The group most associated with the development of standards based on SDN is the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). SDN lets network operators manage, configure, optimize and secure network resources quickly via dynamic, automated SDN programs, which are independent on proprietary software. SDN addresses the ever changing network requirements to the dynamic computing and software needs of data centers, cloud environments, etc. With the cloud is more flexible now in the IT collection, services and applications, there is virtually on demand from virtual server clusters. EMC has launched its latest Isilon Network Attached Storage (NAS) offering, bringing in support for the popular open source analytics platform Hadoop.


By integrating the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), EMC claims users can take advantage of the benefits of Big Data analytics without having to deal with multiple vendors. EMC claims to be the “first and only” scale-out NAS offering this integration, which will also provide the security, data movement and scalable storage features of a traditional NAS in one box. As well as HDFS, EMC has included its own open source analytics system Greenplum HD, showing its continued enthusiasm for the open software community. Apache’s Hadoop project has been active for six years, but only reached version 1.0 - meaning it is recognised for enterprise use - at the end of 2011. EMC first made its intentions for Hadoop clear back in May at its annual EMC World conference in Las Vegas.
TweetHitachi has announced in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University, a new technology capable of recording and reproducing digital data using quartz glass for hundreds of millions of years. The new technology uses a laser to mottle a piece of quartz glass with dots to store binary codes.
Hitachi said the new technology will be suitable for storing historically important items such as cultural artifacts and public documents, as well as data individuals that want to leave for posterity.

Hitachi Data Systems also announced a unified storage solution that provides enterprise-class virtualization capabilities for all data types. As with all storage technologies, the developments have been moved from the physical to the electronic and most recently to the cloud. Different companies own different servers, and offer cloud storage services that utilize these servers. Cloud storage can be a great way to sync all your documents and pictures across multiple devices, as many of these services have app versions that work on tablet and phones. Email, e-commerce, search, social networks, cloud computing, and the web as we know it is all good examples. SDN allows system administrators to network services more easily through abstraction of lower level functionality into virtual services. For instance, in data centers SDN can be used to reduce energy usage by allowing some routers to be powered down during off-peak periods. A secondary reason for this shift in focus is because Cisco recently announced that as part of its offer of SDN, it would provide API across multiple platforms.
An advantage of this approach is that it allows very detailed access and controls the network elements, but does not provide a central point and is vendor specific.
With SDN, network flows are controlled at the level of abstraction of the global network, rather than at the individual device level. The ONF was launched in 2011 and has a vision to make the OpenFlow and Linux Foundation’s new OpenDaylight based SDN as the new standard for networks. The driving trends for a new network paradigm include the rise of cloud services, focus on Big Data, consumerization of IT, and changing network patterns.
Due to the increasing virtualization of networks, we will see a high demand and a correspondingly significant market growth for SDN in the coming years. Service providers can offer higher pay services by policy-based control and analysis in a more flexible way.


Providers are also working on multi-tenant, virtual switches with ports spread across multiple physical systems. There is also no doubt that in the current environment, SDN is only suitable for early adopters.
The second is the availability of a wide range of applications that leverage centralized control inherent in most forms of SDN. Although many companies had already begun integrating the system, January saw a plethora of launches from high profile companies putting their money on the open source solution - Oracle and RainStor to name just two.
