Chromebooks can connect to VPNs, file shares, and printers — but only if these resources are provided in a certain way. Chromebooks don’t have integrated support for browsing Windows file shares (known as SMB or CIFS shares), or NFS shares from other operating systems.
If you have a file server and you want to make its files available to Chrome OS systems, you’ll have to make those files available in a way the Chrome web browser can understand. Any sort of server software that allows you to create a web interface accessible over standard HTTP or HTTPS will work with a Chromebook.
Chromebooks also have integrated support for browsing FTP sites, so an FTP server can also make your files available to a Chromebook. Open the Settings screen, click Add Connection under Internet connection, and click Add Private Network.
When you add the VPN, you’ll be able to chose from among your installed certificates. DID YOU KNOW?In 2008 the HD-DVD was effectively killed off when Warner Brothers, the last major studio to release both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles, withdrew their support for the format.

The Canon Pixma MX925 is a slightly chunky inkjet MFP with a glossy black exterior, fax capabilities, duplex printing and a 35-page duplex automatic document feeder (ADF).
The printer has a bank of controls at the front that make it easy to use most of its features without ever connecting it to a PC. As well as drivers, the accompanying software CD contains Canon's oddly-named My Image Garden software. The HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is meant primarily as a personal printer in any size office, but prints photos well enough to serve as a home printer too. If you need an inexpensive personal printer in any size office, make sure the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One ($99.99 direct) is somewhere on your must see list.
The 4620's price  and office-centric design put it in head-to-head competition with the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars).
Like the MFC-J430w, the 4620 can print from, scan to, and fax from a PC as well as work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Another similarity is that the 4620 doesn't offer wired network support, but offers WiFi, so you can share it in a micro office or at home in the dual role of home and home office printer. As another point of reference, the 4620 is notably faster than the somewhat more expensive Dell V525w All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Printer (, 3 stars), with its more typical speed for this price range, at 2.9 ppm. Photos were also par overall, but the rating breaks down as better than par for color and a little worse than par for black and white. If you're looking for an inexpensive, office-centric personal printer, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One will certainly do the job. This may seem a bit silly, as Mac OS X and Linux can both access Windows file shares — even iPads and Android tablets have apps that can access standard shared folders! For example, the ownCloud server software provides file access via an HTTP web interface, so you can easily access that via a Chrome browser.

Avoid security headaches by only allowing access to these servers from your local network, not over the Internet.
If you stored them in Dropbox, OneDrive, or another cloud storage service, you could access them on the service’s website. If you have a printer shared from Windows, Mac, Linux, or Linux, Chrome OS won’t be able to communicate with it.
Many new Wi-Fi printers support Google Cloud Print as well as Apple’s AirPrint and other printing protocols. If you don’t know these details, you can get them from your employer or whoever else provides your VPN. Chromebooks are appealing because they’re simple and provide a PC-style desktop that needs little configuration. Ask them to configure their server software so important network resources are accessible from a Chromebook. It takes five separate ink cartridges: dye-based black, cyan, magenta and yellow inks used for colour documents and photo printing, plus a pigmented black ink for sharp document printing. You can also connect it to your network over Ethernet or, as usual, directly to a PC via USB.
This gives you easy access to the MX925's printing and scanning features, allows you to create password-protected PDFs and scan to cloud services including Dropbox and Evernote. One of the few $100 printers that leans more towards office needs than home printing needs, with features like faxing and an automatic document feeder (ADF), it offers all the key features you need for light duty office use at a surprisingly low price.
However, none of features will work unless the printer itself is connected to a network by Wi-Fi. Note too that much like the 4620's speed for business applications, its photo speed was also reasonably fast, but short of impressive, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4 by 6. Text quality is arguably a touch below par, but best described as being at the bottom of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjet printers fall. More precisely, black and white photos in my tests showed a slight tint and a lack of deep dark blacks.
I'd like it better if it also had an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn't be forced to have Wi-Fi on your network to use the features that make it an e-All-in-One. It should be possible for developers to create Chrome apps that can access such files, but these apps haven’t been created yet. Even standard HTTP servers like Apache can list the contents of a directory in a browser and make files available for download, although you won’t be able to upload files. A Google Cloud Print-enabled printer will work without any special configuration — just configure it normally and make it available to your Google account. As long as the computer is powered on and Chrome is running, you’ll be able to print to the printer from your Chromebook.
Chromebooks can connect to Cisco AnyConnect networks, but the Cisco ASA device must be set up to support L2TP over IPSec. You can then connect to other types of VPNs, browse Windows file shares, and print without Google Cloud Print.
Enter developer mode and you’ll have to use terminal commands to get things working and use a more complex desktop interface.
But, if you’re just a typical Chromebook user who only wants to access a shared network folder, you should probably stay away from developer mode.
Instead of the the touchscreen or dial-button controls seen on some previous models in the Pixma MX range, there's a 4x4 keypad to the right of the screen.

The wireless setup screen can detect if a router within range supports Wireless Protected Setup (WPS), which allows you to pair the MFP with your router just by pressing two buttons. Although My Image Garden has some useful features, such as a calendar showing your images by date, it's also ugly and badly designed.
But either one can serve nicely as a personal printer in any size office or in the dual role of home and home office printer.
Neither printer offers memory card slots, support for PictBridge cameras, or other photocentric features. If you plan to connect by USB to a computer that's on a network, you can't use them whether you have Wi-Fi on your network or not. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), it scored reasonably well for speed, at an effective 3.4 pages per minute (ppm). Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you should find it suitable for most business needs.
Color photos, however, were at least as good as the high end of the range I would expect from drug store prints.
All you need to do is open the box, plug the xPrintServer into the network, and it will be able to link all user IDs to all printers on the network automatically, paving the way for Cloud Printing in just a matter of minutes. Using Google Cloud Print, you can make your home and work printers available to you and anyone you choose, from the applications you use every day.
A 250-sheet paper tray means you can keep printing for quite a while before having to refill it, and there's a sheet feed for thicker media, a CD printing tray and a separate paper tray for photo paper of up to 5x7in in size.
When the printer is switched off, the keypad's buttons are all blank, but illuminated icons appear on the keys when the printer is in use.
If that's not a feature your router supports, you can just select your network's SSID and enter the password by using the navigation keys to select characters from a letter grid. More happily, the MX925 also supports Google Cloud Print, to let you print from many different devices over the internet, and Canon's Pixma Printing Solutions app makes it easy to send the printer documents from an iOS or Android mobile phone or tablet on the same network. That makes the 4620 significantly slower than the MFC-J430w at 4.3 ppm, but keep in mind that the Brother printer's fast speed is one of the reasons it's an Editors' Choice.
Graphics output quality is dead on par, which makes it easily good enough for business needs. If you don't need those features, you should also consider the Brother MFC-J430w with its faster speed. Google Cloud Print works on your phone, tablet, Chromebook, PC, and any other web-connected device you want to print from.
Both the icons and the keys' functions change depending on which of the MFP's features you are using. But whether you want those features or not, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is a capable choice and well worth considering. While going through the settings menus, for example, they're navigation arrows, but if you're using the MX925's fax, they turn into a number pad.
