We’re going to learn how to create some Realistic Clouds using Photoshop filters and some basic functions. Following our Quick Tips series, in this tutorial I will show you how to create a text with clouds, using brushes and other few interesting light effects. With the marquee selection from the previous step, go to the Path Palette and click on the icon Make Work Path from the Selection (1).
Again with the Direct Selection Tool (A), click with the right button of the mouse over the path in the image and select Stroke Path.
You can add more light effects like some bigger stars or even play with colors, the idea of this tutorial was to show you a very quick tip on how to create clouds and a text made with clouds. For this tutorial I used only free stock images and I did this in about 3 hours with all the fine tunning and searching for the actual stock.
Start by opening the background image in Photoshop and use the Crop Tool (C) to crop the image as shown in the image below.
In this step I will show you how to turn the background layer into black and white and make it look cool. Create a new layer and add a Gradient Fill adjustment layer (you can draw it with the tool if you want but I have greater control with the adjustment layer). After applying the gradient I noticed some white parts of the building on the top right corner which I hid using the brush tool.
Download the man stock image if you didn’t already, open it in photoshop and use the Pen Tool (P) to subtract it from the background.
Since there are not long strands of hair we will use brushes to mask it, it’s the easiest way.
Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer with Normal blend mode and then a Levels adjustment layer.
Now get the Dodge Tool (O) again and set the Exposure to about 15% and Range to Highlights.
After doing this I also used levels to increase highlights and darken mid tones a bit more. Select the brush tool and the brush preset you just saved and open the Brush window once again.

Activate Scattering and set it to 1000%, activate the Both Axes option and set the Count to 1. After you apply the blur, you may have to duplicate the layer to make the rain more visible. Create another layer and repeat the process but at a slightly different angle, just 2 degrees more on the same direction and this time do not duplicate the layer so that you have like a background rain which is less visible. However, I have received quite a few emails asking me how to create a text made with clouds. Start deleting the inner part of the paths like, each letter has to have only one path like in the image 2. A dialog box will appear, the stroke path window, where you can select what you will use to stroke the path. To do that add a folder in the Layer Palette, this folder has to be beneath the clouds we created with the brush tool.
I am also the founder of Abduzeedo, an award-winning digital publication about design and a personal project that has become the source of inspiration for millions of designers and enthusiasts. It's responsible to communicate the message not only with words but setting the mood and context for the message. Create a new document with size of 4×4 pixels and draw a skew line by using Pencil Tool as on picture below. For this create a new layer, then select Brush Tool (soft round brush with the size of 200 px) and make some black big spots on the canvas. The reason why I made the top daker than the middle and the bottom is because I want to draw attention to the center of the image where the man will be.
Paste it on a new layer above the background layers (or above the group if you groupped the layers) and name it Man.
Use the inner shadow style as shown in the image below to create a halo of light on the man’s back and head.
Use a medium size brush (about 160px) and paint a few strokes over all the highlights on the image.
Also activate Shape Dynamics set Control to Off and Size Jitter to 20% so that you have some size variation on your rain.
Now that your rain brush is ready, create a new layer above all your other layers and stroke one time horizontaly.
I repeated the process yet again at a different angle but when I applied the blur I reduced the Distance to about 200px and reduced the opacity.
In order to accomplish that you have to download some splash brushes or draw that by hand if you have the skills. Now, scroll down and locate the Man layer you created on Step 3 and Ctrl+Click its thumbnail to load it’s selection and use it to create a mask on the water splash layer. I used the spray default brushes (the same ones used to mask the hair on Step 3) on a new layer and Overlay blend mode.

To add the water drops on the man’s face, open the water drops stock and scale it down to fit the face of the man and desaturate the image.
The only thing I did next was create a new stamp and applying the Lighting Effects to it which I always do as a final step.
Use Normal for the Blend Mode, 100% Opacity, Radial for the Style and #07090b and #27160a for the Colors. You can do that by clicking on the icon that is on the top right icon (3) and click Save Path.
After that change the Blend Mode of this layer to Color Dodge and with the Eraser Tool (E) delete some areas leaving just the ones closer to the clouds text.
There are all sorts of symbols and characters and some languages like Japanese have incredible symbols. The difference between the Grandient Map and the Black&White adjustment layers is that with the second one you can specify the luminosity values for each color so you have more control over how much contrast you have on the image. I used separate layers for the man and the background but you can use a single layer if you want. Now load the water brushes and stroke along the man’s back and head to create the water splash effect. Set the blend mode to Softlight and use Levels for fine tunning the blending and a layer mask to hide the edges and parts you don’t want.
Whenever he traveled, he just made oil sketches on paper and after reaching the studio, it was used to paint large scenery.Albert was a prominent Hudson River School artist and his paintings were characterized with radiant light which is often termed as “Luminism”.
I also used the water splash stock image in screen mode to add a more realistic splash on the shoulders.
Bierstadt was a notable artist who managed to create huge paintings of mountains and landscapes. From 1853 to 1857, he studied art with the members of the Dusseldorf School of painting. These clouds we will be painting will be light effects so if you want you can change the opacity of the brush by clicking on the number keys (1-0). Increase the Black until you have just a few stars then increase the white to make them brighter.
Having a close look at his works reveals the fact that most of the paintings are dominated with elements like clouds, fog etc.
For the Texture is very important that you change the scale every time you change the brush tip scale. His oil paintings were different with respect to the strange colors he used to paint water, green etc. Required fields are marked *Name * Email * Website Notify me of follow-up comments by email.
