In our earlier article we showed you how to configure the popular Network Area Storage Appliance called FreeNAS. You have to create a directory structure by creating three directories using the three mkdir commands shown in the picture.
FreeNAS is working a bit differently than Openfiler when it comes to configuring iSCSI connection to ESXi host.
When I finished building my homelab recently, I at first tested several distributions but finally sticked with FreeNAS which I think has the coolest user interface, and which can be up and running in less than 10 minutes. There is an iSCSI configuration which works a bit differently than what I use to experiment with Openfiler. This makes me think, in my case, I better configure my individual SSD’s as an iSCSI targets and the raid Z volume as an NFS ….
In the example below I’m creating a device extent for the whole SSD which has got a 128 Gigs of total storage capacity. Several free and open-source operating systems run extremely well on a wide array of older hardware. Ideally, FreeNAS should be installed on a small SSD or even a flash drive (though standard hard drives also work fine in a pinch), and the system should feature one or more reliable hard drives for bulk storage.
When using the UFS (Unix File System), FreeNAS doesna€™t require much memory or processing power. The more advanced ZFS (Zettabyte File System) is highly reliable and offers an array of features to preserve and protect data, but it also has much more overhead. To set up FreeNAS youa€™ll need to download the installation ISO file from the FreeNAS website. Installing the OS to a flash drive is handier, and it frees your actual hard drives to store your files. If you dona€™t have an optical drive available, FreeNAS can be installed directly to a USB thumb drive (or other drive) using a couple of free utilities, such as WinRAR.
Next, insert your flash drive, run Win32 Disk Imager, and select the FreeNAS_x64.img image file. When FreeNAS initially boots, youa€™ll be presented with a simple text menu with 11 options.
After booting to the flash drive, youa€™ll ultimately see a simple text menu with 11 options. The first time you hit the FreeNAS IP address, youa€™ll be prompted to set an administrator password. Youa€™ll have to follow a few steps to configure your storage volumes and make them accessible to other systems on the network. Which drives to use, the preferred file system, permissions and share names need to be configured before you can access the storage volumes on your FreeNAS server. Youa€™ll also need to select the file system, enable any services or protocols of choice, create and name a shared folder, and set folder permissions.

Home users can build FreeNAS storage to store there videos, files and stream from FreeNAS to every network devices or to smart TVs etc. In this FreeNAS 4-article series, we will cover the installation and configuration of FreeNAS with storage and in later articles will cover setting up a video streaming & torrent server. To set up a FreeNAS operating system, you will need to download latest stable installation ISO Image (i.e. By default at first it will assign a dynamic IP address and we have to configure it manually. Note: First let me configure the DNS, I have a valid name resolver at my end, so let me configure my DNS settings. Finally, at last choosing IPv6 no and pressing enter will configure the interface and get saved automatically. I'm Working as a System Administrator for last 10 year's with 4 years experience with Linux Distributions, fall in love with text based operating systems.
Donovan Colbert illustrates how to create a suitable, inexpensive data replication solution for a small office or data center on a limited budget.
To set up your Source FreeNAS server Rsync Configuration, log in to your source Freenas server (Figure ZZE). At the summary page, verify your settings and then click the Apply Changes button (Figure ZZK). Open up a browse session to the share on the Source FreeNAS server and the Target FreeNAS server. Stay on top of the latest Microsoft Windows tips and tricks with TechRepublic's Windows Desktop newsletter, delivered every Monday and Thursday. When creating a file extent, you specify a file name that iSCSI clients will have access to (similar in concept to a mount point) and the maximum size of that file (storage area). As I mentioned before, the device extent is apparently faster, so I go for it and create a device extent.
One in particular, FreeNAS, is extremely stable, easy to set up, and laser-focused on storing and sharing files across your home network.A All you need is a working system with a reliable hard drive (or three) and a little time to configure everything. If you have an optical drive, burn that ISO to a disc and then boot from it the way you would any other bootable CD. You'll wind up with an image file named FreeNAS_x64.img, which youa€™ll need to write to the flash drive to install the OS and make the drive bootable. The entire image is only 1.86GB, though it requires a drive with a capacity of at least 4GB to boot and run reliably.
In the Device drop-down menu on the right, make sure your flash drivea€™s drive letter is selected. Note, however, that the default user name is not "admin" or "administrator," but "root," which is the Unix system's rough equivalent of a Windows admin. If you have a working DHCP server on your network during FreeNAS installation, the FreeNAS Server will be able to get the IP address from the DHCP server. FreeNAS operating system is totally based on BSD and can be installed on virtual machines or in physical machines to share data storage via a computer network. After booting the system with FreeNAS image, by default it will start the installation, if not we have to press enter to continue the installation. After selecting the drive, on the next screen you will warned for data loss, If you have any important data in that selected drive, please take a backup before installing FreeNAS on the drive.
After FreeNAS setup completed, we can get the console setup menu to add the DNS IP Address to access the FreeNAS web dashboard. To configure DNS choose number 6 and press enter, then we have to enter the DNS information such as domain, IP address of DNS server and Press Enter.

To access the FreeNAS GUI interface, open the web browser and enter the ip address which we had used to configure the interface setup. After login, you will see informations about FreeNAS server such as domain name, version, total memory available, system time, up time, system load, etc. In the next article we will be discussing on how to configure FreeNAS settings in step by step process and how can we define storage in FreeNAS, till then stay tuned for updates and don’t forget to add your comments. Enter a name and a comment (I've selected "testmod" as my name and comment) and click the Browse button in Path to define your source Rsync share (Figure ZZH). Drop a file into the source and wait, and if everything is set up correctly, the file should shortly appear on the target share, as well. In this article we will show you how you can configure CIFS so you can connect to a CIFS share from any machine using a username and password. Assuming that's how your network is set up, it shouldA acquire an IP address and list it right at the bottom of the menu. You can access your FreeNAS server just like any other shared PC on your network (typically via Windows' Network settings). But, in case you don’t have a DHCP server, you will need to specify the IP address manually.

As every Operating system FreeNAS too have the similar steps for installation and it won’t take more than 2 minutes to Install. We have total 9 drives, so here I’m using first 5 GB ada0 drive for my FreeNAS installation and other 8 Drives are used for Storage (will be discussed in next part of this series). Please note that you can use FQDN if your FreeNAS is registered with your DNS server or otherwise configured to resolve (Figure ZZO). Select the Synchronization Time option that matches the settings you entered on the host machines (in my case, every 5 minutes all hours, all days, all months, and all days of the week). Congratulations, you've configured an inexpensive NAS solution that does disk-to-disk data replication (Figure ZZW).
The FreeNAS website has an extensive FAQ and community sectionA  that's definitely worth checking out. In Remote Module Name, enter the name of the source server module we created on the source, "testmod." Click the Add button at the bottom of the page (Figure ZZU). In our example our FreeNAS appliance is not configured with ZFS or Zero File System rather Universal File System. Insert the flash drive into the machine you want to use with FreeNAS, boot to the drive, and the OS should launch. Command-line jockeys can configure many options right from the text menu, but ita€™s definitely easier and more intuitive to log into the web GUI.
