Note I did manage to make a RaidZ (software raid 5) array out of vhd’s which was a pretty nice find.
Also I’m building (just got the parts) an extra server with a Supermicro X8SIL-F and probably an i3-530 + 8GB of RAM this weekend. For this guide, I will be using screenshots from the Hyper-V manager in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.
At this point, you should have a basic Hyper-V virtual machine configured to do just about nothing. Since the release of Windows Server 2008, there has been no way to build a cluster without purchasing dedicated, proprietary storage (such as an array from HP, Dell, EMC or NetApp, to name just a few). Without passing those tests, the cluster cannot be formed at all - and the culprit is normally the "SCSI-3 Persistent Reservation" tests, without which the cluster cannot operate (because it cannot guarantee that the disks are owned by only a single node at a time). Now you probably won't want to use this for a critical production system - FreeNAS is after all beta software. Hyper-V does one thing extremely well: it allows one to pass raw disks directly to virtual machines. In the standard ESXi model, the easiest way to allow a virtual machine to control raw disks is by using VMDirectPath which requires VT-d to pass through a HBA such as a LSI SAS 2008 based card.
The problem with the VMware ESXi VMDirectPath method is that unless you do raw device mapping, you end up needing a HBA (say $100 and 8w) to pass through disks.
Further, the Hyper-V hardware compatibility list is significantly larger than the ESXi one so there are simply more options for supported controllers, especially onboard ones from Marvell and others. Napp-it is a well-known graphical web interface for ZFS on Solaris derived platforms such as OmniOS, NexentaCore, Solaris 11 and others. While the idea of having a ZFS on Linux Hyper-V test bed was possible, one can now quickly create setups such as RAID-Z pools using the napp-it web interface.
I only recently became aware of physical disk passthrough in Hyper-V and have been wanting to take it for a spin with either Napp-it or FreeNAS. Would love to see some performance benchmarks from the Hyper-V hosts perspective with regards to iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS shares. I can easily map 4 drives to one VM and 4 others to the other with an 8 drive HBA without using vt-d . The reason that it is recommended to pass the whole HBA to the guest-vm on ESXi is because that is the only way for the guest to get complete HW access to the block devices talking AHCI directly top the disks. Microsoft offers a free Hyper-V Server R2 product for those that want to try and do not have access to a Server 2008 R2 testbed.
With that out of the way, let’s begin the basic Hyper-V VM setup for a NON-Windows based guest operating system.
It should be noted that you generally want to locate this path on a redundant storage  set (raid 1, raid 5, raid 6, and etc) because this will house the OS for your VM. We will fix that very soon but this is a base article so that I don’t have to go through these steps each time. OpenFiler has been developing the feature, but the latest news I found is that they will be making it a premium (ie paid) feature.
I removed the DVD-ROM drive and added three new 128GB disks on the 3 available IDE controller slots. Normally the storage tests fail after a few moments, but in the FreeNAS case they succeeded - I have a working, validated file server cluster using free software for the storage and Windows 2008 Enterprise for the compute power.
But for your lab environments, or running up a virtual cluster; this might just fit the bill perfectly.
While this may not seem like a major benefit, for low power and smaller storage implementations it does make a huge difference.


Once that HBA is passed through to the VM, one can use all eight ports worth of drives, and more with expanders, for storage.
One can pass-through disks basically in two steps (here is the Hyper-V disk passthrough guide from over three years ago that still works): 1. You could then have two more disks on the onboard SATA controller and pass them through to each VM.
Whereas FreeBSD has FreeNAS as a great web management interface for its ZFS implementation, the ZFS on Linux project has not had a similar web interface until now. In the example above we utilized virtual disks (vhdx format) however raw disk pass-through worked also.
ReFS, SMB3, native iSCSI targets and initiators are all relatively recent additions to the Microsoft feature list.
However, if I put stress on the linux-VM, in particular through the network, ubuntu’s spitting errors (while not crashing and everything seems to work in the end).
What you are doing on Hyper-V is, as Bob_Builder says, completely possible on ESXi by installing the driver for the HBA into ESXi. The goal of STH is simply to help users find some information about basic server building blocks.
Something like a Supermicro X8SIL-F with an Intel SASUC8I will provide up to 14 SATA ports and work with every OS. Until very recently, none of these have passed the cluster storage tests that Windows 2008 executes before forming the cluster. OpenSolaris has claimed to have support for months, but I was unable to make it work (despite updating the system past the build number in which support was added, snv_115). I configured IP addresses and ensured I could ping everything on both networks, then installed the File Server role and the Failover Cluster feature.
Then I loaded the FreeNAS config page and configured a RAIDZ1 (RAID 5 ZFS) device, a ZFS Pool using the device, a Portal group, an Initiator group and three extents, each of which provides a single iSCSI target (Quorum, File Server 1 and File Server 2). On node 2 I brought each device online, initialized the disk and created a simple volume, assigning drive letters as needed.
With Microsoft’s ability to pass raw physical disks directly to Hyper-V virtual machines, one does not require VT-d or passing an entire controller (with associated disks) through to the virtual machine. This works very well and we have had a guide to setting up VMDirectPath HBA and disk pass-through for years. Have 8 ports on one controller and want to pass 2 drives to one VM and 2 drives to another?
But that is not recommended for ZFS because you add a layer (a shim) between ZFS and the raw drives. From there you can do everything… see the virtual (java) monitor output, attach drives and etc. If you want integrated windows client backups, deduplication, and the ability to do things like media encoding, WHS is pretty much the best there is at the moment. Setting up the networks was confusing for a moment - the UI changes the text without highlighting the changes, so it took a few goes to sort it all out. ZFS should be given direct access to the drives in order to better guarantee data integrity on disk.
Not perfect, but I am routing traffic through two Dell Gigabit switches so this is not a number found over 1 meter of Cat 6. I am probably going to be doing more OS reviews in the near future but Nexenta is becoming a favorite. Both of those I have reviewed already and will be looking at an Asus model this weekend that is similar to both of those that may also prove to be a solid choice. I would like to have used ECC, but I had 12GB of DDR3 free and an Intel Core i7 920 was $199 at the time. I assigned a public IP to the public NIC and a private IP to the NIC on a new private network for iSCSI. Furthermore, it works on most Windows 8 desktops without requiring new hardware or VT-d support. Hyper-V works well with passing through single disks across controllers or on a single controller and works well with Ubuntu.

Creating a ZFS test machine, even with a simple three or four disk setup to play with RAID-Z and RAID-Z2 pools can now be accomplished easily without installing another piece of software beyond what you get with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. A common concern we heard previously with ZFS on Linux was the lack of a solid user interface to start learning on.

Also, putting iSCSI on a team has been known to cause problems, which is why it’s not supported.
That will get you load-balancing, link-aggregation, and fault-tolerance for your connection to storage, all in one checkbox. Your iSCSI device or software target may have its own rules for how iSCSI initiators connect to it, so make sure that it can support MPIO and that you connect to it the way the manufacturer intends. For the Microsoft iSCSI target, all you have to do is provide a host with multiple IPs and have your MPIO client connect to each of them. For many other devices, you team the device’s adapters and make one connection per initiator IP to a single target IP. I read somewhere that for SMB 3.0 multi-channel to work, all the adapters have to be in unique subnets.
Except that there’s a switch in the middle here and that makes it a supported configuration. When you’re done, your virtual setup on your converged fabric must look pretty much exactly like a physical setup would. And, of course, your converged fabric must have enough physical adapters to support the number of virtual adapters you placed on it.Of course, this does depend on a few factors all working.
My virtual switch is currently in Hyper-V Transport mode and both MPIO and SMB 3.0 multi-channel appear to be working fine. The virtual adapters do not support RSS, which can reportedly accelerate SMB communication by as much as 10%. Finally, it seems like a lot of people dramatically overestimate what sort of performance is needed in order to be acceptable. I’ve noticed that when I challenge people that are arguing with me to show me real-world performance metrics, they are very reluctant to show anything except file copies and stress-test results and edge-case anecdotes. I gain superior overall load-balancing and redundancy at the expense of a 10% or less performance boost that I would have been unlikely to notice in general production anyway.
