BT's decision to buy EE might have come as a surprise to many, but it seems that the company has been, one might say, obsessed with providing a converged telecommunications solution for nearly 17 years.BT launched a service called One Phone (not to be confused with Android One, HTC One or OnePlus One) in 1998 (and relaunched it last year). Get the best tech deals, reviews, product advice, competitions, unmissable tech news and more! The telecoms giant has confirmed it will close the BT Yahoo portal during the summer and that users with a BT Yahoo email account will be also be switched over to the BT mailbox. All messages will remain intact and email addresses will be the same, but users may be prompted to change their password, BT said. Nick Wong, director of online for BT’s consumer division, claimed customers would get all the features they expect from a modern email service. Meanwhile, BT continues to grow its customer base on the back of its high-speed broadband services.

This number is expected to grow as BT pushes ahead with an aggressive strategy, which undercuts competitors such as BSkyB and Virgin. Earlier in May, the firm announced that all BT Broadband customers would get free access to its three sports channels.
BT is set to expand the number of people employed by its OpenReach engineering arm by focusing on the recruitment of women and former Armed Forces personnel.
The telco is planning to create 1,600 new engineering jobs within OpenReach, which is the division responsible for rolling out fibre broadband services across the UK. In a statement, announcing the recruitment drive, BT said the new recruits will help drive up levels of “customer service and bring the technology to even more communities”, as well as fix faults and maintain its existing services. The company said it expects a significant number of the engineering roles to be taken on by former members of the Armed Forces, and is particularly keen on bringing more female engineers on board. Joe Garner, CEO of Openreach, said the new recruits will bolster the firm’s efforts to maintain the pace of its ongoing fibre broadband rollout. The firm has over 1.5 million customers using broadband with 270,000 fibre connections in the last quarter. This will include coverage of 38 Barclays Premier League matches, as well as access to Rugby and Tennis events. The spectrum, BT said, could be used to provide fast 4G connectivity to its customers with "an enhanced range of mobile broadband services" while building on its existing strength in Wi-Fi.Back then, its former CEO, Lord Livingston, confirmed that they did not intend to build a national network.
Other than superfast broadband, BT could potentially offer HD voice to all its customers (thanks to DECT CAT-iq compatibility) as well as 4K-ready content. What could that mean for BT customers? And let's not forget the formidable home automation market (hello Nest) as Sagemcom also positions its router as a home aggregator to avoid any extra box at home.
