The slowdown’s bite is apparent, but the hunger for a seat in any of the top B-schools remains as strong as ever. It is that time of the year again when business schools start preparing to take in a fresh batch of students, and student aspirants in turn prepare for the dreaded CAT, or common admission test, to get into these schools. So this year we also have a separate ranking of executive programmes, in which ISB Hyderabad comes out tops. Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, is known for its low tuition fee and high quality education. Indeed, other examination formats bear him out since they have seen an increase in numbers.
The other trend is that fewer B-school aspirants are looking overseas, thanks to the uncertain economic climate in many developed countries, especially Europe, and the continued fall of the rupee. Every year up to 300,000 students go abroad to study further, of which a large number study management. Indian B-schools are also looking to bolster their brand value through participation in global surveys and gaining international accreditations. Business schools are also latching on to the growing appetite among second generation business scions for a professional approach to management. A major part of the impetus for this shift from corporate jobs to start-ups is coming from the B-schools.
What is also visible is an overall improvement in scoring by colleges, a trend that started last year showing that most colleges have got their act together and have been engaged in improving their systems.
Considering all that enthusiasm in the start-up space, Outlook presents the ultimate guide to setting up a start-up.
In the issue dated October 5, 2015, in the table for India's Top 100 B-Schools, Rank 62 and 72 should read as Jaipuria Institute of Management instead of Jaipuria Institute of Science. The initial task comprised drawing up a comprehensive list of B-schools across the country which offer a two-year full-time management course, and are recognised by a government body like the AICTE, NAAC and AIU. Various B-schools across India were contacted for participation—130 colleges responded, providing their objective data. To ensure authenticity, an audit mechanism was in place involving physical audits to verify the authenticity of the data provided. To arrive at the final objective scores, marks obtained by colleges on the five parameters were derived on the basis of the data provided by the institutes and summed together. I wonder what purpose this ranking fulfills, except to create a hype for the top ranked institutes.
What worth do these MBAs really have, when business in India depends entirely on getting lucrative government contracts, mining, etc.?
Finally, political parties came together to pass the Goods and Services Tax in the Rajya Sabha. We take you on a tour of the Top Ten B-schools in the Business Today-Nielsen 2008 ranking of Top 30 B-schools in the country.

Know about latest happenings in education sphere (Management, Engineering, Medicine & Allied, Degree Programs, Study Abroad and Professional courses). Given the increasing trend of people going back to school after working for a few years, this ranking had become necessary. Initial reports of the number of students appearing for the CAT, whose scores form the basis of admission at IIMs and other top B-schools, show a drop from 214,000 last year to 196,000 this year.
For instance, the All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) has added numbers of up to 140,000 applicants within two years. In 2012, for example, there were over 54,000 Indian international student enrollments in Australia, of which more than 31,000 were enrolled in management and commerce courses.
The 37-year-old graduated in the Post Graduate Programme for Executives, Class of 2013, at IIM-C, instead of going abroad. Leading B-schools such as IIM-A, IIM-C and Indian school of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, have gained some traction in global rankings.
The number of IIMs has increased, which means getting good faculty is more difficult than before. This was unleashed by the ISB with its big-ticket Manag-ement Programme for Family Business. Similarly, with the corporate sector constantly in the spotlight, we look at how the reservations debate in the private corporate sector has completely died down. Similarly, Rank 93 should be Pune Institute of Business Management instead of Institute of Business Management. The AICTE has ruined management education by allowing anybody to open a management  institute. With fraudulent degrees on the rise, what we need is a portal to do background checks for our candidates, something that has become essential as jobs across BPOs and KPOs have grown, and the need to get the right people with the right experience has arisen.
This is the first Olympics being held in South America and is going on even as a majority Brazilians are unhappy with their rulers. The institutions are as much remarkable for the education they impart as for their beautiful campuses. This will give our readers the added advantage of alumni views to validate whether their business school’s education actually faced up to market reality. Among those who declined were Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B), and IIM, Lucknow (IIM-L). XAT, or Xavier Admission Test, conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur, has seen the number of applicants go up to 90,000 from 60,000 last year.
Six of the B-schools in our survey have acquired international accreditation (see Home and the World). There is increasing pressure to do more and better research, which the faculty seem to be resisting. Small beginnings are to be found in the way B-schools are encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation.

Today, many others, such as the International Management Institute (IMI) Delhi, have launched similar initiatives.
Given that it seems like we are all now playing a part in a big sound-and-light production, what does one make of the noise around start-ups? What is helping this new phenomenon is the easy availability of guidance and handholding by experts and, most important, finance—thanks to the ever-ready band of venture capitalists and angel investors who are ready to back new, untried ideas.
The real churn is at the mid-level colleges, where some have improved positions by vitalising parameters. Last year, looking at a good response in participation by B-schools to our survey, we had increased the list from 75 to 100. On the other hand, the Modi government is keen that the sector stop complaining and get down to doing what it does best—dreaming big, jumping in, taking risks. Students were asked to fill in another questionnaire reviewing their own institute; this was done to understand their outlook about their institute. Next, to reach the final composite scores, total perceptual and objective scores were given equal weightage of 50 per cent each and the total scores were combined to arrive at the final scores and rankings. In challenging times, companies tend to scrutinise the cost of new recruitments closely, he points out, with some even postponing them. In India, I realised that IIM-A, IIM-B and IIM-C were the schools that could provide me with the experience I was looking for,” he says. No prizes for guessing which school is doing it best – here too, IIM-A is the winner. The business schools are thankfully aware of this development as most institutions are weaving entrepreneurship into their course curriculum to give support to young businessmen.
The churn at lower levels continues—there are many new names making it to the Outlook rankings this year.
The global gurus spin wisdom, Steve Jobs is dissected, and we serve up an entrepreneurship quiz (give it a shot on pg 108). At the same time, there is a marginally increased emphasis on research facilitation and industry exposure. NASSCOM, I know, has one such portal for candidates to upload their profiles and register for a fee.
He is now country head at EiP, India, the Indian JV entity with a UK-based management consultancy called Inspiring Business Performance, or IBP. Given a scenario where B-schools are faced with new challenges, we look at the various issues facing them and how they are coping with the pace at which industry’s demands are changing.
