Symantec Backup Exec is an integrated product that protects virtual and physical environments, simplifies both backup and disaster recovery, and offers unmatched recovery capabilities. It’s been a long wait but Symantec finally adds deduplication to its flagship Windows backup software. Along with the deduplication option, this latest version of Backup Exec delivers plenty of other new features with the focus also on protecting virtualised environments. There’s fashionably late and there’s just plain late and Symantec is definitely the latter as it’s only now that the new Backup Exec 2010 (BE2010) finally brings data deduplication to the masses.
Another big difference is CA was the first and only backup software vendor to include deduplication as a core component at no extra cost. CA opted to deduplicate only at the backup server primarily as it’s faster than doing it client-side and doesn’t introduce any performance overheads at the client. There is a third option as BE2010 supports Symantec’s OpenStorage technology and can integrate with intelligent disk services such as its PureDisk and other third party products. To implement deduplication in BE2010, Symantec ported over its NetBackup PureDisk solution which essentially uses the same hash-based chunking technology as everyone else.
Most of the other new features lay in the shadow of deduplication but BE2010 also offers an archiving option, which is based on a light version of its Enterprise Vault. John Joyner reviews the new Symantec Backup Exec management pack and what it can do to help streamline backup checks and alerts for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. In a long overdue and welcome move, Symantec released this summer a Backup Exec 2010 management pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM). Symantec is a major player in the backup software space, holding an estimated 60% market share. Symantec has a software option for a Central Administration Server that consolidates backup job management across Backup Exec servers.
The Backup Exec management pack increases the value of Backup Exec for customers that use Microsoft System Center products for systems management. In the background, two discovery processes will automatically check all Windows Computers for the presence of the Backup Exec server or remote agent software, and discovered instances are added to one of four SCOM groups: one group for each of the three releases of the latest Backup Exec 2010 version, and one group for all versions of Backup Exec prior to Backup Exec 2010.
The management pack supports all versions of Backup Exec server and agent, versions 11.0 and later.

Powered by Symantec V-Ray technology, Backup Exec restores entire servers, critical Microsoft applications, and VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments to dramatically minimize business downtime. However, if you want free server-side deduplication and better reporting facilities then check out CA’s ARCserve r12.5.
Computer Associates (CA) delivered deduplication in its ARCserve r12.5, which was released nearly a year ago so Symantec has certainly taken its time to implement this red-hot technology. Symantec offers this as a separately chargeable module but does provide quite a few extra features. BE2010 offers client-side and server-side deduplication so you can decide which is better for your network. It breaks down the data into segments and computes a hash value, or fingerprint, for each block of data which it stores in a separate index file.
This can be applied to both file and Exchange servers where BE2010 uses rules to determine what should be archived. The last time Symantec released a management pack for Backup Exec, it was for the Backup Exec 12.5 release in 2008.
If you need to copy lots of backup job details between servers, or enforce complex backup policies across backup media server farms, this can be a great option. It's a fundamentally sound idea to present server backup status in the same "pane of glass" context as other server health metrics.
This is important for large environments that may have many different Backup Exec software versions in use.
The health explorer for the Backup Exec server component rolls-up the status of 21 monitors for each backup server, making it easy to spot critical events like backup failures, and operator-assistance issues like "waiting on tape to be inserted" events.

He is co-author of the "System Center Operations Manager: Unleashed" book series from Sams Publishing, and is developing cloud-based management solutions based on the Microsoft System Center 2012 suite. It provides access to a system of instant messaging with lights on and group conversation … Lync has been designed for companies and integrates with Outlook by providing the same security features and backup.
If the fingerprint for an incoming block matches one in the index then instead of storing it, BE2010 updates its reference file with the address of that block already in the data file. That older management pack was actually written for Operations Manager 2007's predecessor Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 (MOM).
For small operations with just one Backup Exec server, it's not too difficult to configure the software to email or otherwise alert administrators to backup failures.
Importing the Backup Exec management pack creates a new folder in the SCOM console: Symantec Backup Exec. In larger SCOM environments (to minimize "config churn") consider an override to reduce the frequency of these two discoveries to just once a day. The Backup Agent State view has handy columns that list the version and build number of every agent, making it easier for the distributed enterprise to keep Backup Exec agent builds in sync. Figure B shows the Backup Exec server state view on the left that makes it easy to spot which backup servers are in trouble. Lync facilitates collaboration by offering you the opportunity to create and participate in web, audio and video conferences whereever you are. While a community-converted and manually modified version of the old management pack could run poorly in SCOM 2007, most organizations have had to forego integration of Backup Exec into their SCOM 2007 monitoring infrastructure until now.
However once you scale out with some or many other Backup Exec servers to monitor, the enterprise backup picture can get progressively more difficult to manage. If you have deployed SCOM, and you are primarily needing a simple up-down check on your Backup Exec jobs and central collection of alerts relating to backup, the new Backup Exec management pack fills this key role very well and at a great price-free!
Context-sensitive tasks appear in the Alert view to restart Backup Exec services on server and agent computers. His tours of duty included Chief of Network Operations for NATO's southern region and network administrator aboard the aircraft carrier USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70).
