What IS surprising to me, however, is that security is — more often than not — an afterthought in Big Data implementations. To avoid this risk by properly securing Big Data repositories, you should devise an up-front strategy on how to lock down your sensitive assets, tightly control access to them and gain good ongoing visibility into exactly who is accessing what sensitive data.

In our view, a private cloud is a computing environment which provides hosted services to a limited subscriber base, generally within a single enterprise behind a firewall.
Private clouds are a conservative’s answer to a regular public cloud solution.  Instead of losing sleep worrying about control, safety and costs of hosting data at a third party vendor’s data center, enterprises build their very own in-company, and mostly in-premises private cloud solution.
The chargeback metering mechanisms are an added plus for the higher management, for they provide a relatively accurate picture of the “cost of IT” in the organization.
The hardware (servers and other resources) on the network should be under centralized control and standardized. There should be very lose coupling across services, effectively allowing services across different environments based on different parameters, transparently. The infrastructure management and maintenance should be automated, reducing the overall manual dependence and increasing efficiency of the overall system. These items listed above are not really axioms which HAVE to be followed in order to justify an enterprise installation to be a private cloud; however the more of the above list a company follows, a more mature and stable environment is promised. In 2012, more than 1.7 million jobs in the field of cloud computing remained unoccupied, according to analysts firm IDC. Cloud marketing has the ability to drastically change the ways in which they reach and engage their audience, particularly with regard to distributing and storing mission-critical data. More and more companies encourage their employees to work on their devices, thus reducing the cost of computer equipment, but also increase the cost to maintain licenses and safety.
Despite the inclination to wait until all of the cloud’s kinks have been worked out, holding off on cloud initiatives until the industry matures won’t guarantee success. The software industry is undergoing major changes by trends such as cloud, SaaS, mobile technology and the “consumerization of IT”. For this next article in the series, were going to be looking at Microsoft’ Azure’s Table Storage service. Before getting into the specific details of Azure Tables, let’s take a quick stroll through comparing Azure Tables and our popular relation database. There is a high probability that you have a familiarity with Relational Databases (RDBMS) and think along those terms when it comes to storing and structuring data in a database.  However, Azure Table Storage is not a relational database, but a NoSQL database, so there is a completely different approach that needs to be taken when we set out to host our data in Azure’s Table Storage. When we think about relational databases, we think about single table schemas, table relationships with foreign keys and constraints, stored procedures and columns and rows. Since Azure Tables are not a perfect fit for every time we need to persist data, let’s look at some of the major differences between Azure Tables and relational databases to help draw that defining line.
If you have had anything to do with developing an application with a database backend, you probably have seen how the requirements generally start off with having some data that needs to be persisted. With Azure Tables, the most important question that you have to answer before you’re ready to persist data to Table Storage is, what are you going to do with the data?
Even though every partition will be served by a Partition Server (that can be responsible for multiple partitions), it is when partitions under heavy load can be designated its own Partition Server.  It is this distribution of load across partitions that allow your Azure Table Storage to be highly scalable.
So let’s stop for a second and think about this; if you design your table with a single partition key.
Unfortunately, partition servers also create a boundary that will directly affect performance.  Therefore, in contrast to the all-in-one partition approach, creating unique partitions for every entity is a pattern that that will cost you the ability to perform batch operations (discussed later), incur performance penalties for insert throughput as well as when queries cross partition boundaries.
Finally, sorting is not something that is controlled after the data has been persisted.  Data in your table will be sorted in ascending order first by the partition key, then sorted ascending by the row key. Row keys also provide a second applied ascending sort order after the applied ascending sort order of the partition key.  Therefore, depending on your circumstances, further thought might be required on how you want data to be sorted when retrieved. Therefore, the decision you need to make is how will the data be queried, what are the common queries that you expect to be made? The most important question you need to ask before using or designing your Azure Tables, how will the data be queried. The table itself is associated with a specific Azure Storage Account.  Therefore, if we want to perform crud and query operations on specific table in our storage account, roughly, we will be required to instantiate objects that represent our storage account, a specific table client object within our storage account and finally, a reference to the table.
Third, through the Table Client object, obtain an object that references a table within your storage account. As mentioned earlier, creating the storage credentials object, you need to provide it your storage account name and either the primary or secondary base64 key.  This is all information we covered in the article on blob storage, but you can obtain this information from your Azure Portal by selecting “Manage Access Keys” under “Storage”, where it will list your storage accounts you have created.
As you might have noticed, were using a combination of the model#, size and gender for the Row key.  Depending on what common queries you determine will be used for data retrieval from your table, this key can have significant importance on available unique keys within a partition and sort order. This is just a note that the previous DynamicTableEntity wasn’t required to make changes to an existing entity.  But you’re applications entity POCO’s might change, while you want to retain existing property information, or possibly your application has a split persistent model that that needs to merge the data in an entity. And we can see how it has completely altered the structure and data for the existing table entity. When considering your options, focus on identifying your organization's requirements using the five factors depicted in figure below. In terms of traction in the market, inquiries with Gartner clients have shown that email is most often the leading edge of archiving decisions. Consider the Variety and Types of Data and Information SourcesToday's email archiving solutions are evolving to support multiple content types beyond email, and it's not uncommon to see products and services that support email, SMS, IMs and social media in the same archive repository.
Interestingly the fastest-growing data types - such as email (on-premises or hosted), IM, SMS, mobile and social media - are good candidates for hosted archiving.
Gartner clients who are moving their archives to the cloud tend to share some characteristics.1 In some instances, companies have a corporate mandate to move anything that can be hosted to the cloud.
Take Into Account Your Organization's Position on SecuritySome organizations operate with a corporate mandate or just a corporate culture of keeping critical business information behind the firewall for reasons of security or control, or otherwise. Similarly, internal or regulatory requirements may give some organizations a need to ensure that their data is stored within the boundaries of a particular jurisdiction (such as a country or region). If your organization is comfortable with the data security provided by a SaaS solution, include cloud-based services in your review.
Understand Your Employee and Administrative Access RequirementsWill your employees or system administrators require offline access to the archived data?
Many organizations find the administrative and supervisory tools available from cloud email archiving vendors more user-friendly than on-premises tools. The compute infrastructure of hosted archived data solutions can enable faster search and indexing than on-premises solutions, due to the leveraging of that infrastructure build-out by the hosted provider. Assess Staff Capacity and IT InfrastructureAssess the capabilities and capacity of your IT infrastructure and operations (I&O) staff and your IT infrastructure. First, determine if your existing staff has the skill set and the time required to develop a cost-effective email archiving system that is easy to use for key stakeholders (such as legal and compliance teams). Factor in Price and TCOIn many cases, the cost for hosted email archiving is slightly higher than for a well-oiled on-premises solution, but not prohibitively so.
You should also consider the intangible cost of neglect over time, which often arises with archiving implementations. A PUPM pricing model that could include add-ons, such as social media, Web pages, mobile, e-discovery, etc. Moving your archive repository from one solution to another can be quite costly, so keep this in mind during the negotiations. File archiving is usually more cost-effective on-premises, because the price for the hosted archiving of data is calculated by capacity and the price for full SaaS solutions hasn't dropped enough to match on-premises pricing. Strategic Planning AsssumptionBy 2016, 80% of organizations will move to a cloud model for enterprise information archiving, up from 30% in 2011.
RapidShare suggests that all uploads be scanned for copyrighted content, which would probably put a stake in the heart of fair use once and for all. Another option is convergent encryption, which is perhaps a bit less secure, but still better than nothing.
So instead of finding your name in the next article about identity theft or online fraud, sure up your computer’s security. Some stop at virtualization, other take it at the automation of the provisioning and elasticity, and some others take it to the final level and talk about chargebacks. Starting with the next section we’ll go over creating tables and persisting data.  But, this brings us to the most important point when dealing with Azure Tables, design.
Therefore, the table is designed to house that data.  Its only afterwards that thought is put into how that information needs to be retrieved and utilized.  Sound familiar? Such as in the case of a table that stores store product information, but you decide to make your partition key “products” and all entities fall under this single partition.  How can Azure partition your data so that it can automatically scale out your table for efficient performance?
Therefore, if sort is of importance, you will need to determine the ways partition key’s and row keys are defined.  A good example is how 11 would come before 2 unless padded with 0’s. Based on that answer, you need to determine how the data can be grouped into partitions.  The following is a list of guidelines that is not exhaustive, but can help making table design decisions easier. For the creation of tables, I would advice you create the tables ahead of time when you can. This HTTP response can provide more insight to the results of a table operation.  Going along in this article you’ll see that I capture the returned result just for completion, but it isn’t always necessary. Evolving trends for remote working and Bring Your Own Device services are pushing most companies to enable access to their corporate data from external locations, which is turn opens up further areas of potential security risk.

Assess each solution's advantages within the context of your organization's requirements in five specific areas. Furthermore, the rise in the popularity of all things cloud may place you under pressure to focus on hosted solutions that might not ultimately be the best fit for your organization's needs.
Once you understand how your needs align with the advantages and risks of each offering, it becomes much easier to choose an appropriate system.
On-premises and cloud (software as a service [SaaS]) options are more attractive alternatives to personal archives, such as PSTs and other email storage approaches, because organizations have better control of the data for compliance, risk and cost needs. For example, it's a common approach to archive information that is stored in databases by partitioning the database and moving a small part of it to storage, where it resides in a compressed state.
For example, use typical on-premises archiving to support performance, and use cloud-based services to retain retired data from applications. We are also seeing companies choose to send all non-mission-critical applications or data to cloud-based archives.
Depending on the vendor's approach, hosted services may or may not be a suitable option for these organizations, but you must understand the vendor's approach to storing data and the jurisdictions within which it operates. However, Gartner has found that email archiving SaaS providers are encrypting data in flight and at rest, with most organizations adhering to Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) 16, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 27001 and other cloud services standards (see SAS 70 Is Gone, So What Are the Alternatives?). Many of Gartner's clients from the financial services and other highly regulated industries are using hosted email archiving solutions and are comfortable with the level of security of their data.
On-premises email archiving will require more resources than hosted services, and that will add storage and other IT infrastructure on top of an already taxed IT department.
Next, decide if these responsibilities are more or less important than the many other competing priorities on which your staff must focus.
If your archiving system (email or other) will be connected to other on-premises systems (such as security, storage or e-discovery), then on-premises archiving may deliver better performance results for you and your stakeholders, such as legal and compliance teams.


Systems are not updated, and shortcuts are taken on administration and storage; therefore, access to the data when needed can be more costly than is otherwise necessary. Very low-cost storage cloud targets that can be used for archived data need to be carefully evaluated, because integration is still complex, as is the maintenance of the cloud as a target. The web will provide the services and storage you need, and it’s safer than keeping files locally.
The plan also indicates the files uploaded should be private by default, with the user being forced to explicitly share a file publicly. With convergent encryption, your personal unencrypted data is used to derive the key that will be used to encrypt it.
A little Bill here, a little Tax there, next thing you know, if you want to use a Cloud service, you have to agree not to use encryption.
Big Data architectures store and analyze very large volumes of data from social networks, customer interactions, sensors, IT systems and other sources, but they typically lack the security controls that analytic engines need. Due to this traction, this best-practice research will use email as the primary use case for archiving decisions. Also, cloud email archiving providers charge on a per user per month (PUPM) basis for services that may include the archiving of additional content types, making cloud email archiving providers an attractive option. If such data is stored in the cloud, it could be a real challenge to give users real-time access to it. This approach is becoming more common, as well over 50% of the conversations with customers around email archiving include cloud options. Explain your organization's position to prospective vendors to determine if their offerings are a match for your needs. Many of the hosted email archiving solutions allow you to cache the email archive, whereas files and other archived data types may only be available while connected online. However, retrieval is often done for discovery purposes or other reasons that don't require immediate access, and usually not as time sensitive as, for example, with primary or backup storage. But in the wake of the Megaupload raid, some cloud storage companies are getting cold feet and are rushing to placate the emissaries of the content industry, such as the RIAA and MPAA.
RapidShare also says that sites should hire significant numbers of new staff to actively scan user data when there is reasonable suspicion an account is being used for piracy.To be clear, RapidShare is advocating a system by which a cloud storage provider can look at your personal data if Fox, Universal, or any other content provider suspects you of wrongdoing. So with this technology, two identical files will still be identical after encryption, but unreadable without the original file. Collecting, managing and analyzing large data sets in order to extract value and gain new insights just makes good business sense. In an age of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks and APTs that can easily breach perimeter defenses, if your organization doesn’t have security controls in place that are architecturally and environmentally consistent with a Big Data cluster architecture, Big Data = Big Risk to your business.
Services can be enabled to provide Anti-Spam and IDPS, all of which can be configured and managed via a single interface to reduce complexity. If you plan to archive sizable data stores, recognize that the cost of moving that information across the wire could be quite high.
Conversely, some critical information sources are more appropriate for on-premises archives.
We only expect this to increase so that, by 2016, 80% of organizations will use the cloud for at least part of their data archiving needs.
All that might add up to a dark and stormy future for the cloud, and your data.The RapidShare business model is not terribly dissimilar from that of Megaupload. Not only does this smack of privacy invasion, it has to make you question the innate security of these services.Offering automatic encryption of uploaded data is common, but if a cloud storage company can look at your files, that means they have a copy of your encryption key.
This would permit a cloud storage provider to scan for known pirated files while keeping your unique personal data completely private.Even the harsh measures outlined by RapidShare didn’t go over well with the RIAA, which said the proposal fell short of what is needed. Big business keeps getting bigger by gobbling us up and spitting us back out, because they know the individual consumer can’t compete with their million dollar law teams. These information sources - which could include file servers, integrated databases and custom enterprise applications - often lend themselves better to on-premises archives. Also, cloud archive vendors provide quality integration between the on-premises applications and the cloud-archived data.
As such, the company has been looking for ways to distance itself from its unfortunate competitor. Some services, for instance Carbonite Backup, allow users to keep the encryption keys private. We can’t know if any of these policies will become the standard, but copyright holders aren’t going to stop pushing. Data can be moved from on-premises to the cloud and vice versa via shipping physical disks or tape, but that adds to the cost and complexity, and introduces the opportunity for error. At the National Press Club, RapidShare recently went a step further by laying out a framework it feels cloud storage providers should adopt to better combat piracy — and it’s straight out of the RIAA’s playbook.
If RapidShare had its way, standard practice in the industry would be to store your data in a way that it could be decrypted without your consent.So what’s the alternative if you really want privacy for your data? They’re riding high on the takedown of Megaupload and really seem to want strangers rifling through your files in search of copyright violations.
Larger data stores might also make hosted services cost-prohibitive if the pricing is calculated on a capacity basis. In this dystopian future, you might have to encrypt your files before uploading them anywhere. You can’t work with that encrypted data online without decrypting it, thus ending up in the same vulnerable state you were in before. New technologies that rely on different forms of encryption could be a good middle ground, but the service providers will have to support them.Homomorphic encryption is an exciting idea that would give you much more flexibility in cloud storage.
This type of encryption allows you to keep a database in the cloud, work with it, and keep it encrypted the whole time. Homomorphic encryption can allow you to decrypt that result without ever knowing what the original data said.
