When Ana asked me for some projects that I would be interested in doing I knew this was one on the top of my list. For the finish I used a soft blue with a flat latex base (sorry, I don't know the exact color it was an old one I had on hand). Mark top and bottom boards as shown in diagram, carefully measuring to make sure there is a 13 ?” gap between all shelves. Do to the size of this project, you may need to elevate it on cork or felt pads to keep it level and from “rocking”. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Hi Brian, this could be built either way, but the full vertical sides actually bear the weight of all the shelves, transferring the weight of the shelf contents down to the ground.
I understand your comment, but I'm more interested in the strength of the wood instead of the necessary shear force to bust the screws. If you are going to stain the unit, just insert the appropriate sized dowel and careful saw off the excess with a dovetail saw or a sharp chisel. This console height cubby unit can be used as wall storage or as one of our readers did (inspired by DIY Magazine) an entire wall of storage!
Showcase: Built From These PlansI am so honored each and every time one of you fine friends builds from these very plans! Before beginning to build, always check in on my site to make sure you have the most up to date set of plans, I occasionally update and change the plans to make the building process easier or to allow for less expensive purchasing of materials! Insert into the cabinet, then secure with a few brad nails through the sides, shelf and bottom. This hutch works with our Braden Collection and features four large cubbies, a mail sort shelf, and two large shelves.
Thank you Christine for sharing your amazing Blue Entryway Locker system on our Facebook Page and in our Photo Gallery. I was so excited to see one of my favorite collections in a pretty blue, I just had to go and design the final piece to the collection.

Because of all the boards and the face framing and the back and the low use of this piece, you can use a nailer and 2? nails to fasten.
Mark the joints for the sides on both the inside and outside (so you know where to line boards up and also where to start your fasteners). One of the most important parts of building big projects – especially big projects where multiples are lined up – is building square. I'm working on transforming my boys' nursery into a 'big boy room' and this is one of the first steps toward that process.
I primed, painted 2 coats of paint (sanded in between) and applied a clear coat to finish and seal it. I guess it wouldn't really matter in the end, as we probably won't be storing baby elephants on the shelves, but it's just a question I have.
But like I said, I don't think much being stored on the shelves would cause an issue either way. I just want to give you an idea of how to finish out the tops and bottoms to make the shelving units look like built-ins.
First fasten all the bottom dividers in place, fastening through the shelves into the ends of the dividers. Read through the entire set of instructions and all comments before beginning this project. Set the Kreg jig for ?” material and drill pocket holes in the sides and bottom of the back. The storage is incredible, the process of building is simple and the satisfaction of knowing, 'I actually built that beast of a storage unit' is awesome! If you print out or save plans, be sure to check in on my site to be sure you have the most up to date set of plans, as I occasionally update things for ease of building or buying. Drill pocket holes in the top, bottom, and back of the lower dividers, and the bottom and back only of the upper dividers.
Feel Free to link to any of my plans so long as you provide an adequate link back to the appropriate post!

I'll have to modify the plan though to fit cowboy boots :D If I build it one section at a time I think this plan is totally doable!
If you are new to building, read through the GETTING STARTED section and other articles found under the BUILD tab in the menu on my site, it has valuable information about how to get started, tools and techniques.
Plans from this page are not to be used for commercial purposes or republished without the express written consent of Rayan Turner, The Design Confidential I hope to provide accurate plans, however, I cannot guarantee each plan for accuracy. TIP: Alternate drilling pocket holes offset on each end so screws do not line up exactly when you go to place shelves. If you are unfamiliar with the finishing process, visit my Finishing school for some tips and tricks for painting like a pro and for special finishing practices. Not every plan that I post has been built and tested, so you are building at your own risk. Use glue to secure your joints and Consider Painting or Staining individual sections prior to assembling.
It is recommended that you have a clear understanding of how the project works before beginning any project.
Coat with a spray on Poly or Wipe on Poly to protect your finish and your piece and it will last for ages.
Adhere to all safety standards and guidelines, and be sure you follow safety protocol throughout your build. If you are unsure about whether you are building safely, run a quick online search for the tool or technique you are using, or contact me via email or post to the forum before you move ahead.
