TweetThe unsteady economic climate is causing businesses to re-evaluate their on-site IT infrastructures and resources. More than a third of the businesses listed affordability as a primary driver when it came to migrating to the cloud.
According to the results, we can see that firms are beginning to understand Cloud computing a little better but are unsure as to how to adopt it. Nearly two out of three respondents were considering moving to the Cloud in the next couple of years.
Majority of the respondents felt that the largest challenge facing traditional IT systems were the cost and maintenance involved. More than half were put off moving to the Cloud because of a perceived loss of security and control. The director of Rise, Steve Holford, interpreted the results to mean that businesses are being forced to consider the benefits in terms of cost relating to managed services despite their concerns about cloud uptake.
Because of the recent volatility in the economic environment, businesses have been forced to actively seek out savings and Cloud Computing is a strong alternative. Financially, maintaining a traditional IT infrastructure is a huge commitment and Cloud Computing is one way to rid yourself of on-going upgrades and maintenance expenses. Steve went on to say that the small cost of migrating to the Cloud can save businesses a lot of money in the long run and, considering the economic environment these days, this simply cannot be ignored. Businesses would also be able to place the focus on their core business activities if they outsource their IT requirements.
In 2012, more than 1.7 million jobs in the field of cloud computing remained unoccupied, according to analysts firm IDC.
Cloud marketing has the ability to drastically change the ways in which they reach and engage their audience, particularly with regard to distributing and storing mission-critical data.
More and more companies encourage their employees to work on their devices, thus reducing the cost of computer equipment, but also increase the cost to maintain licenses and safety.
Despite the inclination to wait until all of the cloud’s kinks have been worked out, holding off on cloud initiatives until the industry matures won’t guarantee success.
The software industry is undergoing major changes by trends such as cloud, SaaS, mobile technology and the “consumerization of IT”. What you may not have known, is that there are currently over 130 cloud service providers (CSPs) around the world, who are providing DR as a Service (DRaaS) powered by Zerto.
Recently, VMWare announced the availability of a DR offering in their multi-tenant public cloud, vCloud Air (vCloud Air DR). If you are an organization that’s exploring the possibility of using an external cloud service provider as your DR target, should you consider vCloud Air DR or one of the Zerto-powered CSPs? There are over 130 active cloud service providers offering Cloud DR powered by Zerto Virtual Replication. Even though VR 5.5 has the ability to recover to multiple point-in-time instances, this ability is disabled when using vCloud Air DR.
ZVR is a CDP-like replication solution, with the ability to failover to any point-in-time within the journal. Go to the original source site and manually rename or delete the original VMs from vCenter inventory.
Once the VMs are copied back to the original source site, manually edit the VM network settings to connect to original source site port groups. With ZVR, reverse replication and failing back a protection group literally takes a few mouse clicks and is fully automated. If you’d like to learn more about Zerto, whether you’re looking for product information, are looking to purchase Zerto, or just have questions about how the software works – We’re here to help!
At Zerto, we have a round-the-clock support team and many helpful resources available to you. Whether you’re looking to become a new Zerto partner, or have questions around your existing partnership or the ZAP Program in general, we’re here to answer your questions!
EBay said third-quarter revenue rose 15 percent to $3.4 billion, while profit climbed 14 percent to $718 million, or 55 cents a share, compared with 48 cents last year.
EBay forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $3.85 billion to $4 billion and profit of 66 cents to 69 cents per share. EBay shares fluctuated between small gains and losses in after-hours trading following the results.
Some analysts expected eBay to lift its fourth-quarter forecast a lot, but that did not happen. EBay may be giving a cautious outlook for the holiday season because big retailers including Target Corp and Best Buy Co Inc are planning to match Amazon’s online prices, Hottovy noted. EBay shares have jumped so far this year, outpacing those of Amazon, on optimism that growth has resumed at the Marketplaces business and on hope for an expansion of PayPal from its online roots into physical stores. The explosive growth of mobile shopping has also attracted hundreds of thousands of new consumers to eBay’s marketplace this year. In the third quarter, about 800,000 shoppers made their first-ever eBay purchase through a mobile device, CEO Donahoe told analysts during the conference call.

That growth will be driven by improvements in personalized product recommendations, expansion in countries including Brazil and Russia and chasing opportunities in local commerce, the CEO said.
EBay unveiled a redesign of its website earlier this month, which included more personalized product recommendations and faster PayPal checkout. Donahoe said that eBay will only roll out website changes that have already tested well with shoppers. While many believe CIO's role is evolving and that he's occupying a key place in the boardroom, a recent study brings to light that more than half of the CIO, CTO or IT admin staff (55%) are not thanked by colleagues for carrying out essential IT tasks on their behalf.
Thirty percent of physical servers are sitting "comatose" according to research findings from Anthesis Group.
The latest ProLiant DL20 Gen9 from the freshly minted Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) squeezes a remarkable range of features into the smallest of chassis. Our review system was fitted with a 3.4GHz quad-core E3-1230 v5 Xeon, 16GB of DDR4 and an upgraded Smart Array P440 PCI-E RAID card.
Base systems have two non-hot-plug (NHP) LFF SATA drive bays, but you can order hot-plug drive bays instead.
Alternatively, there is a model with four hot-swap SFF bays which also employs the B140i controller for SATA drives. HPE’s SmartDrive carriers are packed with LEDs with a spinner ring inside the lever shows drive status and activity.
The DL20 Gen9 presents a well-designed interior with easy access to all the important bits.
Four DIMM slots sit next to the CPU socket and a solid plastic shroud covers them all for improved air flow. A third dual-rotor fan sits in the middle of the chassis and is angled towards the expansion riser card.
There is another alternative as HPE offers a riser card with a 16X PCI-E slot specifically for its Nvidia Quadro K2200 GPU Module. HP has done a fine job keeping noise levels down making the DL20 Gen9 suitable for a wide range of deployments including small offices. The DL20 Gen9 is endowed with HPE’s embedded iLO4 chip so remote management features simply don’t get any better. The server is supplied with an iLO4 Standard license which includes options for remotely turning the server on and off or rebooting it. With the HPE Insight agent installed on the server, we could also access its Systems Management Homepage directly from the iLO4 portal. Despite its dainty proportions, the ProLiant DL20 Gen9 has all the credentials for a serious entry-level rack server.
There comes a point when I have to stop for a moment to appreciate how far technology has come. Granted, I’m not unleashing the taxing programs I would put a more powerful laptop or even my desktop. As you might expect, this problem increases exponentially if you’re keen on keeping a dozen or so tabs open. Cortana, Microsoft’s answer to Apple Siri and Google Voice, is included with the OS, and I played around with her (its?) voice-recognition capability. Sadly, I can’t imagine using Cortana’s voice tool for anything other than novelty purposes. After spending a few hours with Acer’s answer to the Google Chromebook, I’m impressed by how versatile this machine is at such a low price.
According to Rise, a hosted services provider, a third of the businesses polled felt that managed services were a more cost-effective alternative. More than half of those surveyed admitted to ignorance when it came to migration and also concerns about security of data and that the cloud could handle the complexity of data.
Instead of having to lay out a vast amount of money for extra IT equipment that is only used part of the time, employees are able to access the stored data in the Cloud and the company will only pay for time actually used. There is still a great deal of uncertainty but this can be overcome by using a combination of Cloud Computing and traditional data storage for sensitive info. Wall Street was looking for fourth-quarter earnings of 68 cents a share on revenue of $3.94 billion, according to sources. This price tussle may put more shoppers and revenue up for grabs during the fourth quarter, he added.
But under Chief Executive John Donahoe, eBay has invested to improve the buying experience by upgrading search capabilities and prodding sellers to provide more services such as free shipping and easier returns. The changes could boost sales in coming quarters, but some analysts also worry that the changes may also disrupt online shopping during the crucial holiday season. HPE quoted us a list price of ?1,273 ex VAT for the system without any drives and street prices will almost certainly be lower.
Either way, they’re managed by the server’s embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i controller which supports stripes, mirrors and RAID5 arrays. For more storage performance, HPE offers the Smart Array H240 HBA which adds 12Gbps SAS support to the storage equation.

It supports an optional 4GB FBWC (flash backed write cache) module plus RAID6 and 60 arrays. We had only one drive configured, so the carrier release button glowed white indicating the drive must not be removed while the server is powered up. The motherboard occupies the right-hand side of the chassis with the processor located towards the front and serviced by two small fans.
Our system was equipped with two 8GB DDR4 UDIMM modules and the motherboard supports a maximum of 64GB. Virtualisation fans also get a nod as the motherboard has a microSD card slot for an embedded hypervisor.
You can upgrade the server to dual hot-plug 900W PSUs using HP’s enablement kit, although this is only supported by models with SFF bays. Just select this option during boot-up, choose your OS, point it at the installation file location when requested and leave it to load the OS and all required drivers. The slick iLO4 web portal provides a wealth of information about operations and critical components, fault alerting and direct access to HP’s online support. You’ll need to upgrade to an iLO4 Essentials license if you want full OS remote control and power metering. Note that all critical firmware updates for ProLiant server are provided free of charge, but regular ROM BIOS firmware updates require a valid warranty or support contract.
It combines a classy set of features with plenty of processing power plus silent running and won’t be beaten for value.
Instead, I’ve been primarily using Chrome to surf the Internet, which is the main thing I use a computer for anyway. Aspire has an Intel Celeron N3050 Dual-Core processor, which, if you don’t speak technical jargon, means it’s going to be taxed even without a lot going on. Once I found the laptop’s limitations, though, I adjusted my browsing habits accordingly to push on with nary a hitch. This is an advantage for me because I already use Microsoft’s latest operating system on my desktop.
I have to admit, after using Siri on my iPhone 6 for the last eight months, I was shocked at how well Cortana works. Unlike on a phone, where I’m cursed with a virtual keyboard, I have the real thing on the Aspire, and I’d much rather type in a query than let my officemates hear the myriad things that I don’t know. I know that it won’t be able to run a graphically intense video game such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, but something a little more modest seemed appropriate.
As long as you understand where Aspire excels (internet browsing, office tools, retro-style games), there’s a lot to like about this machine.
The survey was offered to over 100 businesses in order to gauge their receptiveness to Cloud Computing. With ZVR, you can pre-configure protection groups, protect multiple VMs together in a consistency group, re-IP the failed over workloads, customized the boot order for failed over VMs, and execute failback.
The 32GB unit I’m using retails for $190 (with a 16GB version at a $20 discount), and it’s a wonder that such a versatile machine is available for such a small price. Aspire handles Google Docs swimmingly (that’s where I wrote most of the this story), and if you demand a more versatile word processor, Acer has you covered.
Again, it’s a sneaky offer considering that, if you fall in love with all those bytes of storage space, you’re going to be whipping out your credit card for the privilege of continuing to use it going forward. Here, even though I was using the built-in microphone next to an open window above a busy San Francisco street corner (complete with honking horns and yelling traffic cops), it picked up nearly every word I said. So I downloaded the Steam digital PC game store and Spelunky to see if it was possible to play my favorite game on a sub-$200 machine. The trackpad works well for minute positioning, and it allows for two-finger scrolling, so I was able to navigate without searching for a mouse to plug into one of the two USB ports. It even helped me change its search engine from Bing to Google, and I have to applaud Cortana for taking the high ground on a touchy subject. The vCloud Air DR VR is just a replication mechanism that creates a VM replica at the target site. I quickly recognized the risk and chose to avoid it rather than face the wrath of a stuttering webpage. Granted, you have to shell out money after a year, but at least you have 12 months to enjoy Microsoft’s office tools.
The minimum advertised RPO is 15 minutes, which doesn’t match what you will normally see in actual production performance. It will usually be much higher unless snapshots are run every 15 minutes, which will cause considerable slow-down in the production data center.
Also, there is no ability to execute a non-disruptive DR test without actually failing over the VM.
