Welcome to here’s the thing, your source for practical tips, advice, and how-tos about the gadgets you use each day.
Once configured properly, iCloud Backup will automatically make copies of all the settings, accounts, messages, photos, and applications settings on your iDevice and stores them on Apple’s servers. It’s a great feature for anyone who rarely bothered to dig out their sync cables to manually back up their handsets with iTunes—assuming iCloud Backup works as advertised, that is. As someone who’s seen his fair share of computers and phones fail on him over the years, I wanted to put iCloud Backup to the test before trusting it with my precious data. On some systems "LocalSecurityPolicy" as noted above will be missing either due to the customization by manufacturer or due to the Windows OS version. Insert your Windows XP CD into the drive and, if necessary, double-click the CD icon in My Computer. Click Next to skip past the opening page, choose Back up files and settings from the second page, and then click Next. You might be tempted to click All information on this computer so that you can back up every bit of data on your computer. If you know that you have data files stored outside your profile, click Let me choose what to back up. Select the My Documents check box to back up all the files in your personal profile, and then browse the My Computer hierarchy to select the additional files you need to back up. On the Backup Type, Destination, and Name page, Windows asks you to specify a backup location.

After you've chosen a backup location, enter a descriptive name of your choice for the file, click Next to display the wizard's final page, as shown in Figure 3, and then click Finish to begin backing up immediately. If you are backuping the laptop not permanently located at the Department, you can repeat the above steps once each week (or time interval of your choice) and perform regular backups when you're ready. This example shows the settings for a weekly backup on Friday afternoona good way to make sure your week's work is protected.
After dropping in the micro sim in to the new iPhone 4S I powered it up and started going through the setup procedure to start the restore. Quickly I popped into Starbucks I settled down and jump on their new free Wi-Fi service and restarted the setup process this time selecting the Starbucks Wi-fi connection and the option to restore my iPhone from the previous iCloud backup. Everything went well to start and all my contacts and email accounts, SMS messages and recent calls from the backup dropped into place, and access to my phone was restored. A final step involves re-downloading all your apps from the App Store, a process that the iPhone handled automatically.
You must sign up for iCloud (it’s free, as long as you keep your online storage under 5 GB) and turn on iCloud Backup in the Settings menu. If some of your files are on a shared network drive, open the My Network Places folder and select those folders. Backup assumes you're going to save everything in a single file; you just have to choose a location for that file and give it a name. If you'd rather not count on remembering to perform this crucial task and you are backuping personal workstation permanently located at the Department - set up an automatic backup schedule for Windows.

After a quick flick through the pages of apps on my new iPhone 4S is was apparent that no apps had downloaded in the restore and I now needed to wait for each one to download.
However as you would expect there may be problems if you have a large amount of data to restore on a flakey Wi-Fi connection so be careful. When you get to the final page of the Backup Wizard (see Figure 3 above), don't click Finish. For the purposes of testing I skipped with and selected mobile network but soon discovered that a restore was not able to complete via a mobile connect and required a Wi-Fi connection.
So if you are going to upgrade to your new iPhone 4S while out and about make sure you have a fast Wi-Fi connection or you might find yourself purchasing a few coffees while you wait. Just remember to leave your computer turned on (and not set to go into the suspended mode). This selection preserves your data files (including e-mail messages and address books) and the personal settings stored in the Windows Registry. Choose Later, and then click Set Schedule to open the Schedule Job dialog box shown in Figure 4.
