Companies like the two mentioned on the previous paragraph might be more well known than others but still they are missing several features and flexibility. SugarSync promotes this as an advantage but they have other limitations, as I found on this thread. I remember a couple of years ago using ZumoDrive (it was a beautiful), a service which offered exactly this but unfortunately after the company was sold to Motorola Mobility they shutdown the service :(. A complete service should allow me to point to network & external external hard drives paths of files and folders to be synced without any hassle. Although not everybody will use this functionality its nice to be able to assign different type of permissions to each folder (if required).
Most of the services that allow file sharing will count shared space also as own used spaced.
It would be nice to have the possibility of remote wiping a specific computer in case it gets stolen.
Having statistics on how many shared folders I have and with whom, or knowing how many times a publicly shared file has been accessed would be nice information to have and would allow the user to have better control of their files and service.
If you want to sync a big folder but you want to keep out from syncing specific file types it would be great to define on each folder if one or more file types should be excluded.
For the service to be reliable and fast, servers or CDN?s distributed around the world are a must. One account should allow you to configure unlimited computers, tablets, smartphones with the service.
For now I am using a free version (16 GB) of Dropbox for general files, Google Drive for backing up all my pictures and now I am testing CrashPlan to backup all my stuff as an offsite solution. Regarding JustCloud, it was the worst experience I had with a service, the website is totally deceiving.

As of late, SugarSync’s low(er) speed really starts bothering me and it holds me back from subscribing. Also I tried to sync 130.000 files (650 GB) and I had a lot of problems that they are still working on them. TweetCloud computing continues to gain more mainstream adoption as more companies move into the cloud. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is what most IT professionals think about when they talk about the cloud. Forrester, an analyst firm predicts it will generate greater revenue potential which can clearly be seen from Amazon Web Services, the undisputed commodity IaaS revenue leader. Rackspace, the second largest commodity IaaS provider also reveals an increase in its revenue.
Both AWS and Rackspace’s rapid revenue growth can be credited from the growing usage of the IaaS. Large organizations rely on commodity IaaS for testing and developing new applications, and for hosting applications that are less-critical, while small businesses use it for mission-critical applications.
Providing on-demand access to computing and storage resources is the main focus of Enterprise IaaS clouds.
Even though adoption rates and market size can be hard to distinguish at Enterprise IaaS, it is still doing fine among its target audience.
On top of the core enterprise IaaS platform, the entrance of IBM into the enterprise IaaS adds diverse services.
For enterprise IaaS providers, one challenge would be to harden their clouds for enterprise applications.
The huge financial investment that Paas gained in the past years proved that is continues to gain popularity.
Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform is at the center of its cloud efforts that has attracted a number of customers.
On the first half of 2011, PaaS providers address the concern about lack of control and lack of choice. Some reported that SaaS has inspired Everything as a Service, where any IT process or application or business function is available as a service. Aside from the endless emergence of new applications, SaaS will focus on integration of data and services. Most survey results reveal that users of multiple SaaS applications plan to increase their usage over time; which is both a challenge and an opportunity for data-integration vendors. Cloud storage is defined as the independent storage services in the cloud and is the most widely deployed cloud services.  It is currently being used to backup data, although it also serves as primary file- or content-storage options for web applications, like for Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3). Cloud storage is risk-free as data is already stored elsewhere without the need to be accessed by production applications. The innovation on cloud storage will focus on primary storage for enterprise applications in the cloud.
However, companies deciding for primary cloud storage must innovate on data-transport front.
Private cloud is considered as the delivery model choice of large enterprises and other risk-averse businesses. It has been noted that there are 2 interesting trends taking place – the advent of PaaS software designed to run on private clouds, and the OpenStack.
Private clouds are here to stay whether as a whole or part of a hybrid cloud environment.  For private cloud vendors, choosing to rely on their partners or building their own features will be a big decision. Two major trends can be expected in the coming years – advanced hybrid cloud capabilities, and a wave of innovation around higher-level features and specialized functions. In 2012, more than 1.7 million jobs in the field of cloud computing remained unoccupied, according to analysts firm IDC.

Believe it or not but the ability of the cloud to control device deployments on large scale depends entirely on the efficiency and speed of the wireless networks supporting it. The industry-IoT cloud alliances can enable the cloud-based solutions for communication hardware specialists, data storage specialists, analytics software leaders and mobile operators. By this time, almost all of us know that Internet of Things (IoT) has made its entry into every sector. Automatic communication instigated between electronic devices and infrastructures can salvage a great amount of money and energy. Enmetrics, founded in 2008, provides Internet of Things (IoT ) solutions for commercial environments. A high performing data center with minimum maintenance cost is crucial for business success. When this files are added to be synced to the folder no local copying should occur, just some kind of indexing. People are skeptical to upload stuff to any online cloud service without first being sure that nobody (not even the administrator of the service) would ever be able to see the file name nor the content of the files they upload.
For example if I share a folder of 100 GB of pictures with my family members, they would also need at least a 100 GB plan because the space of my shared folder will also count towards the capacity of their hired plan. All computer names where the application is installed should be showed online after login into the providers website. It would be great for example to be able to view pictures online, with possibility to view them as galleries like Dropbox does, etc.
This tool (still in beta) works as Dropbox (centralizing everything in a folder), but the nice thing is that if you want to share files or folders with another friend who also has AeroFS the synchronization will take place directly between your two computers, no middle server intervenes in the process. If we could define a password to a specific folder so that every time we need to access that folder a password will be prompted wouldn’t be nice and secure? This way anybody living on any country or travelling will always access their files as quickly as their connection allows them to. Logically all information you have on your service should be accessible from any of these devices.
Its frustrating to see how people ask for improvements in systems like Votebox (Dropbox suggestions) and the company doesn’t do anything. If you want to collaboratively work with others or want to benefit from deep application integration (especially from mobile or tablet apps), you can’t get around Dropbox.

As I found it, it has always been an issue for a lot of people and hasn’t been addressed at least since 2011. IaaS is also referred as Cloud Infrastructure service and is considered as the core of cloud computing. Investment bank, UBS reported that AWS earning statement could jump from $550 million in 2010 to $750 million in 2011. Despite this reported growth, some are still reluctant to consider commodity IaaS for mission-critical applications in the cloud. One difference between the two is the difficulty to distinguish enterprise IaaS adoption rates and market size from those of commodity IaaS. This includes tools to enable dynamic application development to advanced analytics services. In order to attract more enterprise developers, they have to loosen access to their platforms. Everyone needs a service that promises to fundamentally alter the way applications are developed, deployed and managed.  Still, it remains to be dependent on individual developers, web startups and enterprise developers. This integration could prove to be a valuable offering that will address the growing number of cloud services. It uses a virtual gateway to route files securely and reliably to cloud storage infrastructure from a number of providers. As vendors such as HP and Dell have storage businesses and public clouds, they could benefit from leveraging their storage expertise to make primary cloud storage a reality.
It won’t be attractive for customers if they rely only on the public Internet for uploading and downloading primary data. GigaOM survey reveals 63 percent of respondents utilize private clouds or hybrid clouds as the focus of their cloud strategies.
Since the number of IoT devices have started increasing, there is a gradual increase in the requirement of data storage, analysis and distribution. A cloud-based management platform can easily control multiple IoT applications at a time and provide the necessary analytics to extract the most advantage from this data for the benefit of this organization. They also need connectivity and device management to detect and monitor security threats across varied network operators. This will enable the support of more sleek and cost-effective systems for the organizations.


This will lead to an exponential raise in the amount of computing power required to manage all the transactional data coming in from various connected devices. It can enable remote diagnostics, data storage, consumer insight, advertising and much more. I actually just tested the app and it shows me an error when trying to sync contents of a folder on one of my external hard drives. Sharing with other customers from the same service could be unlimited and sharing with users that don’t have the service (direct links) could be limited to lets say 200 GB a month transfer.
This is not good, if I am already paying for my 100 GB and I want to share something with my family, then they should be able to even have a free account (if available) or the smallest plan (50 GB) and their storage shouldn’t be affected at all with what is shared with them.
Anybody that would have this email address would be able to send an email with for example attachments to that address. Doing polls or asking the users to participate and vote which are the next big changes the service could adopt would be a nice way to offer what the users expect from the service. Their implementation of block level sync doesn’t work for me and the support of external drives is just a work around.
I am keeping a close look to BitCasa, which offers unlimited, encrypted storage for USD 10 a month.
This year, AWS reveals that its S3 storage service hosts doubled as it now hosts more than 262 billion objects. A recent survey showed that 52 percent responded that security concerns are holding them back from using the cloud.
Survey respondents cited the need for more insights from operational data and more control. Enterprise IaaS clouds don’t need to attract a number of users as they are dealing mostly with revenues from larger deals. As part of IBM’s SmartCloud offering, it has promised Hadoop processing service in addition to its existing WebSphere and Cognos services. Moreover, IoT devices controlled in a cloud environment can manage the resources of the organizations more efficiently.
If you do have a good data analytics platform at the cloud management end, you should take advantage of the higher bandwidth networks. A specifically designed and reasonably priced cloud platform can provide a very cost-effective way to introduce new machine-machine applications in this slowly emerging IoT-cloud market. Moreover, it will also allow you to take the full advantage of IoT and all the benefits it has to offer. Integration with other already developed services as Google Docs or Microsoft Online services for some file types could work. Also permissions as described on point 5 would be needed. CrashPlan also offers this service and I?ve been doing some tests today with good results, the free version already allows you to backup to a friends computer. They still have half sync functionality and they have to make sharing of folders with other user much better.
Cloud users and providers cited “analytics” and “automation” as a service they’d like to have. Through this, organizations won’t commit entirely to public cloud resources and private cloud resources as they can use either model. A cloud-based system can allow you more ease in configuring, updating and troubleshooting through your device. We analyze your business operations and identify your specific requirements to design and deploy effective data centers that deliver state-of-the-art performance. This would prevent the miss usage of the service although of course if unlimited transfer for all users could be offered would be even better from a practical and marketing point of view.
The ideal service would give all the power to the user, they should be able to assign their own key before the data is transferred outside their computers. They will encrypt everything from the moment the data gets out from your computer so your friend will never know what you are backing up on theirs.
If your files are encrypted on your client, you can’t view or share files via web view because they are encrypted, right. Waiting for SugarSync to build a European data center or to just do something about their speed. If sharing needs to be done then a sharing key should be provisioned by the user and then shared to the person who will need to access that specific shared folder. As I commented before the only bad side is that CrashPlan is only a backup service and not a file sharing service. I am testing the platform syncing 650 GB of 130.000 files and I am having problems, still talking since weeks with the senior support team who is trying to address the issues talking directly with the development teams. And now we’re waiting for Bitcasa for proper syncing and a lot of beta-state and workflow fixes.
If you share a folder with a college, it doesn’t matter if you upload it to his PC or to the cloud server. Dropbox has that LAN feature where 2+ PCs in one LAN with a shared folder will get the files first by LAN and second comes the upload to Dropbox itself. But my problem is, both websites look very much the same and offer the same things for the same price. To me, it looks like it’s one of those former freehoster that looked for a serious business model after the fall of Megaupload.
