MacBook users need to back up their hard drives full of pictures, documents, media files and more.
Click on the Apple icon button in the upper left corner of the screen and choose System Preferences. Apple includes Time Machine as part of OS X making it possibly the simplest Mac backup option. Click on Select Disk to choose the external drive you wish to use for backup and then OK to close the dialog box.
The box that pops up when the user clicks the Select Disk button offers the option to choose a disk connected to the Mac or the person can choose an AirPort Time Capsule. Since Time Machine doesn’t offer an offsite option, use one of the following as well. Every Apple user account comes with at least 5GB of free iCloud storage, but that will fill up quickly if the user plans to use it for things like photos or other media files. Time Machine is a great tool for Mac backup, but it’s not as powerful as making a mirror image or copy of the entire hard drive. The user can either Schedule the cloning of the disk for a later time  or click on Copy Now to do it right away.
A slightly more powerful and polished program called Carbon Copy Cloner costs a little more than Super Duper. If the user turns on Safety Net (a switch below the destination drive button), the program will protect files that the user deleted since their last backup as space allows. Your Internet service provider limits the amount of bandwidth you can use in a month and full backups will eat that up quickly.
Conflict management controls whether to delete files when copying a similar file from one place to another. Built-in file viewer so users can see what they’re copying (great for pictures and videos). If you want to use a cloud backup solution for backing up just your personal files, consider using one of the great file syncing services. A 3rd-party cloud backup service that offers the most complete option, but it also costs more than most.
Backup – use this to start backups either to a local drive or over Wi-Fi or through the Internet to the iDrive servers. Restore – when you need to put a file back in place after loss, use the Restore section.
In the above screen shot, notice that iDrive offers iDrive account backup and local backup. Next, turn on iCloud and get the 200GB option, unless you know you’ll need more space. For added security, clone your disks regularly and then store the cloned drive somewhere else.
You can configure your iThings to automatically Sync with a Mac and that does back up some data, but not a full back up. To fully back up your iThing to your Mac, tether it via USB and in iTunes > Summary, click Back Up Now.
You can see when the last full iCloud and Mac back ups happened in iTunes > Summary (red circle). You may see this message “Not Enough Storage – This phone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud Storage Available. Apple is giving you only 5GB of free iCloud storage and that is not sufficient to meet your backup needs most of the time. In general, most of your iCloud storage space is using to backup your Photos and Videos from iPhone. Ideally, the iCloud backup is good for storing your contacts, email account and other settings. Your contacts and app setup configuration should be the first priority to backup rather than any other media. Before you worry about the backup space, check on your iPhone to see what are the apps taking all your backup space.
If you have MAC and setup the same iCloud account for both, your computer may consume iCloud memory.
If you couldn’t free up the memory that you need, please check your music files especially those are you set as offline files.

If you think that your photos and videos are so precious and turn off backup for the is not a good idea, there are lot of other cloud services that offer you free space even up to one Terabyte of free space. With portable devices, therea€™s always a risk of losing or damaging your hardware when youa€™re out and about. To save spacea€”and reduce upload timesa€”your purchases won't be stored; instead, Backup will make a record of all the purchased iOS apps, books, music, and TV shows on your device. While Apple offers two methods of backing up your iOS devicea€”backing up via iCloud, or backing up to your computera€”you can only use one at a time. I recently had my iPhone replaced due to a sticky power button but had a few problems when restoring from my iCloud backup. The second problem was a little more fiddly, and I still don’t really understand what the problem is. The result was that my apps would start downloading and as soon as the progress bar filled, the app icons would flash white and the app would disappear. Some data was not restored, for instance, apps that were removed from the App Store for legal reasons.
I tried the suggested, syncing the iTunes, but that just gave me a new copy of the apps with all my app data missing. Thanks great tip, I had to replace my iPhone 5 (volume up broke) and the iCloud restore gave me the incomplete error. Apple includes a couple of tools within OS X that help with Mac backup, but users may want to consider some third-party tools as well. To make sure you’re selecting the right one hover over the icons till the label System Preferences pops up over the mouse cursor.
That equates to 3 copies of your data on at least 2 kinds of media with at least 1 offsite backup. If you plan to use iCloud for all of your files and data, then consider buying more storage. If your MacBook hard drive fails, then you can plug in the second hard drive and press the OPTION button on your keyboard while booting the Mac. There are a lot of features and some automation that makes it easy to set it and forget it. This protects those files on the destination drive without copying them back to the source drive of the Mac. Users can customize how they receive notifications when the process completes: an email or using the OS X system notifications.
The app looks like Finder, but shows two panes making it easy to copy from one drive to another quickly. Tell the program to do all backups at night or during the part of the day when the computer’s not in use but turned on. It lets you select specific files or folders and chose to either put them back where they were originally or you can download them to a different spot, like your Mac Desktop.
For example, remote backup control through their website and mobile apps so you can reach your files from anywhere. Download them from the web in the form of a single ZIP file, on a flash drive (up to 128GB) or a USB hard drive (up to 4TB).
You have 3 copies of your important files, on the internal drive, in Time Machine and in the cloud.
Yes, but there is a catch a€” only the iCloud will be a full and automatic back up while backing up to your Mac will be strictly manual.
You can also choose to back to your Mac (this computer), but you will need to remember to tether it periodically a€” automatic back up is always best. If you don’t want to spend more money on iCloud storage, then only the option is to limit apps that utilizing the iCloud Storage back up space. You can always control and select what you exactly backup into the iCloud space and leave some space in iCloud drive to sync the future contact updates.
The Photo & Camera app will be the number one most of the time for consuming that memory pace from iCloud.
You may need to trade off between the limited iCloud storage space and the number off apps that you can back up. You can utilize any one of these cloud services to backup your photos and other media files almost in real time. If you need to restore from a backup, that information is used to restore your purchases from the iTunes store.

The initial iCloud Backup takes a few minutes, depending on how much data needs to be uploaded. We give you the scoop on what's new, what's best and how to make the most out of the products you love. I managed to solve them all so I thought it might help a few others if I described my findings here. Wait a few minutes and then attempt the restore again while connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network. The three copies will include the one on the computer, one on the local backup media and one in offsite backup like the cloud or a drive that you put at another place. The utility backs up everything on the Mac to the external drive so that users can get their files back if they lose them or if the computer stops working, gets lost or stolen. All the connected drives will appear and you can pick the external drive and boot to it to get your Mac up and running.
It asks the user to point to their source drive in the first drop down box at the top of the SuperDuper app window. This makes it possible to keep backups without cluttering the internal hard drive of the Mac.
This makes it the best option in the roundup for those who don’t mind paying for a solid 3rd-party cloud backup service.
The second option does the Mac backup to a local drive: an external drive or a network attached drive. It also syncs files between all mobile devices and backs up Instagram and Facebook accounts.
The files are on two different media (three if you count the cloud which serves as the offsite backup). You’ll be able to just update your iOS device without any trouble, most likely over the air or by connecting to iTunes. It it better to give first priority for your Contacts, Calendar and Email Settings to keep it safe. With iCloud Backup, however, you can back up your iOS device's data automatically, even when youa€™re not using it. For example, if you have several videos in your camera roll, the amount of time it takes to perform the first backup will be longer.
In the end only about half of my apps were restored – the rest appeared to be deleted.
If the data that was not restored also exists in your iTunes library, you can sync it back to your iOS device via USB cable sync as a work around. Once the homescreen appeared again, I immediately tapped on one of the apps that previously failed to restore. Now you can use it to reformat the internal drive and then mirror the external drive back to the internal drive and you’re ready to go. Use it to share files or folders with others and view your backed up images or videos within the app.
Users can add more files to the backup since Backblaze backs up user files but excludes apps and OS X files by default.
No fuss, no muss. However, you do most likely want to make a backup in case things go awry during the update process. Subsequent backups can take mere seconds to a few minutes, as, like Time Machine backups, iCloud will only back up what has changed on your device. Users can also backup selective data with things like iCloud, manual backup or file syncing services. Use the app to see your files and download them after the service backs them up from the computer. Click on Map This and it opens a map to show where the computer last logged into the Internet. Once the first app had succeeded all the other apps followed without me needing to tap on them individually.
When you upgrade to iOS 7, should anything go wrong, you’ll know you can get your stuff back when you figure it all out.
