more details and either free up or purchase more space.
But, I appreciate knowing that new calendar events, contact items, and pictures are kept in sync between my iPhone, iPad, and Windows PC. Before we tell you how to change your iCloud email, it is important to understand about them first.
This meant you could add a contact to one Mac and it would appear on another Mac or iOS device if you were signed in. If you’re running OS X Lion or Mountain Lion then you can sign up very easily through System Preferences. Simply sign in with your existing Apple ID information (this will be the email address and password you use for making iTunes or app purchases) and you’ll be prompted to create a new iCloud account.
So if you have an iOS device as well as your Mac then as soon as you add a contact to either, it will appear on the other device. It’s a feature that has no configuration, no customisation but it’s an example of a feature that genuinely makes life that little bit easier! Whilst this feature is seen as a benefit just to iPhone users who take photos, this also applies to iPhoto and Aperture.
But you’ll be able to access it using TextEdit on any other Mac you are signed into iCloud with. Apart from this additional service, there’s nothing about it that’s any different from setting up file sharing on the Mac. It’s a service I couldn’t see myself without and one that, despite its flaws, I’d continue to use if it was ever charged for again.
Let us know (as well as any feedback or even requests for future articles) in the comments below!
Furthermore, if you use apps such as Pages, Keynote and Numbers, iCloud can also make a backup of those documents. You can choose what you want to back up on iCloud and as you can see, it covers pretty much everything. Find My iPhone is a very convenient way of locating your iPhone, which we will probe deeper in a bit. Once the message is delivered, an email is also sent to your Apple ID (email address), confirming that the message was delivered. Hit the cog wheel to bring up settings and quick access to whatever you want to add in the calendar. For now, Apple’s initiation of iCloud is commendable, but it remains to be seen how the service will pan out as the user base grows.
Can anyone tell me how to get to that laid out app section or the account bit with language and time zones on? Setting it up can be quite an ordeal, and Apple only gives you 5 GB of free storage, which is enough for 1,000 5 MB photos. At the very bottom is a checkbox to add the iCloud tool to the Systray at the bottom right of Windows for easier access. There is also a button on the ribbon at the top to manually refresh from iCloud if need be. I can see how much space each backup is using, and delete any of the backups if I'd like to free up some space. In this guide, I'll show you how to set up and begin using iCloud on your Mac, as well as the features and benefits it provides. For now, iCloud is up and running and we’ll show you exactly what it has to offer and how you can use it. As for the apps, iCloud will not backup the app but its data, and when you restore from your backup, the apps will be downloaded from the App Store.
That’s the key to making iCloud automatic backup functional, so if you do not enable that, you may toggle as many switches as you want in iCloud, but your pictures, accounts, documents and settings will not be automatically backed up.
But, I already have my own domains and established email addresses, so I have no intention of using the iCloud account. You can also see how much space email is using--which for me is negligible since I'm not using it. That said, before a factory reset, you may still want to hit the Back Up Now button to backup everything for sure before erasing all data and settings. If you have the Find My iPhone option enabled in iCloud, you can simply access the location of your device from the portal and alongside a few more options to go with it as well. Starting to feel like i’m being held hostage by apple, the cost just never seem to stop!
Manage Storage lets you see in detail exactly what is occupying space on your iCloud account. If someone gets your password for one account, they have your password to various user accounts.
