But wait — Music Beta by Google offers to store and stream the identical number of songs, for free. Finally, unlike Music Beta by Google, Amazon Cloud Drive, Mspot, MP3Tunes, or any of the other cloud-based music lockers we’ve seen, Apple iTunes Match mirrors your music collection onto the cloud in minutes, rather than requiring you to upload it over a period of hours, days, or as Apple claims, weeks.
In addition, there’s no way to share music with friends, create playlists in a collaborative fashion, listen with Facebook pals, mash preferences with friends, or do any of the other neat tricks that unlimited cloud-based music services can allow. At least the music you’ve ripped from CDs, downloaded from MP3 blogs, recorded yourself, or downloaded from P2P services or sneakernet can enter your personal tuft of the Apple cloud for less than the price of two CDs per year, in minutes. Are our iCloud files at risk of being hacked even after they were deleted on our Apple device? A series of high-profile stars including Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Kate Upton and Ariana Grande have fallen victim to one of the biggest celebrity privacy breaches in history, resulting in photographs and videos apparently showing them in the nude being widely circulated on the internet. You get the option to turn on iCloud Drive during the initial setup process but before you switch it on you should read the next section (How do I use iCloud Drive on my Mac). All documents created in iOS 8 will be safely stored until Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite is released this Autumn. You will now see a Finder-like display of all the files and folders stored in iCloud Drive.
Apple held it’s widely anticipated Worldwide Developer Conference recently and as expected, took the opportunity to disclose the upcoming release of many new product features and services. Notifications: We have all experienced the difficulty of maintaining focus when beeps and pop-ups constantly interrupt our concentration. Twitter Integration: Educators are increasingly using twitter for professional development purposes and “tweeting” will now be integrated into a variety of apps such as Safari, Photos, Maps and more. I currently have my iOS Safari browser loaded with a bookmarklet from Instapaper for saving articles for later reading and another from Readability for uncluttered and easier to read page formatting.
Multitasking Gestures One of the main critiques of the iPad from a productivity standpoint is that you can only display and work with one app at a time (although I have had students tell me that this actually minimizes distractions and makes it easier for them to concentrate).
Improved text editing control in the web browser: The inadequacy of the mobile Safari text editor control has made it next to impossible to use popular text editing tools to edit blog posts or Google Docs.
Overall, I’d have to say that most of the new features aren’t really “new” and have existed in other third party apps and competing services for some time already (see Android, Blackberry, Google, DropBox, Instapaper, Readability and more). Before beginning this post, I checked out Best Buy to see how many of its projectors come with an HDMI input.
As a related point if the iPad 2 can Wifi Mirrior the screen the why can't we use Apple Remote Desktop to monitor multiple iPads? I know I'm taking a rather negative tone here but Apple seems to have totally missed the fact that both schools and busisnnes don't really need the iCloud itself.
Does anyone know if you can connect Apple TV directly to an HD Projector, thus allowing students to connect wirelessly and project their ipad2 screen using AirPlay Mirroring?
Welcome to here’s the thing, your source for practical tips, advice, and how-tos about the gadgets you use each day. Up until now, the so-called digital hub for Mac users has been … well, your Mac, meaning that you’ve had to connect your iPhone and or iPad to your Mac desktop or laptop to share your tunes, snapshots, contacts, and calendar events between devices. Now, the idea is that instead of your Mac being your primary repository for your digital goodies, you’ll use iCloud instead. But doesn’t Apple already have a service, called MobileMe, that lets you wirelessly share calendars, contacts, email and photos?
Email, calendars, and contact sharing: As with the old MobileMe service, your email, calendar events, and contacts—including new entries and any changes—will be shared instantly across your various Apple devices, except iCloud will do it all for free rather than $99 a year. You won’t be able to stream those songs on-demand, but you will be able to download them to, say, your iPhone or iPad from anywhere, as long as you have an Internet connection.
That may sound like a handy feature at first blush, but looked at another way, you’re essentially paying $25 a year for the convenience of downloading songs that you already own. Also available now: the ability to download already purchased apps and e-books to any of your Apple devices. Apple issued a stark iCloud security threat warning on its support page on Tuesday, indicating that its venerable cloud service has been under organized attack from malicious sources.

Some even suspect that the Chinese government is behind these malicious intermediary sign-ins, which would surprise exactly nobody. Tweet $25 per year Apple music cloud service launched today, for those who didn’t buy music through iTunes. If you purchased music only through iTunes, Apple already allowed you to re-download your media. Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. In many cases, they can go on using the same things they have been for music, but now, with this attractive cloud feature. As such, it encourages the same old behaviors — downloading songs one-by-one from music stores or P2P networks instead of subscribing to the entire world of music. Unlike Amazon, Google, and most other music lockers, Apple iCloud downloads the files and stores them on your devices, rather than streaming them. It’s a nice offering, but leaves the full promise of cloud-based music up in the air. Learn how to use iCloud Drive in iOS 8, and Macworld Yosemite when it launches this Autumn. Many other apps (such as Byword) already use iCloud for storing documents, and we expect them to be immediately compatible with iCloud Drive. We also think the monthly charge is pretty stingy, and we’d be happier if that 20GB was the free option.
Chief among them was the announcement of the new iOS 5 mobile operating system and a new wireless data synchronization and storage service called iCloud. It does allow you to connect an email address with a phone number to work across different iOS devices and that’s a nice addition. Multitasking will now be simpler and faster with new gestures that allow you to swipe left or right to switch between apps.Accessibility The iPad has been extremely popular in special education and iOS 5 continues to make improvements for people and learners with disabilities. The jury’s still out on this feature but it appears that an enhanced version could still be included with iOS 5.
Enabling a desktop version of iMessage, possibly linked to iChat, would have been a nice idea. One could question the ethics of copying concepts from competitors but that seems to have been the behavior de rigueur of the software industry for many years (from which legal firms have profited more than anyone).
So, what is “iCloud,” exactly—what will it do, when will it arrive, and more importantly, how much will it cost? As of now, Apple says, MobileMe is essentially no more, and iCloud will be free (or mostly free, at least—more on that in a moment). Instead of streaming your music on demand, iCloud will let you re-download any music your bought from iTunes directly to any of your devices. This is why Apple issued the iCloud sign-in warning, posting pretty pictures of how the certificate warning looks like in each browser. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device.
You might have to go to your music library, View Options (Command+J) and turn on iTunes match column. When you files are saved to Documents In The Cloud, you will be able to access the file directly in iCloud Drive folder in Mac OS X. New documents created in iCloud Drive compatible apps are stored in iCloud Drive automatically.
Double-clicking a file compatible with an iCloud Drive app (such as Pages) opens it inside the iCloud App in Safari (where you can make edits).
The nature of iCloud Drive is that it offers direct access to files already saved in iCloud.
Rather that the constant stream of pop-up interruptions that exist today, notifications will appear in a floating window that can be revealed with a swipe from the top of your iPad display. The one glaring limitation is the same one that plagues Blackberry’s BBM service - you can only communicate with others on the same system.

Add to that tabbed browsing and speed improvements and Safari may finally be a capable mobile browser. For those of us that have become accustomed to Apple’s record of innovation this may have been somewhat of a disappointment. Although my wife and I have come to enjoy Netflix and the convenience of the Apple movie store, I bought it because I knew the device would eventually have a major impact on education. I know if my district had issues with getting Google Docs for schools, the same legal issues will apply to iCloud for students. We'd listen, especially if you are a celebrity that has a bunch of fun pics stored in their iPhone or iPad. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are, your music is already in iCloud. This amount of time exceeds iCloud’s Photo Stream facility, which keeps images for a maximum of 30 days before they are deleted.
This includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote from Apple as well as any and all third party apps that elect to synchronize storage on iCloud. Given that they won’t be fully released for some time, it’s too early to close the book on iOS 5 and iCloud yet. Apple does however seem to have successfully integrated the new features into their operating system and software in a fundamental and seamless manner.
And I really believe that by this September, a lot of people are going to start recognizing this. It also has free mobile clients and when you move up to enterprise they have a desktop app too. Apple demoting the PC to the same level as the iOS is okay as long as iOS takes up some of that PC like connectivity. Here's the full text of Apple's iCloud security bit:Apple is deeply committed to protecting our customersa€™ privacy and security. However, when photos that have been uploaded to iCloud are deleted from a phone, they are not necessarily deleted from the online storage. There’s a lot to digest and several significant features that will impact education directly.
Unlike service such as Dropbox that allow storage of any files however, iCloud will only store files from compatible apps.
If you’re an avid Apple consumer or an Apple school then you’ll likely to find many of these new features indispensable. Whats bad is they are seemingly putting their own cloud ahead any local cloud you would wish to create. Wea€™re aware of intermittent organized network attacks using insecure certificates to obtain user information, and we take this very seriously. This does however have important implications for backup and workflow and especially in schools where students are not permitted to take iPads off campus.
Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.
Users should never enter their Apple ID or password into a website that presents a certificate warning. Today your options are either to store the document on the iPad without any automatic backup and without off-campus access if the iPad doesn’t go home with the student.
To verify that they are connected to the authentic iCloud website, users can check the contents of the digital certificate as shown below for Safari, Chrome, and Firefoxa€”each of which provides both certificate information and warnings.
A second option would be to email the document from the device and create a duplicate copy which can be retrieved from the email. Other options that can be configured include WebDav and DropBox but they are cumbersome to set up and manage for anything other than a handful of students.
